Military ID card for vets who aren't military retirees
I haven't seen a thread about this yet, but if I missed one please delete.
Apparently a law authorizing the issuance of a military veteran card to guys who did some time but didn't retire (thereby getting a retired ID card) has passed and is awaiting signature.
Congress Passes Law Creating ID Card for Veterans | Military.com
Some states will put a veteran indicator on a DL, but not all do and not everyone has a DL.
The VA will issue a health card, but not everyone qualifies for VA health care (I don't).
It seems like a good idea to me. I never ask for the vet discounts and I don't walk around with a DD-214, but it would be nice to have the card. I wonder if it would work to shop in the commissary or BX?
Would you get one?

Reason: Can't spell commissary.

Don't sound like a bad idea - but -
the VA is dancing as fast as they can.
They need to work on the problems they already have.
Dumping a massive new program on them is probably going to really jam them up!
Commissary and BX privileges? Doubt it.
These privileges are under budgeting attack and may go away for those of us lucky enough to have them.
I don't care that much for the BX but go to the Kirtland AFB Commissary on a regular basis.

Veteran ID
Looks like the VA will have the responsibility for issuance. By itself, it has the same value as a DD214, in terms of identifying a person as one who served in the Armed Services. That's it.
No benefits are attached to having one other than it may provide a means to determine that the holder served.
My retired military ID card does more for me than get me through the gate to shop at the NEX and Commissary and I know that our benefits as retired vets are on the line everytime Congress meets. Frustrating as some of this stuff can get at times, I am fortunate, and I know it.
Some retired Vets from other countries have little or no benefits attached to their service - and don't have any ID card of any kind to show for it. For whatever need/reason - I think any US Vet that wants a Govt issued ID indicating their service, should be able to obtain it. I also think state issued DL's with that type of endorsement is good idea.

Ohio only puts the emblem on Your Drivers License and most Stores wont accept that,I know Lowe's wont. And the V.A wants way too mutch imformation for Me to get a Medical Card even though I qualify for one. So the I.D. card is a good idea.

My Ohio driver license has it and Lowes honors it with 10% discount every time I go there.

There are discounts/benefits offered up in the private sector by companies that honor service. I take advantage of some. If this makes it cheaper and easier for vets...I am all for it.

The major reason is many retailers will offer discounts for veterans. Home Depot is one, usually 10%. I know I saved over $80 when doing some work in my bathroom. I know IL just passed putting Veteran on the drivers license.

I have no problem with the idea but some concerns about implementation. Perhaps DoD could issue such a card to servicemen at time of separation and VA could issue to prior service based upon DD214 with a modest fee for processing and issuing the cards (say $15 or $20). Over the course of years it would then become a standard procedure at time of separation from the service and VA would not have to be involved.
When Colorado started issuing Purple Heart license plates (about 1988 or so) the veteran had to take a DD214 to the county Veterans Service Officer and obtain the authorization form, then pay a one-time $10 fee for the plates. Later (about 2004) Colorado started allowing one set of Purple Heart plates per year to qualifying veterans at no charge (no registration fee, no road use tax, no license plate fees, etc) which I have enjoyed since.

Some states wave training requirements for vets for the purposes of a concealed carry licence. This constitutes a significant savings, since some of these classes are expensive and time consuming.
Also, there are times when proving veteran status with an ID card would be preferable to presenting a DD214. There may be personal information on a DD214 a vet would want to keep confidential.
I like the idea of an ID card, since I've never been comfortable about handing out copies of my DD214 willie-nilly.

Yes I would. Having recently made several "high dollar" purchases at Lowes on household appliances & lawn equipment. An extra 10% discount would have be very NICE!

The reason for the program has little to do with helping veterans out, though this is the ostensible reason. It is all about tracking them. Remember the report from a few years back that identified veterans as a major area of domestic concern? Too many are three percenters etc. This is designed as an additional means of keeping track of veterans, gathering information, etc.

Here in Virginia you can get a veteran's card from the DMV. Just take a copy of your dd-214, pay $10 and they will send you a card with your picture from your driver's license on it. Lowes, BassPro and lots of other businesses give you at least a 10% discount with your card.

Anybody that has served in any branch of service, the Government have all kinds of info on each and every one of us. They can track me all they want if I get my 10% off on home remodeling, lawnmowers, roofing painting etc. its saved me quite a few bucks this year as she who must be obeyed is in the process of redoing everything. I may be next.

I worked on a base for almost 20 years. My job did take me occasionally into both the commissary and the BX, but not being a retiree, and being a civilian, I couldn't buy anything (unless I was on TDY to another base, which I did a lot). I can truthfully say that about the only advantage to shopping at either a commissary or a BX/PX was that you didn't have to pay state sales tax on taxable merchqandise. Prices didn't seem any better than the local stores.

Check with your county court house. In my county, you take your DD214 to the clerk, they enter it into their system, take your picture and present you with a veterans ID card. They give you a sheet full of places that offer discounts and thank you for your service. It was a painless process and I appreciated their sincerity.

Call me strange but I have no problem carrying a copy of my DD214 in my biker wallet with my other required license's. Never had to prove that I haven't "stolen valor" but have it in case someone calls me a lire. I saw they had passed this and wonder what information will be on it or it just says you served.

I use both the Kirtland BX and Commissary. The BX actually sells guns now and their prices aren't bad. If vets could all use these facilities, perhaps they could sustain themselves and keep prices down. Then perhaps they wouldn't have to worry about cuts.

You do not have to paranoid to recognize a blatant excuse to compile a database of all veterans, their current address, and a recent photo seems a tad...suspicious. The more so after the good, trustworthy folks at DHS peg vets as a potentially troublesome group to watch. Yeah, nothing to see here.
Odd that people who won't register their guns will gladly register themselves.
Don't matter to me, I am already in the system. I just find it funny how blatant it is

Quotes the new law. Note that the card confers no benefits...no exchange privileges etc.

The VA should already have a database of vets.
They don't need a new law to get us all in a data base.
We are already in there!

One of the first things that I did after my discharge was to take a copy of my DD214 to my county recorders office and have them record it. That was 45 years ago. I just recently discovered that stores were offering discounts to veterans. I suppose if I was buying a big ticket item it would be worth while to take a copy of my DD214 but not for small purchases. I did apply for the discount at Shooters Pro Shop online and they asked me to send in a copy but I never got around to it. The last time I placed an order with them I was pleasantly surprised when they gave me the discount. I will be asking for the card when it becomes available.

When I was released from active duty in '71, I was issued a pink ID card ( inactive Reserve)..I still have it and present it at Lowe's..HD is a little more hit and miss if they will accept it..
I even showed my USMC tattoo on my shoulder one time as proof..

In Florida, take your DD-214 to the DMV and for $5 they will put a "V" in the lower right hand corner of your driver's license.
Bass Pro Shop gives a 10% discount to veterans.

Doesn't even have to be a big ticket item. My local grocery store offers a 5% discount off the bill. Doesn't really sound like too much but if you shop for groceries a few times a month, it ads up.

The px/bx exchange system has been considering allowing veterans admittance due to dwindling revenue. This is a good idea, my wife and I both are retirees

Sorry, but I don't see this as a blatant anything. If "The Government" wants a database of veterans, the information is already there from a multitude of sources.
Besides, no one is required to get the I.D. card. Don't want it, don't get it. And to my knowledge, the cards aren't even available now. So this is all just worry and discussion over something that doesn't even exist.

Here in the state of Georgia, the people at the DMV told me where I had to meet someone from the VA to look at my DD form 214 (the courthouse I think). Got the "Veteran" status on my DL, and I never have to pay for another one again in the state of Georgia. Even if I lost it a hundred times. To answer your question, no I wouldn't get a military veteran card.

Arizona gives vets the option of having "VETERAN" printed on their drivers' licenses if they show qualifying documentation. Comes in handy from time to time.

I was fingerprinted for the first time 47 years ago- at the Induction Center.
Tattoos and noticeable scars were noted for those who had them.
Blood type was determined.
Pictures were taken.
Education, and where, recorded.
Home of record.
Next of kin.
SSN recorded, and later changed to my service number. (I had both)
My wisdom teeth were pulled while I was in, so they have dental x-rays.
Now, they even take DNA so there will never be another unknown soldier.
If you got a top secret clearance, the FBI investigated your background, even doing field interviews with neighbors and school personnel........
I think they already knows a whole lot about me.
Recent picture? They might be smart enough to check my new Vet's driver's license or CCL.
But, if I get one, I'm wrappin it in tin foil and keepin it in a hermatically sealed mayonaise jar!

I have one of the Service Connected cards from the VA so I probably would not bother. However I do think it is a good idea. As for being on someones "list" I'm a Veteran, have a CCW card, have a C&R FFL, I had a Secret clearance in the Army, I'm a Deacon in my Church and Commander of my American Legion Post. Besides, I hang out here so I'm sure I'm already on someones watch list.

I'm trying really hard not to be mean here. I know a very few veterans that actually retired from the military. I know several that did their 3 or 4 years and got out. I know many, many, many more that did less than a year, some who didn't even finish basic, before they were separated for the good of the service by mutual agreement. They all call themselves veteran's, and stand up in front of the crowd when veterans are honored at the school or park . . .
What's the baseline for getting a card?

Retirees and their spouses get access to the base exchange. My parents have been going for years.

I had top secret clearance in the USAF, all the military ID is on file. I had to file fingerprints again when buying a M1 Garand from the DCM. I had to submit fingerprints to FLorida for a non-resident CCL, (3 renewals). They have enough information on me it makes no difference any longer, and I already have a V.A. Service Connected I.D. but I'll probably have the "Veteran" designation put on my drivers license when I renew it the next time.

He's talking about non- retirees vets.
The BX is burdened by some heavy duty rules on what it can sell for how much. It's presently not competitive with Walmart and the other big box stores.
The commissary is still competitive, but also under budgetary pressure.
We have an old GI saying, it's a 'BeNo.'
There will be no more good deals.
I appreciate the numerous good deals that I have received. The younger troops deserve theirs too.

Some stores may extend the military discount to veterans just to avoid an argument but it's not Home Depot policy to give veteran's a discount every day.
According to Home Depot:
"All military personnel and veterans are eligible for a 10% discount at all The Home Depot store locations during national holidays such as Memorial Day, July 4th and Veterans Day.
Additionally, the 10% discount is available to active and reserve military personnel, retired or disabled veterans and their spouses or dependent children, every day, upon request."

I still have my Military ID and now a VA issued card and Lowes, Home Depot, Appleby's and Sonneys BBQ all honor either one of the cards.

Iowa puts Vet status on the drivers license. They also give us a property tax break and don't tax my retired pay. I even got a $500 bonus from them for Vietnam. They treat us pretty good.
Now if they would just exempt us from all taxes.

I know what your saying Muss.
I have Missouri issued Marine veteran plates.
It's better than keeping a copy (which could be bought on line) of my DD 214 in my glove box.
A lot of posers out there. Pity.

I used to work for the Pennsylvania dept of Transportation as a driver license examiner (DMV).
When PA started putting a flag on veterans driver license's someone decided it was discrimination to require documentation, so anyone can walk into PennDot and request a flag and they will put it on the license, with no proof or documents. I always hated that I couldn't request some kind of proof. Consequently a lot of retail places in PA won't accept the flag because it's so easy to get.

hostler,
here in MO you have to have present your original DD 214 at the DMV to request the plate.
Same as when I lived in Illinois.
This way at a bar, American Legion or VFW if some poser say's I ain't a Marine or veteran I'll take him out to the parking lot, point out my Mustang and then settle the dispute.
Usually never see em again.

Nevada has the option of putting your veteran status on your DL - I did. It works at Cabelas, Lowes, Home Depot, many restaurants, etc. It all adds up...

I know. Most states that offer veterans tags or licenses require some form of documentation. I have a problem with PA in that respect.

Sooo.... Year and a half old thread, anybody know if these cards came to fruition?
No, I wouldn't get one, I don't understand the need, unless you signed up for the service to get freebies. I wouldn't get vehicle plates or a driver's license that indicated veteran status either, as again I don't see the point other than braggadocio. It also opens up you and your vehicle to personal attacks, vandalism, etc.
