Default Discovery of a new Galaxie

not really, but its straight body and super clean. Probably garage kept.

can you image strolling in that ride in the 60s. gas was cheap and enough room for probably 8!!!!

my guess…61-62!

62 Galaxy 500...Thanks for the blast from the past. My dad brought one home to my mother back in around '64 or '65, it was her first car. Ours was a very similar color without the white top, a coppertone red in the right light. According to my dad it had been a local detective's car and still had the whip antenna on it with holes where the radio was installed. Police interceptor 390 and dualled off pipes, she sounded great and mom loved the big V8, it was her favorite car. It probably saved her life one night when a couple of kids in a V.W. sedan ran a stop sign in front of her on the highway, she hit them going at least 60-65, spun three times before coming to rest. Killed the kid in the driver's seat and messed up the passenger, sadly it totalled the Ford. She was broken hearted when all was said and done and she ended up with a '62 Chevy Belair with a mousey little 283.
Those '62 Galaxys were nice cars, I spent alot of time driving that one and got my first license behind the wheel of it and my dad's Karmann Ghia. Whenever I drove it I would get down the block and pull over, pop the hood, remove the air cleaner and then enjoy all the noise of the engine and the big four barrel sucking air and fuel. It wasn't what you'd call fast but still got right with the program especially if you hammered it to the floor, nice big roomy car.

And four more in the trunk if you were heading to the drive in movies. That one looks to be a sweet survivor.

Maybe a 352? The 351 didn't come along until '69.

and this cruise ship is a 2 door!!!!!!!

I have always liked that style of tail lights.

I see them and do a double take as I know it will be an older Ford.

Glad to see this was the Ford and not some silly iPhone knock off. It is cool to see an old Ford in such great shape. Those old full size cars were so big yet seem to offer much more visibility than most modern cars.

Love the big old Fords, especially the XLs, with the bucket seats. One of my buddies had a 62 500XL, it was nice. White outside and a pretty rusty red inside. They look even nicer when you can pop the hood and find a 405 HP 406, with 3 deuces.

A friend of mine writes a classic car column in the local fishwrap.

I asked him how come I never see many 60s Fords at Mecum and Barrett-Jackson. Always Chevies . . . SS396s and Camaros. He said it's cause the Ford owners don't want to let go of them. And he's a Bowtie boy.

I'd love to have a restomod '64 Fairlane.

My first car was a '64 Fairlane 500. 4-door, three on the tree, 170 six. Worthless little "no power" car.

Wish I still had it.

My Mom got a new 68 Galaxie XL Presidential Blue with a black vinyl roof. Hidden headlights, 390.

Nice car!

Wouldn't sell it to me unfortunately.

My folks bought a 64 Galaxie 500 new. Dark blue body, black convertible top. I was about 8, so no Idea of under the hood. I remember mom liking the car. Her first new car was a 52 Newport 2 door (in 53 the same car had a bigger carburetor and became the first 300). They live is Southern California then and mom loved drag racing Caddy DeVilles, Dad wondered why he had to put 4 auto clutches in within 2 years, he found out about her racing habit in 73 when she got a Sedan DeVille , she felt the power of the 476 CI V-8 and felt she "could beat any full sized Chrysler", Dad didn't speak to her for a week! Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

First car I remember riding in as a kid was a baby blue 64 Galaxie 500 my parents bought new. Dad built a little platform for the back seat that made a flat floor all the way to the back of the front seats. There was lots of room for us kids to sleep and/or play back there during long road trips. We didn't need no stinkin' car seats back then. Kids was tough in those days, I tell you.

Default I drove a '63...

It wasn't the 500 model. It was the stripped down version that did have a heater, but nothing else and power nothing either.
It had a 222 'mileage maker' engine that did 0-60 in about 30 seconds because it weighed a couple of tons. The one you found looks like a nice one!

My Dad's buddy had a 1964 Galaxy 500 that was in like new condition in the late 70s. It was Ray's baby but he wasn't afraid to get it out and drive it around town for errands and such things. I believe he still owned it a few years ago when he died and sure one of his sons wound up with it.
If I recall correctly it had electric windows and one of the first I'd seen of that era with that option.

The round tail lights of the early 60s Fords were marketing genius. We still looked up when a jet flew over. "Look, a jet!" Jets and rockets were icons of America. Ford incorporated that into their cars.

In 1965, they threw it away, giving us gawd awful angular ****. Chevy went voluptuous. And kicked Ford's heiny in sales.

Help me understand you better, Gamecock. The 65 & 66 Chevelle had rectangular taillights, and the 66 Impala had rectangular taillights, also the 65 & 66 Camaro. Their bodies had more rounded corners -is that what you're thinking???

I like the 65 & 66 Ford bodies & taillights. I like the previous years' also. In fact, my very first car was a 64 Galaxie -liked that one, too. Also liked the Chevys. I think the 60s cars were the pinnacle of auto body design. Not too aerodynamic, but surely attractive.

Regards,
Andy

A friend of mine had a '63 with three on the tree. First car with syncro first gear we had seen. It was like a miracle.

My first car. 1963 Fairlane 500 Sports Coupe, 260 2 barrel, 2 speed Ford-o-matic. Slow as Christmas. Pic taken in 1968, I was 15.

Wayne, thats a great pic, lucky guy there!
I was crazy about the '64 Galaxy, best looking Ford ever made IMHO. (Maroon and white, w/ white interior.)

Does anyone remember the '66 7 Litre (yep, spelled that way) Galaxie? I worked for a man who had one. It and about 500 or so of its sisters were built to homologate the 427 for NASCAR and other types of racing as a production engine/car combination. Sadly, he gave it to his granddaughter who drove it home from college and it burst a radiator hose on the way. She finished the trip and the engine at the same time. As I understand it, they were all two-door coupes finished in a copper color.

rcnixon, that's not really the way it was. The 66 7 Litre was actually just a 500XL with a 428 and unique badges. The 427 came out in 63 and was in NASCAR racing immediately, since the 427 was a standard production engine in Galaxies and Mercurys. I've seen 7 Litres in several colors. I once came close to buying a beautiful blue one. The 1969 Boss 429 Mustang was produced to allow it's engine in NASCAR. In 1965 or 66, Ford produced the SOHC 427 which was banned by NASCAR, and was never put in a production car. I think some 67 Galaxies were made with the 7 Litre package. They also used a 7 Litre emblem on the rare 1968 427 GT-E Cougar.

Default I had a three on the tree.....

Mine was a three on the tree, too. After everybody in my family wore it out, you just had to 'know' where the stick went to put it in any gear. The linkage would lock up and I'd have to get out and grab and shake them loose.

A guy in our neighborhood had a yellow one these that he kept in the garage. Took it out on Sundays, drove it enough to charge it up, wash it and put it back. while I was there until the late 70's he did this and continued through the 80's when I lost track after my folks moved. I'd like to see that car now.

Thanks for the correction, Wayne. I worked for Mr. Cornwell, the owner, in about 1969 and the memory sometimes dims.

Oh, the memories. After my grandpa passed, Grandma got a new 62 Galaxie 500xl. It was a 2 door and beige. She kept it till she got remarried and bought a new Buick convertible, which my brother bought from her before she passed.

My first car when I graduated from college was a used 62 Galaxie (white with red interior) hardtop with a 405 engine, three progressive 2-barrel carbs, and a Hurst floor shifter. A really hot car and a great babe magnet. After I got married a few years later, it became very impractical. I sold it to some kid who had it about two weeks before crashing it into a West Virginia bridge abutment while fleeing a cop, totalling it.

My mom had one like that - '61, yellow.

It was a great ride back in the day.
