Default TV troubles

I have a LG LED TV that's about 1 year old. Today, the picture went out, but it still had sound.

My wife is NOT happy with a flat screen radio.

There is nothing in the troubleshooting guide on this problem. I unplugged it and then replugged it. Same problem. I checked it on our bedroom connection. Same.

Ideas? Solutions?

Model number might help.

Flat panel TVs and monitors have a backlight which can burn out and while they can be replaced it is not necessarily easy although replacing an assembly is easier (and a bit more expensive) than just the bulb.

Next would be the inverter board the backlight(s) plug into.

Next would be be capacitors on the power board.

Any of these can be done if you have some basic tools and some some experience with a soldering iron if you get into capacitors.

Default Last time I talked....

Last time I talked to technical help for an new printer that started, but shut down immediately after, the first thing they told me was to try another outlet in my house. I was insulted but they made it right. Sent me a new printer and told me to trash the old one.

We had the same problem with one of Our T.V's.I called the Store and They sent a Repairman out,It turned out that it was a Circuit Board that was bad and it only took about ten minutes to fix and cost Me $100.00. Most of it was the service call.

Many aspects of modern electronics is kinda plug and play to a fair degree.
If you are brave enough, crack it open.
Look for scorch marks, and sniff check.
If it smells bad, it usually is bad.
You might also look closely at the capacitors.
They look like tiny soda cans with a shrink wrap sleeve.
These are designed to vent if things get goofy. Tell tale signs of a cap failure is a bulged and or split top.
Usually, these are fairly easy to replace, despite the new smt form.
it is fine work for steady and patient hands.
Push come to shove, most every board has a part number.
Web surfing for the numbers can often hook you up with replacements.
With deeper investigation, you might be surprised to see how off the shelf these modules are.

Usually electronic stuff has a 90 warranty for labor and a 1 year or so warranty for parts. Unfortunately labor is usually the expensive part.

Is taking it back the shop where you bought it an option? It should be cheaper to have them check it out there than to make a house call.

Hopefully you have some warranty left. When it comes to electronics I leave it to the experts. If you are liek me and bought it from a big box store to save money, yo may as well get on the phone to the mfg. and most likely will need to box it up and return to them. Had a similar problem with a 22" monitor from Samsung, sent it back and they returned all fixed up with a replacement part.

It may be the lamp has burned out and these are not difficult to replace. There usually is an access door on the back of the set for this purpose.
Replacements are not inexpensive running around $100 for the whole unit which is a plug in. It certainly isn't the main power supply or you wouldn't have any audio.

What store did you buy it from, and how did you pay for it? The reason I ask is because we purchased a flat panel TV a few years ago from the local Costco, and paid for it with the Costco AMEX card. Over 2.5 yrs. later, a crack appeared on the screen (the kids thought I would think they were responsible and were terrified). I was going to trash the sucker, when just for grins, I pulled the instruction manual and paperwork - including the original receipt. It had the standard 90 day/ 1 yr. labor/parts warranty, but because I had purchased it using the Costco AMEX, the warranty had been extended for 3 yrs. at no additional cost. I had to take the TV to a repair shop that Costco designated for their evaluation. Within a few days, I had a phone call from the local Costco manager apologizing profusely for my bad experience with their product, and invited me into the store to discuss options.

They offered us a complete refund, or store credit. We purchased a new, larger sized TV, and even got a few bucks back as the price had dropped over the past few years.

Worth a shot.

Best of luck,

Dave

Have you tried another TV to rule out your service provider? I'm on DISH and have had one or two times where something like this would happen.

Double Dave, had the same experience, in 1 year the prices had lowered so much we got a replacement TV plus a smaller TV and some other stuff.

Muley, what king of warranty? I would call the store, if this don't work I'd find a repair place, hard to do and get it checked after I check the bulb several experienced guys mention.

Muley,I won a 37"Dynex about 6 years ago.Cool, free flat screen for the bedroom.About a year later turned it on and sound only.Oh well no receipt,no idea where it was purchased,Its done.It was free who really cares.Dynex ain't the pride of the electronics fleet anyway.I found by trial and error that if I turned it off as soon as the sound came on and then immediately turning it back on the picture came back on the second power up.Not saying this will work for you but it might be worth a shot.Still using it to let the bad news of the world put me to sleep every night.

I bought it at Wal-Mart on 17 Oct 13. Price was $271, including tax.

Went out after work and got a 50" Emerson, including a 3 year warranty. I may try and see if it can be fixed.

Thanks for all of the advice.

Precisely what I was gonna suggest. These things are getting so cheaper, it usually doesn't pay to get them fixed.

My Sony Bravia developed a shadow on the top third of the screen a couple weeks ago. Found out it'd be upwards of 400 to fix, so we bought a new LG 49 inch for $500.

I think my 5 year old has the biggest TV in his room of any other 5 year old. He said he doesn't mind the shadow so he has the 42 inch.
