Why is the manager of a baseball team called a manager, and not a coach? I know there are coaches, but in other sports there are head coaches and other coaches; why not call the manager the head coach?

And what is up with old guys with pot bellies wearing the same uniform as the players? Sometimes with cleats, yet!

I believe the uniform dates to the days of player managers, Pete Rose most recently. Guys like Connie Mack literally managed his team, he was the GM and field manager.
