My wife and I just finished building a new house and we need a vacation bad! I was just sitting here thinking about traveling and all of the different states I have been to and I counted up all of them but 14. Most of the New England states I have not visited yet, but has anyone been to all 50?

Just took a quick look at a road atlas and came up with 16 I've missed. Upper New England, the northern tier, Alaska and Hawaii.

Hope to remedy that someday.

The wife and I completed the list back in 2007 when we went to Hawaii. We spent a lot of time camping back in the 60's-70's & 80's so we covered a lot of ground over those years. Alaska is still my favorite, I use to live there and still can't get enough of it.

Missing Hawaii, my family traveled a lot as a kid. Bad thing is I don't remember several because I was a toddler. Don't think I'll ever bingo for all 50, I hate the beach.

Been most everywhere except some in the NE.

I've been to all 49 on the North American continent. Hawaii is not on my must do list. Many of the 49 were business trips so mostly airports, hotels and conference rooms. Business travel ain't that glamorous and schedules can be taxing. One of my last trips before retiring was business to Trinidad and Tobago in winter(wife came for the sun but all clouds). Believe me 6 hours in a 737 cattle car from Houston ain't fun.

Now that I'm retired and air travel is what it is, I prefer driving vacations. I still have a compulsion to cover lots of miles per day but I'm gradually giving it a rest..

There is an online organization for people who have been to all 50 or are trying to. You have to have been to a certain number (about two-thirds?) before you can join.

I don't think there are any firm rules but some people make their own. Like you can't just drive through, or you can't have a layover at an airport. Others have to spend a night, eat a meal, etc.

I am missing the NW and NE. The Army saw to it that I got to Alaska and Hawaii. Spent a total of 4 hours in the 2.

I've been to several states. There are several I have no wish to see and a few that I have seen I don't wish to see again.

I have been to all except Alaska and Hawaii; on a motorcycle. Not all in one trip but still....

I'v had two trips planned to Alaska, but both, (so far) fell through. I don't want to just be in the state, I want to ride in it.

I succeeded in my a goal of riding to all, (but Hawaii and Alaska); along with going to each of the four compass points of the U.S. and the kinda remote, "Four Corners" area of AZ,CO,NM, and UT.

Everybody knows the "southern-most" point is Key West, Fla., but some of the "points", are not so evident.
For instance, east-most is in Maine, "down east" as they say. "Ayup" ! Northern-most in Minn.; and while I thought surely the point at Capetown in Cal. was western-most; the folks I asked for directions in Crescent City,(just north of there) lay claim to the "honor".

But,...the folks just up the road in Oregon, vow and declare Cape Blanco is the western edge of the U.S. They note "you can not use a straight edge ruler on a flat map", cause the earth is "roundish". Who knew ?

The center of the contiguous United States is Kansas alright; just like Dorothy said. There's a marker located at the intersection of "AARoad" and K191, accessed by a turn-off from U S 281, a mile north of Lebanon, KS.

I got started on this "see the USA"; not by Dinah Shore and Chevrolet, but by a $3.95 Atlas from Walmart in 1996. Better late than never, I didn't set this goal for myself till I was 56.
Near the front cover was a list of "100 places every American should see".
The usual Niagara Falls, Grand Canyon, of course, and I realized most all of these places were no more than names to me, and decided to try and do something about it. So far, so good.

The other part of my motorcycling hobby was to go to both ends of a highway; for instance I 40, I 95, US rt.2, US rt. 50, and many more.

I learned a lot about people in these travels, and what sticks out the most is the old adage about "judging books by covers", and "painting all with a broad brush".
You just can not lump people into the cubby holes, of where they are from. By that, I mean you can not judge people from Mich. by what we see and read of Detroit. Same for N Y city, Atlanta, Baltimore, and all the rest of the country.

The places that get all the headlines have little or nothing, relating to the people "out yonder" in the rest of the state.

My contribution here is a bit more "longish" that I intended, and what the OP asked. Pardon me.

Working on it! Got Hawaii last year and only Wisconsin, North Dakota, and South Dakota to go. Maybe next year, but it won't be in the winter!!

As a matter of fact I have. In my first carreer as a Construction Engineer/Construction Manager. I wound up as the VP in charge of all construction jobs over a certain $$$. We did a lot of work for the US Government and over 20 years, I hit every state at least once. Some of them I didn't see much of because of the intenseness of the construction schedule. Others, I got to look around a little. Also, in that time I was flying myself in single engine aircraft here and there in the USA and used that to 'divert' a little once in a while to see something interesting that I hadn't before. Don't misunderstand, I didn't count flying over a State as having been there. I actually have been on the ground in every State. ..............

About 29 states for me and counting.

I'm working on it. 26 states, western Europe, and down under so far. I'll retire next year and get after it.

Been to all 48 by the time I was 14, Alaska and Hawaii ween't states yet. Was stationed in Alaska later, and made Hawaii on R&R from RVN.

Some I just flew into on business and flew out so I didn't really get to tour. For some reason or other, I enjoyed every state I've visited with the except of Eastern New Jersey. I wished I had been able to see the western part of the state because I hear it's pretty nice. I went to Houston when things were really bad economically and it didn't think it was a whole lot better than NJ. I'm not judging the whole of Texas by that one visit. But those are the two places I've been in the country that I actually disliked being there.

I need to do New England and the West coast. I'm more interested in Yosemite and the NW. SW California has no attraction for me.

Really. I need ND and WI. What do I need to see when I get up there?

All but Oregon. Alaska several times courtesy of the Air Force; every time in the dead of winter. I still don't know what summer in Alaska is like.

Been to 49, missing only Alaska. Folks traveled a lot on vacations, I've moved a bit and traveled when I could. Saw Pacific Northwest, Southwest, and Midwest on a motorcycle.

Great people, gun friendly, lots of hunting, 3.1% unemployment rate.


Can't say without knowing your interests. Something for everyone, though, take a few days off and enjoy the Wisconsin lake country during summer.

All but AK, HI , CA, and amazingly MI ( in hind sight should have detoured the cpl miles from the Indiania Tpk). All by car growing up.

This thread makes me feel like a bad parent , son -15 , daughter 17 . 6 of those were when she was 6wo , and he was 2yo , so not as if they realized.

Like you I really enjoy seeing our country on a motorcycle. I've ridden through the lower 48 and all but one Canadian province. This has been over a number of years though. For riding a long road end to end I've done Rt 50 from Ocean City MD to Sacramento and except for maybe DC and St Louis congestion it's a pleasant road to ride and you make pretty good time. Sunday I'm leaving for AZ. I'll get on 50 (which is about 40 miles south of me here in WV) and take it to St Louis but then I have some other little roads in mind across Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, Utah, to Arizona.
August ride will be up through New England, Maine, New Brunswick, to Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. I did Nova Scotia and Quebec around 15 years ago but haven't been to Newfoundland.
I've ridden most of 41 which runs from Miami to Copper Harbor on Michigan's U.P. but not on a continuous ride.

but my grandparents visited 48 of 50. Only missed Hawaii and South Dakota.
My grandmother had a very large brandy type glass that she would keep match books in that were collected along the way.
I could travel widely just by grabbing a handful.
My wife and I are trying to hit all but so far only hit 14.
