2WD vs 4WD
Uncle worked in the oil field. He had a simple explanation about 2WD vs 4WD.
Drive with 2WD until you get stuck. Switch to 4WD and get your ***
back out of there. 4WD just lets you get stuck farther from the road.

The best comment Ive heard about auto versus manual hubs is that manuals give you a minute to ponder what you're about to do

2005 Toyota tundra commercial version 4x4. standard cab, 8 foot bed, roll down windows, manual door locks, rubber mat floor and bench buckets. It came with air and cd player, which I now enjoy. All for $17,000 back in 2005. Will never again afford buy a new pick up, likely never any new vehicle again.
Would have preferred to keep the smaller 4 cylinder version, but totaled it.
And yes I can't jump into bed anymore, which is why the box spring and mattress is on the floor. Much easier to fall into bed.
Years ago had to drive a dump truck occasionally. They started me on a D series Mack, and it didn't have the fancy new air assist steering.

Yep, that's the way it's done.
I've always heard that the difference between 2 wheel drive and 4 wheel drive is you can get stuck twice as bad with 4 wheel drive.

Or a 4 speed on the floor, the extra gear being "granny". Posi rear ends, hubs that needed turniñg by hand. Those were trucks. Nowdays, half the 5 year old trucks on the road don't have a scratch or mark in the bed. They have a cover over it. My first new truck cost me $6000.00, and it was 10 times the truck compared to the junk they are putting on the roads now. The prices started going up when trucks became "cool". Before that happened, you could buy one for less than the price of a new car.
As for making 2WD trucks, there are plenty of good reasons. I once owned a 1974 GMC 2500 (that's a 3/4 ton) in 2WD, which in the winter I did a 23 driveway plow route with. Put chains on the rear tires, and had a junk, 700 pound curb stone in a sort of cradle in the bed for weight. That truck went ANYWHERE, and pushed a lot of snow over the years. It pushed snow around that half ton trucks couldn't, like when it was several inches of slush, like trying to plow wet cement.
Half the New Hampshire farmers I've known, today or 30 years ago, have 2WD trucks as their main farm trucks. They do the job without much trouble.

Trucks for me are mean't for hauling things, no more. If I want to haul ***, and look as good as my 45 year old self can look, I take the Corvette.

You can still buy basic trucks, they are called "work trucks" and you have to go to the "fleet sales" guy and persuade him to sell you one as a "civilian". There is much less money in a fleet truck so the stealerships are reluctant to sell them to the average Joe.

To appeal to soccer moms, I hear they even offer factory installed feminine hygiene product dispensers and the tailgate doubles as a baby-changing station.
Just pretend this is witty.

Anyone remember when a back bumper on a new pick up was an option? Into the 60's for sure maybe the 70's also.

Purchased my F-150, 5.0 Liter, new in July, 1995. Boy has she been a good one. $16,700.
One set of front brake pads. One set of U joints. One fuel pump (rear tank, I think). One set of shocks. One set of plugs and cap and rotor. One starter relay. I recently replaced the radiator, heater core and water-pump and all hoses and timing set. One each power window guts.
Not bad for twenty-years of service.
She is ready for a paint job now. Drives and rides better than a new one.
Keep on truckin!

You can use a cable from plug that goes in the 12v port. Hook to battery and send some power back that way.

What happened to the vent windows? Had them on my 87 Toyota truck. They were great until a bee gets scooped up by one then you are swerving all over the road. I remember a hornet landing on my junk and not thinking, I started to swat it off. I think you can figure out what happened next. Made for an interesting drive especially for the people behind me on the highway

Cloth seats and carpet to go on top of the asbestos backed rubber mat on the floor of the cab.

Well, you flatlanders might not need 4WD, but those of us that live in the mountains need it in the winter time.
I have gotten by with a 2WD Isuzu with mudgrip tires and extra weight in the bed at times, but get more than an inch or two of snow and it's time to break the old '88 F150 with 4WD. The snow plow on the front comes in handy too.

My personal truck is 4 door short bed all the bells and whistles. Pulls the boat and takes me to the campground every weekend. Quiet inside, rides like a Buick.
My every day driver is super duty plain Jane cab and a half, spray the interior floor out with a water hose. The problem is I have to turn the headlights off and on manually. Sometimes I drive half a block before I realize their not on, I forever forget to turn them off.

It's all about compromises. If all things are equal between two trucks except a 4WD system. In the 2WD you give up 2 things ground clearance (includes angle of approach) and traction. You gain higher payload, higher tow rating, lower buying cost, lower repair and maintenance cost , lower insurance cost, better fuel economy, better ride, lower step in height, lower load height, and lower center of gravity. Sometimes 2WD is the better tool depending on the job and resources.
|
All those reasons is why I have my 2001 F250 Extended cab long bed PowerStroke for my daily driver and travel trailer towin' rig.
Heck, it gets better mileage daily driving than the '98 Toyota 4Runner ! Which is my 4WD if I need it.

My first pickup was a 1929 Ford. Wish I still had it. Spark on the left, gas in the right. 3 on the floor. A crank under the seat when the battery was low. $50 bucks well spent. The new ones now take all the fun out of driving in the hills.

I admit to being a wusss. I owned Fords and pick-ups forever as I am really old.
I like my Mustang convertable---I miss my truck----my friends miss my truck.
I waver about getting another---it seems really stupid, at my age.
Wait a minute---when have I ever not been stupid or not done stupid things ? They worked out alright and was legal.
I want more cup holders---I like cup holders--I want leather--I want a power tailgate--I want a Tommylift
Who the hell cares about needs---I WANT !
Spoken like a true wusss.
Blessings

They are obviously trying to gradually take our trucks away from us! They can have mine when they pry "my cold dead fingers" from the steering wheel!

My pickups had to work for a living. After a few years they looked like some of my work guns. I bought a 12 year old truck to use just around the house. Mounted a snowplow, hydraulic boom hoist in the box, cross bed tool box filled with axes, wrenches tire chains and other assorted work tools, installed a gun rack that has a permanent occupant, beefed up the suspension, put numerous dents and dings in the old beater. The truck has more testosterone than a barracks full of marines. I left it to my children to name the truck. Totally expecting them to take in account it manliness, I assumed they would name it something like, Mountain Thunder, or Rock Eater, or Get the Hell out of my Way, or some thing similar. They named it.

Even living in Florida I won't buy a truck without 4WD. Do I need it often? No. But there have been several times that I did, and it's like a gun and homeowner's insurance, when you really need it, there is no substitute.
It costs a little more to buy it, and a little more to operate it, but you have it when you need it, and you get more for it when you sell it.

A power tailgate? Man that would be so cool.
I wish my Kia Soul, with the mood lights had one of those.

cajunlawyer: Calm down take a breath, imho i think its a useful feature,
if a person comes out of a store with a lot of stuff in their hands.
An they can't grab the tailgate latch and pull it down.
they can use this new feature to open the tailgate.

My favorite Ford was the original body Bronco 1967,Sport model with 289 engine.I wish I had kept it.Turn on a dime and power galore.
Of course I miss the old Chevy I had as a dating teenager with the bench seat.It was great in the old Drive In theaters!

Maybe the pick-up truck has evolved into the new status symbol for liberated women. For men, an aluminum truck is now the sign to the world that you are sensitive and caring and want all women to know that you feel their pain! Real men ride motorcycles (and maybe Subarus!)

Been there! Heard that!
I have had the big diesel guys say 'what if you have to pull 10 horses over Independence Pass?'
Answer- I have never had the need to do that.
But you might!
Like C W McCall hauled chickens over Wolf Creek Pass.
I have never done that either.

I have an old Corvette, but drive a F-150. The first trip to Lowes and you will regret that statement!

I met a guy at a local Chevy dealer a couple weeks ago. I was getting the oil changed there since I don't trust the local oil o ramas. He had a thing in his hand like a cell fone and it told him tire pressure in each tire. (He was in there getting that feature fixed for the third time since it always reported zero lbs. pressure.) I kinda insulted him when I suggested his truck must have cost $38K. He told me it was close to 50. My little Chevy '08 PU cost $17K new. I got an auto trans for the first time since I got leg probs now.
Don't they rivet them aluminum Fords together. I think I'd wait and see if the things hold together and the paint sticks on them. Didn't they remove 600 lbs using aluminum. So I guess in the winter you gotta throw your MIL near the gate. Maybe the auto gate feature is built for her.

With talk like that, I think it's safe to say Bloomberg is behind this nonsense. What's next? Anyone caught with their man card will be forced into sensitivity training. The first item that will get drilled into your head is to appreciate... powered tailgates. It's all down hill from there.

I had an '83 Landcruiser (FJ 45). My ex-wife asked about the air conditioner and I said it's the little tab by your foot=just don't drop any thing out. She said "What kind of SUV is this?" I answered "a "jeep"!".

The first old car (pre WW II) I ever rode in was a '29 Model A pick up. It was parked at a service station near my junior high school and the owner gave me a ride one evening. October 29, 1967. Loved old cars and trucks ever since.
I have a hand crank for my '49 8N tractor. Comes in handy if the battery goes dead.

My truck is a 2008 F150
V6 (no eco boost)
Vinyl floor
Roll down windows
Only luxury I wished it did have: cruise control
My wife's truck: 2014 Tundra 4X4 Crewmax
Sweet truck with all the bells and whistles
Today, she had to take it out during some heavy snow
Her-"What do I do to get it into four wheel drive "?
Me-"Turn the dial from 2H to 4H"
Her-"Thats all"??
Me- "that's it"
Her-"no locking hubs or gear shifting"?
Me-"Nope, just turn the dial"
Technology is cool

Because they are great trucks. But you know that.
My son had a 2000 Tacoma 2WD with a standard transmission. He got a lot of service out of it, but it had the frame rot problem that was common up here in the northeast. Toyota bought it back from him for essentially what he paid for it. He went out and bought a 2005 with 4WD, automatic transmission, crew cab. Much nice truck, but he still misses the older one.
My first 4WD was an Isuzu Trooper with manual hubs. I hated them. My Tundra has auto locking hubs. Much nice as the only time I use 4WD is in the snow. Unlike many idiots I don't take the 4WD feature to be an invitation to drive like a moron.

2000 4wd Tundra.
Snow last year. All sorts of trucks "I don't need 4wd" were left parked at the bottom of the hill while I gave em rides home in the evening and back to their trucks in the morning. So I guess they were right... .
