Default Hey LEOs - did any of you carry the same handgun for your whole career?

I think I'm going to pull it off.

I bought this Sig P220 in 1991 while I was in the academy. As soon as I got to my first office I qualified with it and gave my issued 226 to a guy on the bank fraud squad who need to transition out of his Model 13. (Heresy, I know.)

24 years later we're still doing our thing. Louisiana, Montana, Idaho, New Mexico, and now Colorado. It's grandfathered in - a term guaranteed to make a guy feel old.

Its kind of nice in a Glock world to still carry a pistola with a hammer and wood grips.

So - have any our resident LEOs kept the same heater for their whole time in the bag?

I carried a Colt Govt. Model Series 70 in 45acp for the first 8 years and then a S&W Model 4006 for the last 12 years. Did carry the same S&W Model 60 as a BUG for the entire time. Still own all three handguns.

I would have, but never had any say in the matter. In 34 years, I went through a model 10, a model 36 3", a Sig P228, and a Sig P226.

How about same *Issued* duty ammo in 2015 as in 1982 , albeit multiple employeers inbetween ? And did have a streatch mid '80s - early '90s with wide latitude of gun/ ammo , albeit the default issues would have been the same.

Nope. I've swapped around some. Still have them all and sometimes work one or two back into the carry rotations, duty/off duty/backup, but they all mean just as much. Ok, that's not true - a couple have earned the right and mean just a bit more.

Pretty cool that you've gotten that mileage out of that Sig!

Default Nope

Nope. Started with Dept. issued Model 10. Bought and Carried a Model 581, then Model 67, tried a Glock 19, then went back to a Model 66. Then Department standardized on Glock 22. Ended my career as an Administrator and wore a Colt DS in a Galco Speed Paddle. When I retired, was given the choice of a Glock 22 or my issued shotgun. They have the Glock 22 and I have the shotgun!

I knew an FBI bomb tech from New York who retired a few years ago. He was still carrying his S&W 1076 right up to the day he left. That guy was one interesting character!

No, started with a Smith 686, then a Glock 20, and later a Glock 22. I retired after 22 years in 2007.

Started out 1970's with S&W Mod 58 as department duty weapon. Later switched departments and carry what we want. Was introduced to Browning BDA .45 (SIG P220) with the heel magazine release. Carried it for awhile and later P220 with the American mag release. Carried the P220 until retirement 30+ years later. Loved the SIG P220 as it was just like me; old, worn out, and slow, but could still get the job done.

To the OP- Extremely cool you've carried the same SIG the whole time.

Me, not even close...

2002- Started reserve academy with a 5906
2006- Issued S&W SW99 40 in regular academy
2006- Graduated the academy and switched to a personally owned Glock 21
2008- Switched to Kimber 1911
2010- Switched to Springfield Professional 1911
2011- Switched to customized Colt Government
2014- Switched to Glock 17 with a Wilson barrel

I plan to go back the Colt when I end my current assignment this fall.

I have carried the same S&W 442 the entire time though as my BUG and off-duty. Love that little gun.

Hmmmm here's my list:

The only weapons I've carried my whole career is the awesomely awesome Remington 870 police.

1986: Smith Model 10 5"
1987: Smith 25-5 4"
1989: Smith 645
1989: Smith Mod. 66
1990: Smith Mod. 27 6"
1992: Sig 226 9mm
1997: Sig 226 .40
2001: Glock 22 .40 and Glock 27 .40 for plainclothes

(Authorized) long guns were: '86-90, WWII-era M-1 Carbine, bayonets not allowed.
2005-present M-4 style Bushmaster carbine
Entire career: The venerable Remington 870 police. Just keeps going and going and going....

Off-duty I still carry the model 649 I bought in '86 a lot.

If you don't retire within the next 18 months, you'll be switching. Was just down at Quantico Monday...all of the Sigs, the Glock 21, and all 1911's are coming off the POW list. No more SWAT 1911 carry. Lots of folks unhappy about that!

I'm mandatory in a year. I heard all the .45s were coming off immediately, then saw something Friday that they were going to grandfather the 21s and 1911s for the foreseeable future. I think I'll make it.

Have you seen anything about the Colt LE6940 going on the POW list?

1978 -Colt Official Police 4"
1985 -S&W Model 64 (because of a holster change that wouldn't accommodate any Colt frame sizes)
1994 -Glock 22

For 12 years and 5 months of a 13 year career, I carried this S&W Model 58.

When the Patrol went to and required carry of that issue Model 66 "pop gun", I went back to ranchin'.

Yes, the Colt is going on the list...soon. It will be all set up for optics with a flat top and co-witness iron sights, and a rail up front for a light. The EOTech is going away...problems with change of zero when there are temperature extremes (zeroed in a hot summer, in cold winter zero shifts). Aimpoints still allowed.

Hopefully I can make it with mine but I have heard rumors that we may do away with POW's completely. You remember this one don't you?

I heard you moved north, hope everything is well!

I wasn't even released on my own a full year when we switched from Glock 37s and POWs after a year on patrol to everybody, except UCs, carries Gen4 Glock 17s. A lot of people weren't happy. Neither was I. I was going to switch to an S&W 625 or 4506 if I couldn't get training cadre to approve of the revolver.

I hear ya! When I started in 99 we were issued G17. When you got off FTO you could get a POW approved. Some years later the issued weapon was switched to the G31 because someone thought it was the best ever. After a few years of cracked slides, frames, rails, etc. we switched again. 16 years later guess what we issue...G17.

My first issue was a S&W Mod. 10, which I quickly replaced with my own 686 for road patrol, and a 66 snubby for backcountry foot patrol. I carried both until we transitioned to Sigs, and carried a P229 .40 until I retired 20 years later.

Default Duty guns

First, Sigp220.45 - congrat's on your upcoming retirement.

73-2008 and I have a laundry list of sidearms that I carried, all of them with the exception of the 58 & 49were agency issued sidearms.

1973-78 model 15 - agency required - 158 gr LRN Changed agencies in 78
79-85 model 58 ( after I carried a issued 686 from 78-79.) Changed agencies in 86
86-88 model 10 HB w/ +p+ 110gr Treasury loads - agency issued both revolver & ammo.
88 - 95 S&W 659 then 5904 9mm ( agency mandated for SWAT)
96 - 2002 Sig 9mm ( agency mandated) 115 gr SXT's
02-08 Sig 229 in 40 S&W - then 357 sig ( agency mandated)
Carried a M-49 for my bug the whole time - sometimes approved & sometimes - not so much (got to be superstitous about not carrying it - still am). The 58 & 49 were POW's and I still have them.

Thanks, Brandon. I kind of snuck out of town. I remember your 1911 well - I hope you can arm-twist some ammo out of Bill!

Good gosh, no....

My first three years I carried a different 4" K-frame Smith every 4 to 6 weeks. From there the progression went like this:

4" model 29
1911 steel frame Colt Commander
Beretta 92SB (the predecessor of the 92F)
S&W 586 (when I changed Depts to one which didn't allow semi-autos except for Tactical and CID officers)
...back to the 92SB (when I made Tactical 6 months later)
Sig 226
Beretta 92F (When it became the Tac Unit standard)

You've got a good run going there Sigp..... finish strong and stay safe. You've already done 2 years more than I did.

Never understood the 3-5 year cycles that seem to be the norm....... the last 20 years or so..........

My Dad:

1938/39 a 6" Colt New Service in .357magnum w/ King sights and action job....... was still his primary carry as a Lt. into the mid-60s.

Promoted to Capt. his primary became his 4" M&P he bought in 1946

Somewhere in the 50s he got a 2" Colt Detective Special for off duty.

Qualified with all three until he retired after 39 years.............

He was a shooter and reloader (for the Dept Pistol Team) these guns all had "thousands" of rounds through them..............The New Service was both his service and bullseye gun.

He had me get him a Model 640 after he saw mine in about 88/89.....which became his primary carry gun until .... he passed at 88.

Its kind of nice in a Glock world to still carry a pistola with a hammer and wood grips.

?
My W German 220 from the late 80s is one of the last guns that I would give up..... light and fairly easy to conceal..... it will shoot cloverleafs at 50 ft.

Retired after 20 years, 4 months---first 9 years with the 1st PD I was with I carried a Sig P226 in 9mm. Next dept, for 3 years, carried a Sig P226 in .40, and the same with my last department for the remaining 8 years of my career.

As for off duty guns----countless because I couldn't make up my damned mind.

HQ City, DN. I figured I would ride out my time on a Safe Streets Task Force, but Mother Bureau knew better so I'm on the JTTF, chasing ISIS wannabees around.

These guys: Haugen Handgun Leather - Bismarck, Mandan, North Dakota

I got it from a member here when my old one went missing. They made the mag pouch, too. Its a great holster - easy on and off, but it stays put on the belt.

I personally am not a LEO but my father and grandfather were

Dad (25 yrs):
S&W .357 till sometime in the 80's, not sure what model but it closely resembled the 686 I shot this weekend at the range and what I learned to shoot on.
I think from like 84 or 85 till the end he carried a dept issued G17.
Grandfather (33 yrs):
I don't ever remember him carrying anything but a S&W .38 snubby he had one of those grips on it that allowed you to just stick it in your wasteband no holster required. At some point he bought a Walther PPK as a back up he carried in an ankle holster, he started carrying that I think in the late 70's early 80's before he retired.

Nope. In just fifteen years I've carried four different handguns.

Sig Sauer P220 (2000-2003)

Sig Sauer P245 (2003-2006) - My detective years

In 2006 my department went to a general issue. I had a choice of either the Glock 21 or the Glock 19. I choose the G19

Glock 19 3rd Gen (2006-2013)

Glock 19 4th Gen (2013-Present)

1981-83 S&W M64 4" (mine)
1983-84 Dan Wesson 4" .357 (mine)
1984-1988 S&W M64 (issued when I was transferred from jail to court security) Everything from this point on was issued.
1988 S&W M64 .357 Magnum (yes, they did exist. SN#672999 was this one.)
1989-1998 Glock 17
1998-2005 Glock 22
2005-present Glock 23.

Too many off-duty guns over the years to list. Lots of snub .38s and Glock 26 and 27.

Not a chance.

In 3.5 years, I've carried a S&W M&P 9mm and now a Glock 34, both personally owned, and a Glock 26 as backup.

Hopefully, I new agency will be paying the bills next year, and most likely a Glock 22 issued.
