A Brandspanking new left hip!
On Aug the 26th I had my left hip fixed, it had bothered me for years. This time I got all the farm work done and go the appointment to do it. It took a long time to get here but it finally came to pass. I can tell you it hurts like heck but I hope it will get better as time passes. There are many do's and donts. I have found most of them. I have talked to a lot of folks that have had them done and they seem to turn out right I just hope mine does the same. Any advice that I would have for some one contemplating this is to just go ahead and fix it. The ratio of knees to hips is about 4 to 1 in favor of the knees. Jeff

Go up stairs with the original leg first, go down stairs with the repaired leg first!

The Canadian actor (Michael Sinelnikoff) who played old Prof. Summerlee in the first season of TV's, The Lost World wasn't faking that limp. When the season ended, he went home and had surgery for hip replacement.
He posted on the official fan board that he felt far better with the new hip.
That was in about 2000, maybe in 1999. I'm sure they do an even better job 15 years later.

Got mine six years ago. It was a lifesaver. Dr. said not to run or jump, ever , as it could dislodge.

I had both of mine replaced 20 and 18 years ago (military injuries). I had to have the 20 year old one "revised" this last January (doctorspeak for a worn out joint) I've been told that the newer ones last longer so you've got a long time to go on the new one. All the advice is good, I learned early on not to try and cross your legs (joint popped out and back in, not a pleasant experience , I only did that once.) Walk a lot, the more you build up the muscles, the easier it gets.

My doc says I need one too. The pain is getting to where it keeps me from doing things I want to do and wakes me up at night. Over the counter meds only dull the pain a bit. The doc said he would give me something stronger but I told him I would rather not. Of course he wants me to loose weight.
The thing that concerns me is the recovery time. How long does it take before you can take care of yourself? I understand it can be several weeks with restrictions.

My hospital stay was four days. They get you up and moving around the next day. Painful but gets better. Driving in four weeks, lost cane after about five weeks. Sine they cut a lot of muscle it still gets a little sore from walking a lot, but nothing like the pain before surgery.

That doesn't sound as bad as I thought. Heck, it already hurts like a son of a gun.

I had both of Mine replaced about ten years ago,They are the kind that the Bone grows into instead of the Cemented type(Titanium and Ceramic) and I haven't had a problem since. You just need to follow the Doctors orders for a while and then You will know what You can and cant do.At My age I am done running and climbing trees anyway.
Good Luck.

Had my left replaced seven years ago. Was on crutches the next day, walking with a cane two days after that and got rid of cane in another week. Was very diligent on rehab, pushing the limit. Have not had a problem since.

I've been struggling with a bad left hip for about 5 years now. What's strange is that my hip joint is healthy, but the connective tissues are shot. The only fix may be to have a total hip replacement, which just irks me. As it is, I cannot walk more than about 30 yards (on a good day) without having to stop and rest due to the pain. Cane, crutches, etc. are no help. I am glad you are doing well. I may have to bite the bullet and get my hip done as I'm getting really tired and frustrated with my current problem.
Regards,
Dave

Hip Fix
Thanks to all of you who responded with fine advice I have gotten to where I can move, up and down and out of bed with wifes help. One major problem that came up was I was taking Apriso to control ulcerative cloitus and after not having them for 10 days this came back and has really thrown a monkey wrench in my recovery. Had it done at Mercy in Rogers Ar, doctors and helpers are all first class. Keep up the good work that The Forum does is furnish good work and great advice on these problems. Jeff

Right hip replaced June 2011. Because I live alone the surgeon advised initial rehab start in the SNU. Left hip replaced September 2011 same deal with rehab. In home both times for a couple of weeks and then outpatient.
To the surprise of the attending physicians I used much less morphine than normal. Really I was not that uncomfortable both times.
The surgeon used a drug regimen the day before and while I was directly under his team's care they called TLC. every 12 hours a full dose Tylenol, Lyrica and Celebrex.
