Actually, there are numerous minor variations of both of those helmets depending on their exact period. I can't give you a website, but there are some concerning militaria and helmets which you can use to determine exactly what you have and when they were in use.

International Military Antiques (IMA) has many types of the 1917 or more correctly British Brody Helmet with lots of close up details of the head liner. If it is not a U S helmet then it is British. There should be markings inside around the rim or under the liner giving maker and date made.

Helmet on left is most likely British.

On right is a US steel pot, probably post WW II.

The left model was used by US National Guard units up to the start of WWII. It is typical in pictures from WWI, but Guard units used whatever was left over until they entered active service in WWII.

Google M1 helmet restoration. There is a company in Wisconsin that restores M1s and has a pretty good description of the manufacturers, changes, and production. They also sell parts to restore the suspension webbing in the liner. If I recall correctly there were two production runs of U.S. M1s, most were made during WWII and a second run was made during Vietnam. The liners changed more often with several variations.

During the Cold War several NATO countries made M1 copies for their armed forces including the Danes, Belgians, Austrians, and Germans. We supplied other NATO allies.

There were a number of this 'n that minor design changes in various components and materials throughout the fairly long period the M1 helmet was in use (WWII through 1985). It is difficult to find a completely period-original M1 helmet as things got swapped around and replaced over time. Some good information on helmets here: http://toppots.net/main.php?do=clien...me&link_id=140

You also have to be wary on the GI lid.The Bundeswehr used lids of our WWII style, and the easiest way to tell the diff--is look at the liner.Their liner was done like ours but,the webbing system inside is like what they used in WWII.

If you google the "history of the military helmet" an interesting site comes up which covers cloth and leather as well as steel helmets.

Every M1 helmet I was ever issued had a date stamped inside near the attachment point for the strap.

The oldest was the helmet I was issued in OCS - made in 1943. About half way through the spot welds for the strap bracket on the left side finally broke in the field. The DI naturally pointed out it was all my fault. I threaded some green duct tape through the ring for the strap, then ran about a foot of it up over the inside of the helmet where it was sandwiched under the helmet liner. It worked so well that I just finished the course with it rather than trying to find the time to go get another one. I suspect it got decommissioned after I turned in back in.

It's too bad as my mess kit was also stamped 1943, making them something of a matched set.

I liked them a lot more than the K-Pot - you could do all kinds of things with the M1 that you couldn't do with a K-Pot.
