This is why new pick em ups cost $50K now. You can't buy one with a radio, heater and three on the tree anymore.

Reminds me of the old AC/DC song "Highway to Hell". A truck isn't a truck anymore, they are big cars with out a trunk lid. All this fancy new stuff is just something else to break and cost you a fortune at the dealer. It aggravates me when I have to replace the battery on my "old" yote. Takes me at least 30 min to reset the clock and stations on the radio. Can't imagine the ritual to reset everything on one of these rolling radio shacks. My $.02 Larry

YUGO was planning on making a basic pickup.
But then we bombed the factory.
It probably won't happen now!

I still don't understand why they make trucks that aren't 4WD, but to each their own....I guess.

And I agree about the costs of new trucks these days. Around me even used trucks with 100k miles are still $20k+.

Yeah, it's a slippery slope alright...I could see it coming when they offered tinted glass and "power windows" in my 1980 F-150-I passed on all of those geegaws, but went for the heavy duty suspension. She's still heavy duty, and retains the "original" crank windows, along with the original Crank that drives it.

The crew cab F150 is now the family vehicle. My cousin sells more of these to women then to the men looking for a work truck.Ford is not going to discourage women from buying these trucks, and will add feature that they can use for everyday family life.Maybe someday Ford will bring back the full size Bronco so that the men can have another vehicle just for the selfs again.

Have a friend who gets a new truck every few years. His last was a GMC Diesel Heavy Duty. Has all the cool stuff, GPS, auto back-up cam, and heated seats. Heated seats have been around for awhile but his can also be set to 'cooled seats' for Summer.

Jealousy is an ugly thing.

The pick ups of yore have gone the way of the doo doo bird.
They are all glammed up now with sunroofs and symphonic stereos.

What the heck ever happened to the ol' REO Speedwagons?

My "new" pickup is a very well kept Toyota 4WD. Everything I need, nothing I don't, like a Model 19. It's 28 years old.

Fits in the garage, too.

Trying a Toyota after last two F-150s transmission problems. Last straw was $900.00 quote to replace actuator that lets outside air in vents that failed. Part costs $35.00. Not to mention new F-ones are made from Caj's empty beer cans!

I retrofitted the late style power folding mirrors onto my '02 F250. When you have had enough of folks bashing your mirrors in around parking lots and you realize how nice it is.

Auto gate wouldn't keep me from buying one. Can even think of a few situations where it may be been a convenient feature to have. Price tag on the other hand....well my powerstroke still lookin' pretty good.

Can't get away from all of the fancy doodads in the cab.One thing I didn't have a problem with was the built in step ladder in the rear.Since Ford made the bed deeper a person couldn't reach anything from the ground unless they were over six feet tall with arms like an orangutan.

Real men use 2WD everywhere. Don't need no stinking 4wd to get around. And none of this auto tranny garbage. Of course, you do have to know how to drive. Observation of ditches in winter as I drive by in my 2wd manual shift shortbox indicates that 4wd can get you deeper into the ditch, but won't make up much for driving too fast. I've been driving this '97 F150 since 98. If the snow looks too deep or the road looks too slippery, I sleep in.

I really love using the cooled seat function in my wife's Grand Cherokee Summit. Especially when she's driving and I've just had a big bowl of chili and a couple pints of Guinness...

Well, the older I get the more I have need to be pampered.
The tail gate thing sounds pretty neat.
I can't jump into the bed of a truck anymore----Hell, I can't even jump into bed.
Speaking of jumping----I don't.
Blessings

Ford pickups are now made out of that newfangled aluminum too, rather than genuine steel.

To me if you have a single cab pickup, you don't even need power windows or power doors. I looked inside a new pick up and decided it wasn't for me, not to mention unless I pick the right numbers on the lottery ticket I couldn't afford it anyways. I must be getting old before I get old by my 41 year old Ford pick up does more than I need it to and it looks good doing it even with the few dings and dents.

Here it was last summer when I took it camping and it made a makeshift campsite.

Real men drive trucks with a carb, and a screwdriver to hold the choke open. No A/C, PB, PW, PS or any of that other power junk. Nylon tires and a bumper jack.
No AAA card either.

I'm a wuss.

I like a good work truck along with the rest of ya's but frankly I've welcomed some of the more modest comfort changes. Thank god the days of having your kidneys beat to hell like you drove around an old buckboard all day are long gone! I do agree though that they have gone to rediculous measures just to cater to the soccer mom market.

When it came time to replace our '87 4wd Toyota truck we had a heck of a time trying to find a newer truck without bunches of new fangled doodads.
Finally found a 2008 Tacoma 4wd, 4cyl base model with low mileage. No power windows or door locks and a 5 speed manual transmission.
I gotta admit that I like the idea of not having to stop and lock the hubs but I do miss not having a transfer case shifter and just turning a little dial on the dash.

I have owned both 2WD and 4WD trucks. Think of 2WD vs. 4WD like you would picking out a CCW.

It's all about compromises. If all things are equal between two trucks except a 4WD system. In the 2WD you give up 2 things ground clearance (includes angle of approach) and traction. You gain higher payload, higher tow rating, lower buying cost, lower repair and maintenance cost , lower insurance cost, better fuel economy, better ride, lower step in height, lower load height, and lower center of gravity. Sometimes 2WD is the better tool depending on the job and resources.

I think this all started when they took the dimmer switch off the floor and stuck it on the steering column. Once started, there was just no goin' back!

I own a small construction company and have driven full size pickups for 25 years. Last April I was driving a lot and spending $800/month on gasoline so I sold my 10 year old truck and bought a Toyota Rav4 SUV. I was cussing every time I had to haul some plywood or lumber and tie it to the roof, but eventually I got used to it, and I bought small 4x8 trailer if I need to haul much. Now I love driving a smaller, quieter, and more nimble vehicle that saves me 400 bucks a month on fuel, and it's easy to fit in a parking place. The problem is, I don't put that gas money I saved in the bank, I spend it on guns.

A little trick to preclude having to reset the clock, preset the radio stations, etc.:

Using a small 12V gel cell, clip wires to the positive and negative cables ends. This way, when you remove the cables from the battery terminals, the car's systems are still powered.

It all started when they took the starter pedal out of the floorboard & put it on the steering column.

It all started when they put those dang electric starter motors in. Nothing wrong with using the hand crank as long as you remember to tuck your thumb in.

Default I guess there's not as much need......

I guess there's not as much need for a 'working' truck these days and the more fancy stuff they sell you the more money they make.

Thinking back. Bench seat with windows wide open and vents windows pushed completely backward tearing down the dirt road by fields on a blistering summer day with the AM radio blaring. That is living.

One of the first vehicles I drove (much older than me) had a crank out windshield. The bottom opened abou 3 inches. That was the defroster.

There are still work trucks, but people want comfort too. The last ambulances I worked in had everything but power seats. Which I don't think trucks really need.

I was in my bosses brand new GM pickup with, well, everything. Crew cab with power seats, heated power seats. Power everything else. Really nice, but way more truck than I'd ever need, but it would be nice to own.

I'm more than happy with my 2006 Toyota Tundra Access cab, with V8, automatic transmission, power door locks and windows, and 4WD. It has everything I need and nothing I don't.
