Default STRANGE PEOPLE

I keep reading, here and there, from/about people who are shocked by human actions. They claim there are some strange people out there.
I keep wondering when that light bulb turned on for them.
It is like life is supposed to be a movie---all scripted and edited.
Movies never show a person doing all the stuff humans really do.
People -----ALL PEOPLE---that includes you and me---are strange.
Some are strange on purpose as if that will make them stranger that we really are.
Folks, the only thing about real life is that we survive for over a day.
Blessings

Strange I can handle. But when it comes down to straight toxic/evil like my mother in law, that's when their is a problem.

Strange makes for an interesting world. Imagine several billion "normal" people, how dull.

Define "strange". Without using your own behavior as a gauge.

People have called me weird or strange throughout my life. The only difference between me and them is a relative inability or lack of restraint in filtering what comes out of my mouth hole when provoked.

Folks ask me why I'm generally quiet then wish I'd shut up when I get to talking due to my flat, frank, bluntness.

The extremes of the human psyche is always something interesting, and at times even shocking.

Jim Morrison put it well...

The problem is, a lot of strange people established those norms of society. So you see things just keep getting stranger and stranger and there is no end. Then the strange becomes the new norm, like we have today.

Default An answer to current human behavior

http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2015/09/the-coddling-of-the-american-mind/399356/

This is a long magazine article about political correctness and education. It helped me understand the delicate folks I encounter. People are sheltered from the real world causing them severe distress when reality confronts their ideals. The article also explains why younger people have ZERO problem solving skills. If you don't have the ability to analyze a situation, how can you find a solution?

Most of the folks on the Forum are above 50, so we weren't protected from the real world, but instead played and lived in it.

Some people consider me "strange" because I read books and don't have the slightest interest in sports.

Norms are ever evolving as society changes. We no longer follow Hammurabi's code and would probably be considered pc in his time. Or for something closer to our time...we no longer have segregation. Probably for some people in the 1900 - 1960s this would be pc and not the norm. Society always changes but society isn't perfect

Rick A, thanks for that. When I saw the title of the thread, that is what came into my mind. One of my favorite albums. The CD is in my truck's player right now.
As society evolves, I get stranger every day. Remember that just because something is socially acceptable, doesn't mean it's not wrong.

I am the only normal one.

When I work I am a General Foreman for a couple companies that do projects in oil refineries. I have some "history" in the industry. One of my jobs is to do employee evaluations with the superintendents and human resources people who know me well. We get some odd ducks in the business who are often great workers. "Normal" don't often end up in this line of work. When going over their oddities I often conclude with the statement, but, I am the only normal one. This puts it into perspective. LOL

Another favorite statement I like to use when someone does something odd is "If they always did what they were told they would have never ended up here in the first place."

I always said I would be very qualified to open up a day caree center, having been supervision in the oil industry.

Many of society's greatest inventions and discoveries were made by people that were considered strange by their contempories. Columbus, the Wright Brothers, Galileo , the list is almost endless.

It doesn't matter, there will always be sub groups. Just like there are people who don't believe there should be nudity and cursing on TV and then there are those who don't care. As a society we still move with similar norms. How often do you see someone in a public place just squat and take a dump right there?!?! I'm sure there are a few derps who have done it but as a society our norm is to go to a designated area for that. In the Roman era they had similar designed areas as we do today. Then in the dark ages society changed and it was socially except able to dump your stuff on the street.

That, sir, is a most interesting observation and I think it needs further consideration, if I may...

It seems to me that strange is a relative term. For there to be "strange" then there must be a point of reference or "normal". I can't remember ever seeing or hearing a definition of normal that fully defines it. Who would be qualified to define it. What if someone strange was chosen to define it. That would be strange would it not?

I'm sure that most of us feel like that we're normal and we define strange as behavior or appearance that differs from our own.

Back in the '50s there was a comedian that I thought was one of the best of his time. He had a dry wit and some of his observations were ahead of their time. Profound even. When he wasn't talking about his wife, Alice, he was talking about himself. George "Lonesome George" Gobel used to talk about being strange. One of my favorite of his sayings was, "I feel like the world is a tuxedo and I'm a pair of brown shoes."

Then of course there was Rodney Dangerfield, strange for sure by most any definition. So this is not a new question. It has been pondered since time out of mind. and by some heavy thinkers along the way too.

And with my memory the way it is now a daze I wake up every day and nothing seems familiar. Don't remember leaving the bathroom light on. Don't remember Setting the thermostat. Don't remember locking the garage door. Basically it's a brand new world for me every day. And I find that very strange.

To me Strange is different, but has a connotation of bizarreness and is a negative way to be different.

To me Unique is different, but without the negative connotation that the word strange has.

Of course to some Yankee raised in NYC who never learned to drive and who never actually saw a fire arm, people driving pick up trucks and shooting guns would be strange, whereas to me raised in Texas, the fact that someone could become an adult and not know how to drive or shoot a gun is strange.

Good points and a great article. This illustrates what so many of us were saying back in the day when Political Correctness was being promoted and becoming the norm. It shows the result of the PC movement taken to it's logical extreme. Or more correctly it's ILLOGICAL extreme. The current state of affairs was predicted 30 years ago by those of us who have always been opposed to the PC movement...

I often think I live on the "Island of Misfit Toys" from Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer. Everybody has their issues, disability's or hang ups. Yet somehow we all function together somehow.

This is an excellent article, but it only scratches the surface of the problem and is far too politically correct to discuss the full range of causes of the problems being discussed. Still it is by far the best general article I have read on the subject, as most mass media refuse to even admit such behavioral changes are a problem.

Also I like the mention of the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy, which is a general way of saying Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy, something I wrote about last week on this site.

Thanks for the link.

I believe strange is the norm.
People who create mayhem are just acting out their norm.
You cannot educate strange out of people.

You think people at Walmart are strange, look at some of the people we put in a house on Pennsylvania Ave.

I had the pleasure of being in line at a WM the other day.

The dingbat two people ahead was trying to show the gal behind her how enlightened she was. It was pretty pitiful.

All I could think was,

And they vote.

The dingbat two people ahead
My problem with the dingbat two people ahead is that their credit/debit/gift/fake card doesn't work. After having an overflowing basket rung up.

The idea of norm is stranger than the idea of strange.
There will ALWAYS be the controllers amongst us.
Now what do you do with the dangerous strange ?
Same thing that has been done with them forever.
But--normal is not the answer.
Blessings

+1. I too have absolutely no interest in sports. I learned long ago that if you watch the game on TV, you have absolutely no affect on the score. Go do something worth while like read a good book instead of wasting the hours sitting in front of the TV. If you want know the final score, read it the next day in the newspaper!

Not too far O/T I hope, but would like to take bets on what year people will remark "Remember when everyone was getting tattoos?"

Dang! You must have been in the same line. Not only that, she forgot to remove a 27 cent item from her cart and had to dig through her purse for loose change all the while spewing her liberal views to show the world how enlightened she was.
