You MAY ship directly to an FFL . Not every FFL cares to receive from a private individual, confirm first. (Same for handguns.)

Drm50 - You may ship a long gun thru the USPS as a private party to an FFL dealer (I use Priority Mail, Insured, signature required. It offers free tracking).

Private parties must use Fed Ex or UPS, no USPS, for handguns. FFL dealers CAN use the USPS for handguns.

Most FFL dealers will accept a long gun from a non-FFL, provided you send a copy of your drivers lisc., especially if it is going to be a sales / transfer. Make sure you ship to the dealers business address, as shown on his FFL.

For what it is worth I find FedEx Ground to be the best bang for my buck. That said I had a buyer a few years ago who hated FedEx and would only use UPS. I think the cost was a little more expensive, and the employees a tad more difficult to work with, in the end he got his rifle.
