Default Arizona's monsoon season is coming...

Arizona has a very special and spectacular season that occurs in the mid-summer months. We call it the monsoon season. High humidity sweeping in from the gulf and the Pacific plus high winds generated by the summer heat generate sudden storms that seem to appear out of nowhere. Always beautiful and sometimes disastrous. Here are some pictures I've taken of approaching storms that typify that special beauty -

...and to experience these storms in motion, please see this excellent time-lapse video. It's amazing.

Hope you enjoy it.

John

I can't tell you how much I wished we live out your way. We love the openness and hiking. Climb a mountain, or as you guys would call the hills, around here all you would see is more trees. No great views like in Sedona or Monument Valley. Although I have some great waterfall from NY and the coast has some great opportunities.

Around here when you live in the mountains you go to the ocean and when you live at the ocean you go the mountains. I guess it's typical everywhere.

Back to your pictures. I am mostly a B&W guy but picture #7 just wouldn't get the justices it deserves in B&W.

We have a variation of that here next door in New Mexico, called "Virga". Our humidity runs pretty low, so sometimes when a cloud tries to produce rain, the rain continually evaporates before it can reach the ground. That process can suck a lot of heat out of a small piece of atmosphere, making life exciting for small plane pilots.

The lightning displays that go along with out monsoons are spectacular as well. Some nights we'll get in the car and head up to a high spot to watch.

Monsoon makes pretty pictures for sure and yours are real nice. With 60 plus years in AZ and as a 7th generation native, I'm tired of it. One thing to watch it from your deck and quite another to have to bury a barn full of sheep that have been killed by a lightning strike. Humidity, bugs galore. I'd just as soon pass. The rest of the year fortunately makes up for monsoon. This morning it was 42 degrees and right now it's pushing 90. 6% humidity. Crystal clear chilly nights. I ran the DR trimmer four hours straight just now and didn't even pop a sweat. THIS is my favorite season.

Monsoon season in the Grand Canyon of AZ was also pretty spectacular. The sound of the thunder bouncing off the cliff walls was earthshaking, and when there was a downpour, waterfalls could be seen cascading from cliffs thousands of feet above the canyon floor. Of course there were flash floods...that was the down side, especially if you didn't get out of the path in time.

We never used to call it the monsoon season when I lived there. It was only know as the summer gully washers. I used to live in an area that had high mountains in all directions. Some summer nights I could walk outside and see forest and brush fires on every one of those mountains started by lightning. The lightning was intense to say the least.

Monsoon pict from ABQ.

The pict doesn't do it justice - it was BRIGHT.

And here's one with my shooting "range" south of ABQ. The monsoon clouds were just getting started.

I'm on top of the back stop and my buddy's truck is about 350m +or - away.

That picture was taken at Pinnacle Peak, another landmark mountain that's located just NE of Phoenix.

All I can think of is the "Cowboy" cartoon from years ago. The cowboy is praying for rain. Lord, it ain't so much fer me---I have see in before. It is for my boy--he's 21 and thinks it is just a myth.

Another story is told about an old time gas station attendant in Gila Bend, AZ, between Nowhere and Nowhere Else. He came out to clean the windshield of some folks driving through for the first time. "Say, old timer, does it ever rain around here?" says the driver.

He replied, "Well, yes, it did rain up in them mountains over there about five years ago. But I was busy and I couldn't go."

We went to a wienie roast last night over some friends in N Phoenix. Choice of Makers Mark,Vodka, Chablis or beer to go with the wienies. We were roasting them over an open mesquite fire. Hot apple pie and ice cream for dessert. It was beautiful with all the stars and Venus in conjunction with the moon. This was one of those nights where I think we could have stayed outside till dawn.

Pinnacle Peak has a marked hiker's trail as well as a climber's trail, if you're into bouldering. I used to hunt rabbits out there as a kid. Not a soul around for miles. Now? not so much.
