Default Snow in the South

Got about an inch or two and still falling here in Northwest Alabama. EVERYBODY buys milk and bread; I've got Single Barrel Jack Daniel's, and taco soup, so I'm plenty happy. Let it snow; love to watch it fall.

Our first real storm this winter was 32". Its been downhill ever since.
But we do have "machines" up here to deal with it.
I worked in MD for a while and everyone panicked if the weather guessers even mentioned the word "snow", so I understand and feel your pain.

Judging by all the gas trucks I see from down south sliding off the roads around here, I'm guessing you guys are in for a bad time.....

Be safe!

I'm just south of Bartow county.

On the way home I stopped by and picked up a bottle of 12 year old Elijah Craig and another bottle of Eagle Rare 10 year old bourbon.

Be Prepared!

Do you remember the saying, "It's snowing down south"?

That was when a ladies slip was longer than her skirt.

Ya, were scheduled to get snow, again, tonight somewhere between 2 - 8 inches. Ran out a lunch time and could not help but notice that the parking lot of the ABC store was fuller than the grocery store, ya gotta get your priorities right.

I took this picture this morning. We got between 3 and 4 inches and more snow is forecast later in the week. I live about 10 miles outside of Mt. Vernon, Texas in the north east part of the state. This is very unusual weather for late February. Last week we had temps in the upper 60s.

We got 2" so far... I'm about 8 miles east of Cleveland. TN and it's still coming down.
We only had a small amount of rain/sleet before it started snowing.. maybe we'll only have a little ice under it?
Guess the kids will play on the Cherohala Skyway tomorrow...
wish I was young again!

We've seen several rounds of snow and ice the past couple of weeks in the Arkansas Ozarks. Some of the Yankee folks who retire down here often complain that southerners can't drive in this stuff, but the thing to remember is we don't get it often enough to be experianced, we have ZERO snow removal equipment, and more often than not it's more ICE than snow.

I don't understand why yankees that move down here permanently are so critical about our lack of ability to handle snowy weather. If they dislike our way of life so much, why do they stay here?
I believe in NC and SC, it is a state law that when the weatherman on TV starts mentioning snow in the forecast, you must dash out to the grocery store and stock up on milk, bread, peanut butter, and jelly. Judging by the cars in the parking lots, everybody drove 2 vehicles to get the necessities. It is winter down South-get used to the fact that we go crazy at the sign of the few flakes we get. It's how we are raised.

The local weather guy here, showed a map of the current jet stream. The southern edge of the jet stream goes all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. Since it's so far south, the moisture that runs along its edges has caused all the unusual snow fall in the south.

Up here in Michigan, the snowfall has been considerably less than last year's record, but we've had the coldest weather in many years.

On a more serious note, it just proves that the driver of the weather in the U.S. is the jet stream and not cow flatulence.

I've already got 3in on the deck. Calling for two more hours of "heavy snow" and the three more hours of snow. Could be an interesting drive to work in the morning here in Chattanooga. I think I'll leave early before all the guys who don't ever need 4wd start calling for a lift.

I'm just a few miles south of Chattanooga in Ringgold, GA. I'm looking at about three inches right now and it's still coming down.

Global warming, global cooling. It's cyclic.

What does the weatherman know anyway. Only been keeping records since the 1870's.

This global warming thing has been yelled about for 15,000 years rumor started by wooly mammoth weathermen.

Getting interesting out there, in NE GA, right now. A couple inches of snow and it warmed and is now raining on top of said snow. Sure glad this old man is retired. No need to go anywhere in the morning.

It stopped snowing for a minute here...

For Chattanooga, this is a fair amount of snow in three hours. And it's supposed to snow for another four hours.

See that rooftop in the bottom left? Hoping I don't land in his yard on the way down.

Default Was it in '72......

Charleston had about 6" of snow and I was trying to deliver papers in my car and came across a police cruiser skewed across a residential street and abandoned. I had to back up and go around the block to pick up where I left off. I was scratching my head and couldn't imagine what kind of panic attack the officer had going down the street in 6" of snow at 25 mph.

It's in the 50s and raining here in the Panhandle, and we've got a tornado watch until midnight. Last week, we were in the Blue Ridge Mountains playing in the snow, now, they're up there with their milk sammiches.

We got enough to build snowmen hear south of Memphis, so every neighborhood is lined with them. Schools are closed but the roads are fine, means I got a bunch of folks calling in today though.

We kept going in and out of the snow/rain line yesterday. Have <2 inches on the ground. Grand kids love it. Had a lot of pine limbs pop last night with the ice and snow load.
Went to the Townsend Tn. Sunday and was supposed to come back yesterday but woke up Tue with 4" of snow on the hill. After talking to my daughter and being told about the B'ham forecast, it was OK, what is our best window to get home. Packed up and skied the trucks down the road about 3:00 PM Tue. Once we made the mile and a half to the bottom of the hill, the main roads were good. Didn't see any more snow once we got past 1morethan8's neck of the woods.
One a different note, I told y'all a couple of weeks ago on the springtime thread that winter was not over, we hadn't had the snow come and cover the blooming daffodils. Spring can come now. the daffodils are sticking out through the snow. Larry

We got about three-inches of snow beginning in the afternoon on Wednesday, the 25th, but warmed and got rain that gave us two-inches of slush. Bad.

Luckily, most were prepared and there was not too much chaos. It warmed as today wore on and our driveway is now clear, as is the sidewalk. I went out at midnight and pushed the slush off the Mustang, the driveway and walk, as best I could. It was a good move, as what was left has quickly disappeared with the rising temps. Cannot say the same for those not far away, as they got five to seven inches of snow. A mere fifteen miles to the North and it looked like a different storm.

Soon it can and will quickly become too hot to enjoy shooting outside. That's when we find a shade and handload.

The South in the summer...

Thank God for the pleasant hum of an air conditioner!

Carefully scrape the top inch of fresh snow and put it in a cocktail glas. Gently pour in some nice single malt (or cask bourbon if you wish) and you got a grown up sno-ball
Enjoy responsibly

lived in SC for 6 years before moving back to WI last fall; actually had a couple snowfalls hit (one was quite deep, 6-8") while we were there. Light snow may be somewhat common in the upstate there, but where we lived (Lake Murray/Columbia area) it was not. So while we learned to accept the lack of road crews/plows/etc as a reason for poor road conditions and lack of driver education for locals in snow when it happened, never quite understood how so many of the transplants somehow checked their winter driving skills at the border when they relocated south lol.

Enjoyed watching kids who may have been in snow for the first time, but found it somewhat ironic to have snow on our little palm tree when it would come down lol

This is my son's place about 20 miles East of Huntsville Alabama. They said they had about 7 inches on the ground. We haven't had much over 3 inches total this season in NE Kansas.

His house is about 150 yards up on the side of a mountain.
