Default Is it almost impossible to keep up with an older house/yard, and have a full time...

... job, or what?
What gets me the most is the room that no one ever goes into gets dirty a month after it is cleaned.
Oh, good luck getting anyone to actually show up to do some work, even after they gave you the price and told you they would be there on such and such day.

The joy's of homeownership.
If it's not on fire, I'll ignore it until the time is right.

The simple thing to do is--like loads of laundry, do whatever when it needs doing and it doesnt pile up on you. Thats the way I do it and im never slugging away for aday cleaning or whatever? More like--an hour or so at the most.

My house is a 66-year-old ranch. Maintaining it is a hobby of mine and my wife and I keep it tip-top and we've added many conveniences that only a mechanically inclined handyman can do.

As the Ringo Kid said, you must stay on top of things and not let work accumulate. The deeper the hole gets, the less inclined you are to fill it.

Take a break and watch Tom Hanks in The Money Pit. Everything will seem better.

If you like doing big jobs, the easiest way to find them is to ignore little jobs until they grow to a size that suits you.

I have a 25 acre horse facility with barn, arena and tool-shed. The house is 160 yrs old and it took 10 yrs to restore (not renovate) it. I retired from the 900mph-with-your-hair-on-fire employment (which I had done for almost 38 yrs) and found something I could do from home. It was a decision driven by the need to be able to keep this place looking and functioning good. The good news is that after flying-a-desk for 38 yrs, I love being outside and working with my hands.

Default When I had to retire.....

When I had to retire on disability taking care of the house got to be a very difficult chore. My son is 15 and when/if he moves on I hope to get a condo or something I won't have to take care of. Definitely downsizing is in order.

When you own a house it's a full time job to keep on top of everything. Seems no matter how much we maintain there is always something that needs fixing or replacing. I can hardly remember a week that I have not either replaced, repaired, painted, sealed, or completely redone something. Now I am getting prices on a new driveway.........

As I get older I am getting a little better with keeping up on the things that have to be done to keep this house and yard up. Especially the yard. The past winter was pretty bad but April was good enough that we could clean up the yard in manageable chunks.

Two more years (and two more large renovations) and I may be able to retire.

Then there is Mom's place, Ma in Law's house and my own. I very nearly have the know how to tackle anything, just takes longer than someone who knows what they're doing, and can almost afford to pay to get it done.

Just have to pick my battles.
Yesterday's storm rearranged the tree in my front yard. That one I need some help.

Add to the thoughts accurately mentioned previously and then aging limitations, and add a serious health issue that can limit your ability to do things you previously enjoyed and were able to do yourself in reasonable time limits!

Sometimes it is best to concentrate on the parable about having leg pains and then you met a man with no legs!

Exactly! Be HAPPY that your physical condition makes doing all of those things even fall within the realm of possibility.

This Spring I have been getting the jump on the chores. I have already Summarized the Snow Blower, changed the oil in the Generator, changed fluids and tune-ups in cars and motorcycle, changed whole house water filter, started up sprinkler system and replaced broken heads, planted flowers, had the spring clean-up done on the property, and now am building myself up to open the pool, do the power washing and put out all the patio furniture. Man, I am tured just thinking about it!

I retired just a little over a year ago. I wonder how I got anything done around here when I was working?? I'm usually of a mind set that if you do something right the first time you won't have to repeat said project. The house doesn't agree. Weather just does stuff. We had a pretty rough winter and it beat the house and the property up pretty good. Oh well. Nose to the grindstone.

Amen to that. It's easy to forget how blessed you are to be even modestly physically capable until you visit the old folks home and see people who literally struggle just to get up out of a chair, or to feed themselves the provided, already prepared food, or to walk a few steps to the lavatory or their bedrooms. If that doesn't convince you, I don't know what will.

My Dad used to interrupt my occasional whining about one thing or another and say, "Problems are made to be handled!" (In other words, "Get busy handling them!") After a couple-hours trip to the retirement home, handling them doesn't seem so bad.

Good advice here. Me and my swolled up knee took care of the blowdown and hanging tree branches from yesterday. I even fixed a balky tool drawer, but that was more an excuse to use the work bench to hold my beer.

On a good note Gladiator (Whirlpool) is going to send me a dozen or so drawer stops after I told them the originals wore out. N/C.

Dozen years back we installed an entire new water system; pump,on demand water heater, softener, etc. Just this past week we have had our first bit of trouble. Pressure switch or pressure sensor is on the fritz. Pressure goes to almosy 0 before it ramps up to max. Then repeats.

Call the guy who installed and he's now retired. But suggested another fellow.

Call him and he can be here Monday (yesterday). It's now Tuesday at almost 3:30 Pm and no one here, NO call, NO nothing.

I have few issues with the joys of home ownership but DO have issues with most of the folks required to do some of the work.

Luckily we have a GREAT electrician. Johnny on the spot, very professional and a joy to work with.

It's anyone to do with WATER.

I think it's one of those "Life in rural America" deals. Joe Sixpack is half way handy, so he decides to be a Plumber. Buys a few magnetic signs for his truck, posts some ads and he are a Plumber.

I swear thats what I get whenever I call one. Some guy who is a lousy business man, a lousy repairman. BUT by God he wants top pay, mileage to and from and I need to pay by cash or check immediately.

Yeah. I am NOT in a good mood after cooling my heels waiting for this guy the past two days.
