70 years ago today...Iwo was invaded.
Thanks to all the Marines and Navy men that sacrificed themselves for that miserable little island that became such a lifesaver as an emergency strip for B-29s and as an air strip for P-51s to protect the bombers. I was fortunate to have a shop teacher and friend in high school that participated and earned the Purple Heart and Silver Star.

Don't forget the Army was there also!
Here's a 1943, 1911 A-1 bought from a local vet who received a battlefield commission on Iwo and brought it home with him. Has blood pits about 3" back from the muzzle.

Had a great friend....
I had a friend that was on Iwo Jima. He was in the Navy medical corps and got a snapshot of the flag.

To bad our school children won't know about it. They are taught other things in history class these days.

A horrible battle in hideous terrain, fighting an enemy force that was incredibly well dug in. The stories of sacrifice and valor could fill volumes.

...the heroism of theaters of operation like Iwo is the stuff our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren should be exposed to.
