Default Finally shot this lizard

Been after one of these for 15+ years. Finally got a Desert Iguana out in the Valley of Fire state park, right next to our friend's travel trailer. Looks like it lost some tail in the past.

Wonder if it's as fast as the brown ones we have here in Texas. I would love to have a mini go pro mounted on one!

I wish they had! And since you bring that wretched beast up, what is the point of the thing having an English accent? This is America not the UK. For that one reason alone I won't switch.

I lived in Valley of Fire S.P. for a while, way back in the early 1980s.
A beautiful place.

Haven't you notice, it's impossible to sell anything in this country any more unless you have an English or Australian accent. Maybe they have guys from New York over there selling their stuff. LOL

Default Lizard Rig

What is the appropriate rifle to hunt these lizards, do you carry
a 44 for back up? I'd hate to have a wounded one charge.
Just hacken on you, ha-ha!

Funny you should say that. In the spring the male Desert Spiny Lizards become very territorial. I've been walking along a trail and been charged by them. Usually at the last second they veer off to the side up a small bank and sorta give me a look that told me it was as well I was much bigger than them. Feisty.

Did you know:
The desert iguana has the highest body temperature ever recorded in an animal? (even though it is cold-blooded)

It has a black layer on the inside of the abdominal wall to absorb ultraviolet rays?

Certainly you would like a slimy green reptile with yellow eyes for an insurance agent.

On television, having someone speak in an English accent automatically makes them know a lot more than you do. I remember thinking this even back in the 60's when those 'London Air' stocking commercials were on TV where the stockings were so 'Absolyutely Syuper' you'd have to be an idiot not to buy them. That was about 50 years ago and they are still at it. Except now they have to throw a few people speaking Aussie into the mix.

PS: How about Flo? She's cute and she speaks American.

PPS: I saw one of those things the other day that says you should boycott some company because they are gun hating commies (which is fine with me) but they were trying to make out Stephanie Courtney, who plays 'Flo', to be a bad person because she advertised for them.??? (not fine with me) However, I've been advised to stay far away from their stinking insurance regardless of their stance on firearms possession.

I think Geico commercial are some of the best television around.

I'm not switching inurance, but I like the commercials.

Back to the real lizard.

The only lizards we have around here are skinks. When my mother first moved to Hanover she apparently had never seen one before. She called the game warden and asked it they would bite. She said he laughed and said, "Lady, they can't bite you...they don't have any teeth."

I spent many an hour trying to catch one when I was a kid. Never came close. Those things can scoot.

Moderators: Feel free to delete if this is too "Adult".

While in junior college, we would pay for books by collecting snakes. The non-poisonous would go to pet stores and the "hot" (venomous) went to a wholesaler==Hermosa Reptile in Hermosa Beach. The guy who taught me was a guy named Steve. Steve had lost a leg while snake hunting at a fairly young age. It wasn't snakebite but a boulder crushed his foot and calf, so they amputated. Didn't slow him down any==he got more "action" than most guys with both legs. Last I heard he was a photographer for National Geographic. A friend of mine ran into him in Costa Rica while doing her grad work.

Anyway, Steve had a date over and another couple. He lived in the Belmont Shore area of Long Beach, a college and young adult community. Steve and his girlfriend "retired" for the evening and the other couple were getting acquainted on the couch. In the middle of the festivities, a moth landed on the ceiling. A foot long Tokay Gecko ran up the wall, across the ceiling and back down the wall, behind the couch the couple were reclining on. Tokays will bite and are a gray and pink color. I presume some alcohol was involved, as well some herbs. Anyway, the young lady was hysterical and it took them a while to figure out what triggered it all.

Setting aside Steve for the moment, as he probably still has an English accent, I can tell you I'd rather hear the Geico lizard or a couple of other British - voiced commercials than I'd want to hear accents from some of the US NE states.

There's one vacuum cleaner commercial that I'd better not describe, but it turns me off so much that I change channels until it's over.

The funny thing is, I think the guy doing Outback Steakhouse ads now may be an American trying to sound like an Aussie. I wish they'd kept Will Snow for that job. (Disclaimer: I do not know for sure where the present Outback guy is from.)

BTW, I've seen pics of iguana bites on the Net, and some look pretty bad. These were the usual big green neotropical iguanas. But monitor lizard bites are worse. The bigger monitors would have a horrible bite, and they often get infected, too.

We had a bunch of iguanas in one pet store I worked at. Their tails left some pretty nasty scratches on our arms as they whipped them around==really stung like a grass cut or something from a rose thorn.

I've had alligator lizards give a good bite (drew blood pretty well) and even one from a banded gecko that got some blood.

Well, I really did kill one once. A skink, about 4 inches long and I have a witness, shot his head off at 200 yards with a 6mm rifle. Won a six pack of beer on the bet that I could shoot his head off. That was a long time ago and the best shooting rifle I ever owned. I did enjoy the beer afterwards.

That joker does one of the worst attempts at an Australian accents I've heard in years. Really poor.

Among the monitor lizards the Komodo dragon is notorious for its bite causing horrible infections. It was believed for a long time that they would bite their prey then wait for the infection to take it down; but a documentary I saw a while back claimed it had been discovered that they also secrete venom. That's a damn scary thought--those animals are big, and a double whammy of venom and nasty infection doesn't sound promising for avoiding being a menu item.
