How did cop with handgun kill two bad guys with rifles? (Photo of site added)
Any published reports on how the courageous cop in Texas used a handgun to take down two bad guys with rifles?
Edited Thursday Evening:
This photo shows how close the cars were during the fight -- and the orientation.
If the cop with the Glock was on the driver's side of the grey car, he could have exited and taken cover behind the engine block, giving him a 15 yard shot supported by the hood.

I agree but never expect an accurate story until a week later. Let all the tabloids like CNN and the others write their sophomore attempts first.

A classic case of hitting what you are shooting at versus just shooting.

My speculation is that the cop was a Marine and/or a Veteran of a tour in Iraq or Afghanistan. I also suspect that he is a crack shot with his service piece.
On the other hand, I suspect that the would-be mass murderers did not know how to use their weapons.
What matters is skill set and mindset.

The only account I have seen so far stated the policeman made the shots with a revolver.
Are there any LEOs still armed with revolvers?
And he was Traffic, not SWAT

AP are saying that after the security guard/cop returned fire and "subdued" the assailants, SWAT chimed in. AP also says both were wearing body armour. I'm wondering if they looked bulked out like they were carrying vest bombs and SWAT decided to terminate with extreme prejudice. Works for me. Difficult to press the trigger on a bomb with your brains spread over a couple of square yards.

Related to this excellent question is this: if the police suspected trouble because of the subject matter of the contest, why didn't they have their own shoulder weapons?

I remember an instructor saying once a long time ago (and he probably didn't come up with it, because I've read it elsewhere since):
"Surviving a gunfight is 90% situational awareness, mental preparation, tactics and training, and maybe 10% what kind of gun and ammo you use. Unfortunately, a lot of wannabe gunfighters spend 90% of their time obsessing about their gun and ammo, and the other 10% watching action movies."
A bit harsh, but there is truth to that, and without knowing anything more about what happened in Texas, that cop may just have had his priorities straight.

Garland is a very large suburb of Dallas with a top-notch PD. The report I saw said he was a patrol officer and SWAT was on the other side of the building when it went down.

A man who used the skills he had perfected appropriately.
He had never fired his weapon "on duty". How many of you (myself included) were lucky enough to pass their entire LEO career without having to do that? I was, and am glad for that. In the part of my life where I used weapons, no one complained.

Maybe those jihadi wannabees should have read those bumper stickers, don't mess with Texas.
Hooray for the valiant officer that put his or her self at risk of death in order to protect others. Using a handgun to defeat two assailants with long guns demonstrates tremendous courage and competence under duress. If it was a Bourne film I would have said that's Hollywood nonsense but it goes to show what a crack shot with nerves of steel can do.

He was alert and aware, spotted the situation early on, and he was ready mentally and physically to proceed with no hesitation. At the same time, he was confident in his weapon and his ability to use it effectively. A very great number of folks who hold a weapon are not really prepared to use it right now! This man didn't dilly-dally around, and he wasn't caught not looking. He did not start out behind, especially mentally. He was on top of his game.
I don't know exactly what happened. But I can tell you that this man was ready, and the two guys with rifles were not. There is a lesson here for us. If we have no clue something is or might be coming, you know where we start, and it's really hard to catch up when you start out behind!

Local news here in Central Texas is reporting the officer in question is 60 years old, with 38 years of service.

It sounds like a gun control issue to me.
He controlled his gun a lot better than they did theirs.

Bravery, street savvy, and my thought is a guy who probable practiced with whichever weapon he carried and did what he HAD to do. Beware the man who carries one gun, as they say.

Somehow we've accepted that a handgun is nearly a useless appendage on a cop's belt. I've had new agents try to take a rifle to the door on a knock-and-talk. I blame these competing shooting schools for the ridiculous though widely held belief that "the only thing a pistol is good for is to fight your way to a rifle".
If that was the only thing a pistol was good for, wouldn't it have happened by now?
This copper kept his head and ate those two dummies for lunch. That a cool head with a pistol will beat two morons with rifles shouldn't surprise anyone.

That might help explain the revolver, if that's what he used. The 38 years of service could go a long way toward explaining steadiness and accuracy, too.

That is a valid statement for a soldier in combat. If you are close enough to use a sidearm, things are beyond bad, and not likely to get better. To kill the gooks in the wire, a rifle is best.

CNN just announced that the officer used a .45 caliber Glock. He was on traffic detail.
Nicely done.

Wasn't there an attack in Texas a few months ago that was stopped by a police office who was holding his sidearm in one hand and the reigns of his horse in the other hand?

104 yard shot
Aloha,
Here you go.
Austin PD mounted unit Sgt holding reigns of 2 horses
drops BG with one shot at 104 yards
Cop Drops Active Shooter from 104 Yards with M&P .40, While Holding His Horses -
Seems to me, BGs never learn not to mess with Texas cops.

Jest having a rifle....Does not make one a rifleman.
Anymore than owning a guitar makes one a musician....
Good shooting on the officers part.

I know nothing about this specific situation. But in general :
Situational awareness , good tactics , cool under pressure, and skill with his weapon.
Makes me feel old to say it was aprox 22yr ago , but one of our officers scored a 76yd first shot hit on an escaped prisoner ( not one of ours ) in the midst of attempting an armed carjacking to further his escape. ( Ofc had Sig P226 9mm , the felon had M10 taken from the Correctional Ofc he knocked unconcious when he was uncuffed at the hospital for "treatment" .)

That's what it sounds like to me. Too busy shooting the place up to notice the cop that closed on them from the rear. Sounds like the cop had the element of surprise and was close enough to do what he had trained for. It's hard to know what his weapon was as some reporters call all duty weapons revolvers. In a close range engagement I'm going with a full sized pistol and a few spare mags every time.

TV news this morning stated the Officer is wanting to keep his info out of the news. Sad state of affairs in our world today our heroes have to stay undercover because he doesn't want to be threatened !!!! The comment they made was an auto pistol was used. Most all depts these days all officers use the same weapons as side arms. Old guys rule! As the tee shirts says. Salute to you Garland Officer.

Apparently he did not read Internet forums that said he did not have a chance. Maybe just maybe, God was on his side.
I wil thank my God for his success.

People today grossly underestimate the potential of a handgun.
A feller that knows how to use it can be quite effective even at ranges that would astound today's average pistoleer.

Not that I need a reason but--ill be taking a revolver out by next week and feeding it about three hundred rounds. Been too long since last range trip. The Rough Rider better live up to its name.
