The Greatest Car Chase,,,,,
The Greatest Car Chase is on right now, TCM is showing Bullit!
Ford Mustang vs. Dodge Charger and the Model 97 Winchester !
Can never miss that scene!
One of my most favorite Steve McQueen pics of all time!

Bullit does have the best car chase.
Lots of chases filmed after it seem to sort of 'copy' it.

Don't forget "The French Connection" - same director as Bullitt and he set out to best it. Many consider this one the best car chase in history.

I'm only missing a couple of things for my "Bullitt" outfit: - 2.5" Colt Diamondback
- Brown herringbone sport coat
- Blue cashmere turtleneck
- 1968 Mustang GT
- Tod's Italian driving boots *
- Safariland Model 19 shoulder holster
I'm going further in the hole.

Here in NC TCM is showing Ben-Hur. Haven't seen it in years, so I can miss Bullitt this once.

I very much like the car chase in Bullitt. However, I like the car chase in French Connection better. And of course... the car chase in Ben Hur ... no one's ever likely to beat that! JMHO. Sincerely. brucev.

Bullitt was good. To Live and Die in L.A. was also good. I like the sound effects of the Chevy Impala's Quadrajet secondaries opening during the chase.
Not to many movies have good chase scenes in them any more...

Actually Peter Yates directed "Bullitt" and William Friedkin directed "The French Connection". John Frankenheimer did an outstanding job with "Ronin" also. I equally like the opening chase in "The Transporter" (the first film) directed by Louis Leterrier and Corey Yuen.
They all have really great chases, can't say I prefer one over the other.

Great flick.
The chase with the Mustang and the Mopar is legendary, and the M97 is cool.
But don't forget Jacqueline Bissett.

When a teenager I thought I saw the coolest car chase movie.
"DIRTY MARY AND CRAZY LARRY" with Peter Fonda & Susan George.
Always wanted to see it again.
I found it on Netflix so I watched it.
It was so bad I took my Dremel tool and drilled my eyes out of the sockets.
In hindsight I could have turned it off.

I do have a pair of dark brown desert boots.

The shoulder rig he wore was very cool with the gun upside down. You need to add that to the list.

The early 70s cop movie "The Seven Ups" also had a great car chase. The bad guy driver was Bill hickman (I think)who was the stunt driver/coach from Bullitt who drove the Charger. He was also a friend of James Dean and was behind him in another car when James Dean died. The Seven Ups did not try to compete with Bullitt. You can tell. They didnt use glamorous cars and it ended differently. And the main bad dude carried a 3 1/2" S&W Model 27. Coolllll!!

That Charger must have had at least eight hubcaps - I saw at least 4 fly off, but then it still had three...
I can't remember...was Bullit's Mustang supposed to be a manual tranny? Sure sounded like there was some serious heel and toe shifting going on, and I never saw the bad guy (the Charger) with less than two hands on the wheel.

+1 ... One of my favorite films, and one of the best NYC flicks ever.
Bill Hickman was in the Big Three (Bullitt, French Connection, Seven Ups) as a driver, actor, and coordinator. As impressive as the chase in Bullitt is, watching Hickman bombing through NYC in his Grand Ville chased by Roy Scheider in his Ventura is something to behold, especially as I know the area so well.
Another great car chase is in Ronin, although you need to appreciate Euro styling rather than American Muscle.
And that was Richard Lynch with the Model 27!

"C'etait un rendezvous" by Claude Lelouch isn't a car chase per se, as there's only one car involved in the action, but it is one of the best driving scenes ever committed to film.
The thing about "Bullit" that stayed with me all these years was the SOUND of the cars....

Pretty decent car chase in "The 7-Ups", also starring Roy Scheider, I believe.

They got plenty of air!
The "Seven-Ups" scene that is most reminiscent of "Bullitt" (where Hickman and McQueen are going downhill and keep passing the green VW and white Lemans) comes when Scheider chases Hickman across 96th Street in NYC, then hangs a right on Riverside Drive and goes for the GW Bridge.

Let me be sure I got this right-
It was filmed after Bullitt and it looks a lot like Bullitt?
Interesting!

In Bullitt, several of the chase scenes were used more than once or from a different angle but portraying some time has gone by.
To understand this, I always tell people to watch for the Green
VW Beetle. It's passed more than once.

I always wondered where that chase took place outside the city...
I finally looked it up yesterday!!!
It took place is various places in and around the bay area over a two week period.
No wonder I could never locate that piece of road!!!!

Philip D'antoni produced "Bullitt", "The French Connection", and "The Seven-Ups", and had Bill Hickman as a primary driver and coordinator. All three chase scenes bear striking similarities as a result.

Here is a real life chase, or was is real??? In the video below, the car being chased seems to vanish into thin air after passing through a fence without any damage to said fence.

No talk of movie car chases would be complete without mentioning The Road Warrior. The last half hour or so of the movie is basically one long car chase with some of the baddest stuntman ever to appear on camera!

I always wondered about the green bug. It kind of stands out and is rather obvious. I thought they should have picked a different car to make it less obvious they were reshooting several times.

Why a Diamond Back?.....I believe he carried a Detective Special or Cobra (Old style / Gen 1 if you prefer). His revolver didn't have adjustable sights.

Not that excited about chase scenes, but the one in Bullitt was parodied at least twice, I think in Clint Eastwood movies. The first had a chase scene with a garbage truck, and the second had a city-street chase with a small radio-controlled car a foot or so long that was understood to have explosives included.
Obviously unforgettable.

The 7 Ups used the sound-track to Bullitt. Both cars were automatic but you could here the Bullitt Mustang as Steve is double-clutching the tranny. You could also see the automatic gear shift on the columns in 7 Ups.
As yes, the hit-man in Bullitt was GOOOOOOOOOOOOD: 97 and ice pick.
My vote is for Real. Have to watch French Connection again.

The car chase seen in "to live and die in L.A." is also great IMHO. Also liked the chase in "The Blues Brothers". But nothing beats McQueen's Mustang.

I read somewhere that they had to supe-up that Mustang,so it could keep up with the factory stock 440 69' charger.

I have to say that the "Bullitt" case was one of the best..........
but I do like Steve's movies............
By the way did any of you notice that the charger lost 6 (six) hub caps in that chase ?? !!
Being born in SF, it did bring back memories of some of or HS
"Try this" things to do............
SF police were always after us..............
Then I moved to Nevada and wide open spaces.........!!
Drag strips up the kazoo !!
