I've given up on a lot of things, being a tall guy.

I've given up on trying to be comfortable in Coach.
I've given up on finding shoes in the store that fit.
I've given up on getting angry when I bump my head.

I haven't given up on this hobby, but could use a bit of guidance from the cognoscenti here about fitment.


I love S&W revolvers, but the best-fitting grips for me are the X-frame Hogues and N-frame Targets. Anything else from the aftermarket come close to either of these ?

I never warmed to 1911s, since the thin grip never provided me with enough lateral support. I recently tried a double-stack 22TCM gun from RIA, and it felt better than any 1911 to date.


Do you folks have any other suggestions for grips or guns suitable to the larger hand ?

Have you tried the various SIG models in all metal semi-auto. They have a wide selection of available models and calibers. Their grips are made for larger hands.

I have the same problem. I don't think my hands are large but little guns like the Shield are too small and leave a lot of room in my hand. When I grip something I need to feel like I'm actually gripping and not just wrapping my fingers around it. Need to feel like I'm gripping a cup of coffee or 2x4 or something that takes up my hand. For the same reason I'm not a fan of the 1911 grips.

What I found works will depend on the actual gun. For something like a S&W 4506 I need Hogue rubber grips. For a Glock 21 I use a rubber grip sleeve. On 1911 you can get thicker wrap around grips. They'll provide more surface in the palm swell and side to side.

I have large hands also and I have discovered the SIG autos fit me very well. I have found the SIG 220 fits me like a glove and I like it so well, I have three of them -- one in my truck, one next to the bed and the last one in the drawer by the couch.

I also have a .44 Cal. AutoMag pistol and a .45-70 revolver, both of which are large handguns and I find them comfortable to shoot.

Herretts will custom make grips for your hand as will Nill.

dittos on Herretts. I've had only one set made for an N frame, Jordons. Great fit and nice looking and no rubber.

If you like a big hefty grip I would suggest to start saving up for a Ruger Redhawk. I’m talking about a classic Redhawk not the Super Redhawk. The grip frame was designed by Harry Sefried who had once worked for High Standard Manufacturing before being employed with Ruger. He was the designer for the Standard Sentinel revolver and loved the grip profile of the Sentinel so much that he incorporated a very similar grip design to the Ruger Security Six and Redhawk revolvers. Best I can describe it is it feels like somewhere between an N and X frame but with a little bit of hump on the back strap. You add a set of Hogue wood finger groove grips and the thing is a beast to hold.

If you want big grips for a Smith, those Hogue finger grooved ones really add some meat to hold on to.

I have not tried the all-metal Sig autos; I will put them on the 'list' for the next trip to the LGS.

I was not aware of the custom option through Herretts, either; that may be a source to consider. I do prefer wood in most cases, as long as fitment is good, as with some of the old Dan Wesson large wood grips.

Thanks also for the rec of the Ruger. I have been thinking about picking up a classic RedHawk in .357, and this just might accelerate such an acquisition.

A question if you please: When the X frame was introduced I read some where that the grip frame was the same size as the K frame, is that correct? I made the mistake of shooting a 500 on two separate occasions. Never again!!

The X frame does indeed share grip size with RB K/L frames.

The rubber X-frame grip will, however, 'stretch' to fit N-frame RB guns.

Sigs will do that nicely... The first time I picked up a P220, I knew it fit me well. Pachmayr Presentation grips also work well for me. Then, of course, are cokes...

If you want something in a 1911 frame, look into a Coonan model in .357...they got a big ole grip frame.
I've got long fingers and have trouble finding anything that fits me better than square butt N-Frame target grips. John C. even made me a beautiful set of square butt N-frame target grips for my round butt Mountain Revolver...made all the difference in the world.
The thing about big and tall is that you don't get any sympathy from any of the little short guys.

You should check out HKs. Especially the USP models. They have fairly large frame/grips, and the trigger guard is nice and large...

Not sure if Glock will work for you. I went to a gun show with my brother in law before, and he was looking for a handgun for home defense. I suggested that he look at a G19, or G17. Well, his hand was so big it just swallowed up the grip and he couldn't even get his finger in the trigger guard!! Looked like a kids' toy gun in his hand. He's not overweight, or anything, just a big guy. He's got what I call 'ham' hands. His hands are so big, they look like a Christmas ham.
