Default Mom shoots her TV

An Illinois mom was frustrated that her kids were spending too much time watching music videos on TV so she walks into the room while the kids are watching and puts several rounds into the 50” HDTV.

What kind of parenting is this, don’t people reason with their kids anymore? So the woman was frustrated but what kind of example does this set, mad at something just shoot it? This kind of stuff gets my goat!

Terrible! Awful!! Thoughtless mom.

She could have used a brick and not taken the chance of hurting her or her children's hearing. Not to mention using up precious ammo.

This is the problem. Adults should not reason with kids. I am the parent, you are the child, you will mind. Throw a temper tantrum about it, and we can deal with that also.

My boys are hellions for my wife because she will not be firm with them, and she is amazed that I rarely have to raise my voice. I very rarely have to spank them because they know I will. Thank the Lord that we have a blessed marriage and are both there for the kids, I have been a single parent in the past, and it is no fun, but you must make young-uns understand their place.

First teach respect, then teach flexibility, reasoning can come later, depending on the development level of the child.

Someone who would shoot their TV in their home is a poster child for keeping guns out of the hands of incompetents.

I am in no way a wonderful parent, but my parents (1924/1934) raised me with values that are uncommon now. I feel it is my duty to pass those values along. YMMV

Sad story, sounds like she could use some professional help. For my part I think a good old Louisville Slugger would have had more effect without the criminal charges.

Back in the day my mom used 3 or 4 coffee cups, the good part is that we soon after got our first color TV.

Mom only told us once, no TV until 5 PM during the week. That is what time the Mickey Mouse show started.

Saturday morning was OK for a couple hours.

None of us messed around or broke Ma's rules or her regulations.

Elvis once shot a TV. Not his TV.
I think it belonged to a hotel.

have the children been taken away and put in safe custody?
has the "mother" been charged with unlawful use of a firearm; child endangerment; given a psychological evaluation and placed in the local jail pending her court date??

Old school Mom's were more firm.

My Mom loved us to pieces, but there were lines to not cross. He Dad had 10 kids, when he gave a job in the morning for a kid it had better be done or they got the belt at lunch. He had an 800 acre farm, lots of labor. Mom did learn that from her Dad.

If we messed up we had to go get a peach tree limb, not too small or she'd go get one, huge.

My siblings had me do the master of ceremony at our parents 50th anniversary. We rented the community center. Mom was related to half the county and knew the rest. Lots of folks showed up.

I was reliving our youth on their farm, I told folks Mom was a better magician than the TV ones. Yep, she could levitate us kids.

Her arm and the peach tree limb moved fast, a blur if you will. I said we could keep both feet in the air at the same time.

It brought lots of laughs. Mom's face was a little red when I went back to the table. She said, go get me a peach tree limb.

A great many women are not able to discipline children, especially pre-adolescent and adolescent boys. It does not take a community to raise a child but, often does take two parents. There is no way my mother could have controlled us kids without my father in there in the home.

Those that think it is a good idea for single women or men to intentionally raise children are just plain wrong. Single men and women do what they can if that is there only alternative, but to set out and plan to be a single parent is just not responsible behavior.

Unfortunately today, there are tens of millions of single mothers out there who have little or no control over their children, especially the adolescent boys. While this is not the only factor that has led to the massive increase in gang activity, it is certainly the single greatest reason for the increase in gang activity in this nation. The gangs provide the structure and discipline that is missing in those homes. Unfortunately it is not a positive structure or environment and leads to criminal behavior.

All historical efforts to replace the two parent family have ended in disaster.

It sounds to me like a frustrated mother who knows she has no control over the kids but desperately trying to do something. Unfortunately shooting the TV is extremely bizarre and more than a little crazy and certainly not an acceptable way to control the kids behavior.

It is better than shooting the kids however. LOL

If she would have thrown a rock through the TV, or stabbed it we would have never heard about it. IMO, it only made the news because a firearm was involved.

The fail is strong here...

Her kids share her DNA, she's bugnutz, so the situation is rife for such poor decisions.

Destroying your own property - odds are the kids didn't pay for the TV - instead of rubbing two brain cells together for a solution.

I might have found a way to disconnect the power line where it wouldn't be obvious. Hey... TV isn't working, let's do something else...

Using a firearm around the kids, no thought to the penetration issues and who it might affect outside the house. Unforgivable!

360 degree fail!

Is there a law about shooting your own TV on your own property provided safety precautions have been observed? Anyway she can always plead accidental discharge. People shoot their TV's all the time

There was nothing on until 5pm anyway, I can remember coming home from school and turning on the TV and watching the test pattern.

There have been some good comments in this thread. Some excellent advice. There was one thing I missed though. No one mentioned the use of the off button. The proper use of such a button can save time, explanations to authorities, putting up with the ringing in your ears and needless wear and tear on an expensive piece of electronics. Oh yeah and it's cheaper than paying for that expensive ammo.

Your right when looking on line for schedules, most of the majors started around 7 PM, but I remember the Big Brother Bob Emery show being on in the afternoon well before 5 PM.

Probably local TV, we use to toast the President of the United States with a glass of milk.

Do you remember him?

If everyone shot their TV the world would be a better place. Make sure of your backstop, of course. All local and federal laws apply.

What is with the nanny state attitude prevailing? Everyone should be free to treat their own property as they see fit. Shoot it, burn it, smash it, whatever. And what is this world coming to when you can't shoot guns in your own home. No one hit, no foul I says.

Can't tell if I am being sarcastic? Neither can I. But unless someone was actually shot, or the property of another damaged...I don't see a problem requiring either a national news item or the attention of authorities beyond a ticket for whatever misdemeanor pay a fine, pick up trash and don't do that again offense seems appropriate.

That woman is bat-spit crazy, and a menace.

Same goes for the guy here in NC awhile back who took the laptop away from his daughter, went outside with it, and shot it in the back yard.

Anybody using guns for purposes like this should, first and foremost, have ownership revoked permanently. Period.

Default Losing control not good.....and dangerous.

I'll have to say that I admired the father who was tired of the kids always fighting over the game machine, so when they got home one day, he had nailed it to a tree in the back yard. I'll bet they got THAT message.

About 30 years ago, a co-worker of mine had his ex dump their now troubled teenage son on him. She had gotten tired of his mess, dropped him off at the door and left without a word.
He left work about lunch time one day and found that the kid had skipped school and was laid up on the couch watching TV. He just walked over, unplugged the TV and cut the plug off the end of the cord. Never said a word, but made his point.

BTW: I think this woman's shooting should be ruled justifiable.

No.............
she got them back to reality.............

you know, the things that we grew up with.

Respect, have manners, to obey, not talk back to elders.....
If you got a good thing going, don't mess it up by flipping

Serves them right.
