Default OK, I Guess You LEO Types Do See Everything

So the other day, my brother was sitting in his car talking to another deputy as you guys sometimes do. While they were sitting there discussing weighty legal issues such as where to eat lunch, a SUV goes driving past. With a cat sitting on the roof!!! My brother initiated a traffic stop and, although he didn't say, knowing him I'm sure the conversation with the driver was hysterical. As he described it all was well and the cat was safe back home.

Cats, of course, sit wherever they want to sit.

We always tried to keep the superpower of observation low key. If anyone finds out there will be protests and other complaints by the neer do wells.

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe." But gotta admit, I never saw a cat riding down the road on an SUV roof;-)

But you never wanted to announce that you had, in fact... "Seen it all". As then the ensuing incident was usually a paper work nightmare.

Same for the Highway Patrol biz...NEVER ever say... "Man. I haven't had a real messy fatal in awhile".

Also, never say... The "quiet" word, as in, "wow... It's really quiet tonight." Curses upon those who say it.

I was a homicide/major crimes detective.
The lab girl passed me in the hallway one day when I was working the 3-11 shift, and said, "I never get to work any good calls with you!"
Within hours we had an armed robbery and a double homicide.
The next time I saw her she looked away from me and ran down the hall.

Some years ago there was a guy driving down Forest Lane in Dallas with a bucket of fried chicken on the top of his car. He probably set it there while getting the kids strapped in and forgot it.

A Dallas police man stopped him, took the bucket off the roof and walked up to the drivers window. When handed the chicken the man said "Thanks, but I already have some".

True story.

. . .and a funny story, too. Thanks.

Reminds me of something that happened to my Dad. The LEO didn't witness it, but showed up soon afterward to help.

I was around 10-12 or so, and went with Dad to the grocery store one evening in our little home town a few miles away. We drank a good bit of pop(or "soda", "coke", etc. depending on where you live) in our family, and those were the days of bottled soft drinks packaged in stiff cardboard cartons, usually 8 to a carton.

When we were done I got in the car and then Dad put the groceries in the back seat and got in. We had just driven past the corporation limit and were picking up speed when we heard a CRASH! just outside the car. Dad turned and looked at me and his eyes were like the proverbial saucers. He had had the pop carton in the hand that he used to open the car door, and so put it on top of the car, opened the door, got in with the groceries, and left the pop on top.

What a mess. An officer showed up to direct traffic around it, and one of the townspeople got a heavy broom and moved all the shards of glass off the roadway(don't remember if someone brought a mop or not -I imagine the road was pretty sticky for awhile).

Didn't talk to the LEO -don't know if he had ever seen that happen or not. In a small town -probably not.

When I was little kid back in the 60s my family and I were waiting in a park for our cousins to meet us. This was in Pueblo Colorado a big city to us.

There was a another family having a picnic with about 8 or so kids. They packed up the their picnic items and almost all the kids and took off. Of course there was no cell phones or anything so Mom went over to the little girl who was left and brought her over to our picnic table. About 15 or 20 minutes later here comes a car tearing into the parking area and out jumps the other Mom and Dad hollering for the little girl and my Mom says she's with us. They were very relieved to say the least. Seems they had to meet someone and time got away from them and in their haste they forgot someone.

Hey, that is a good story and God bless your brother for looking out for the poor cat. I'm glad the cat made it back home in one piece.

When I started driving my Dad told me NEVER to put anything on the roof of a car you don't want to lose, or to temporarily put anything in the trunk (like your keys ) unless you intend to lock it in there. He was right. Years later while on vacation he set his camera on the roof and did not remember it - until it was too late. It's an easy mistake to make - too easy.

Ahhh, but was the cat enjoying the ride? Maybe he was up there on purpose.

Family with 5 or 6 kids, regular buying customers in my pawn shop went off one afternoon and left a kid behind. Little boy about 4, fortunately I knew what kind of vehicle they were driving and what direction they probably went. Called local LE, took about 1/2 hour to locate parents and another 20 min for them to get back and retrieve the boy. They had not missed him until stopped & informed by LE. Maybe they should have stopped at 3 or 4 kids.
