I got one about two weeks ago that took a little over five months.

That estimate is accurate. There was a post on the forum last week on this subject.
While I am sure that the delay is frustrating, I can personally vouch for the fact that it's well worth the wait. Roy Jinks is a dedicated professional and he always returns a document to us that is well worth the cost, and the wait.
For older firearms, I'm not sure that the records were written on stone tablets, but the required documentation can't always be on his hard drive!

I believe that they have finally arranged to get Roy some help and with two people doing letters, the backlog should start to get smaller.

That would be really good news, not just in terms of the backlog, but for Roy. I always found it odd that he apparently didn't even get any clerical help so he had to hand-address the return envelopes himself.

I have been waiting a hair over 5 months for my most recent request. Good to know it won't be too much longer.
Earlier this year it took 4.5 months.
Glad to read (if true) he has more help.
