Side effects are always fun to hear about. I understand why it happens and how that works and I can see some medication giving certain other problems. It's a physical thing. The chemicals the effect one part one way can have a different effect on a different part. What gets me though is the side effects for restless leg syndrome. ......are you ready for it?

I think Lowes’ or Home Depot one has a new electric toilet plunger that might work. It is guaranteed to unplug any stopped up drain pipe up to and including 3 inches in diameter. It claims that its 2 horse power engine can provide up to 175 pounds of suction if plugged in to a 220 volt outlet. While it is not specifically designed for human use, I think it might just be the ticket for this serious medical condition.

That particular side effect of opium and derivatives has been known for a long time. Back in the Old West, when laudanum was the cure all, it was taken to cure diaherea.

Today, opiate constipation is common as a side effect with a number of pain killers. It can be a real problem for the elderly. Ask any LPN who has worked in an old folks home about the joys of a "manual extraction".

A trip to Mexico would cure that problem.

This is what I don't understand about the recreational usage of painkillers like Hydrocodone 10. I have a prescription and take one tablet now and again if my pain level gets too high to bear. It, in turn, makes me soooo constipated, I can barely tolerate it. The good effects just barely outweigh the bad. How anyone would take one or more of these for 'fun' I just can't understand. You must not like yourself very much to do so, and consider constipation to be just an 'occupational' hazard.

This thread has cleared up one thing for me at least (pun intended). I could never understand how all those California movie stars and big wigs spent big bucks to get what is euphemistically call a high colonic. You can get them flavored such as a coffee high colonic or a strawberry high colonic or herbal high colonic. These are preformed at fancy & expensive salons

I kept wondering how on earth so many supposedly intelligent people could spend so much money on a fancy enema. Could there be that many freaks in California that actually enjoyed the so-call high colonic? It was mind boggling to think that a small industry based on such a thing existed and flourished, even in California.

However, given the information about this particular side effect of heroin and pain killers, the amazing success of the high colonic salons begins to make a little more sense.

For those not familiar with high colonics they are defined as “High colonics or colonic irrigation consists of flushing large amounts of fluid through a tube into the large bowel. Sometimes 25 gallons of fluid may be required to clear the colon of stool. These fluids can contain a variety of ingredients including herbs, coffee, vitamins, and enzymes.

Mexico street food could be the solution to many of these side effects.
As a remedy to constipation, nothing this side of India beats it. And as a follow up, the icecream man can help out when things get "hot". I came down with a neurological disorder this spring. One early side effect was 9 days of no go. I quart of hot prune juice couldn't break it loose. I won't go further into it.

I am in total agreement with your statement. I have had four surgeries and was prescribed Hydrocodone for post surgery pain management. The Hydrocodone took the edge off of the pain but it did not do anything else for me other than to make me constipated. I stopped taking the Hydrocodone as soon as possible which was generally a week to 10 days.

I have had 2 knee replacements and I have also passed a couple of kidney stones. The pain killers did cause me to have constipation. The stronger pills put me to sleep so I did not take them any longer than I had to.

I am curious about why Caje is focused on the ability to poop.

ALL meds come with side affects, including death... The one that scares me the most is anal leakage......really !!!

I learned about this side effect of narcotics when I blew up my knee a couple of years ago.

After a week or so of 10mg Hydrocodone every couple of hours I had a world-class case of constipation.

Just a couple of days of taking regular doses of Phillips stool softeners did the trick for me. I was on the narcotics for a couple of months - gradually decreasing the dosage or increasing the intervals to "wean" myself off them.

As the narcotics tapered off, so did the need for the little red & white Phillips pills...

People who are serious about abusing opiates do not care about this particular side effect.

This is a well known side effect, and a doctor who prescribes opioids (which IIRC now are mostly synthetic) should also be prescribing meds to address the risk of constipation. When my wife had her back surgery two years ago, she had both scrips, and pretty clear directions about the stool softeners etc.

I think this was a contributing factor to the death of Mr. Presley.
