Added a cabin to my mountain rifle range (pics)....
Just finished having a small one room cabin built on my mountain property and rifle range. A one room, 26 X 14 structure with a front porch. A dry cabin with no water or electricity, exterior is finished but I have to finish out the inside.
Here's a pic of the building site, about a year ago when I started clearing the property. The white blob is an old picnic table that was left there by the previous owner. Quite a view, don't you think?:
[img] [/img]
The property is not far from Marion, Viginia. It borders the Jefferson National Forest, The mountains you see are National Forest Property, The Appalachian Trail runs on top of the mountain on the left, less than three miles from our house.
The completed cabin, I have since added front porch rails. The chair is the wife's:
[img] [/img]
A view from the back of the cabin looking down the valley. Pic taken at the 50 yard mark of my rifle range, we have a total of 220 yards to shoot, it is about 125 yards from the cabin to the back stop:
[img] [/img]
The cabin was completed September 3, I have since added a laminate floor, wood stove, chimney and pipe, and a small back door stoop. Still have to add insulation and paneling. That will have to be done in small steps as I have run out of money for this project, but it will do for now.

[img] [/img]
[img] [/img]
[img] [/img]
The cabin will be used for hunting, shooting and as a guest house for visitors. I may even put a small reloading bench in there. Still have to add a covered shooting position and shooting bench outside the cabin.
The wife loves it, she'd rather sleep in the cabin on a futon, no air conditioning or internet than she would in the house. She likes it that she is free from phone, e-mail, neighbors or any other distraction, just you and the deer and turkeys.....

Gorgeous view and a cute cabin! Looks like the perfect spot to hang out, relax, and do some good shooting. Looks like your dog likes it too. :-)

What's not to like!!!!! Another member suggested an "Aladdin lamp" to me. You might want to have a look at them for your cabin. They are a kerosene lamp but have a silk mantle above the flame and glow very bright...no pressure, no constant hiss like a Coleman, just the bright glowing mantle. A lto more light and they do put out a fair amount of heat too. Google "Lehman's" and their website will come up if interested.

Watch out, that might start inviting tourists. Before you know it you'll end up with neighbors and a gated neighborhood next door
Actually what you've done is really awesome. I hope to do something like that someday and have a place to get away from everything.

Sweeeeeet.........
Not a criticism...... but I would have gone with a free standing Franklin Stove.... to give a fireplace look/option.
We have one with bi-fold doors in the main room of our cabin just north of you and the Mason/Dixon Line .......( also a second like yours on the lower level) I think a FS would throw enough heat to heat 364 sq ft room.
Smart move to have it 2-3ft into the space..........we did 4x4 brick walls behind ours.
If you are considering any electric..... check out Honda's Invertor Generators.......good "quit" power.......not cheap but worth it....2 or 3 circuits 3000-4000 watts.....

Nice cabin and location. Have you given any thought to hanging a game camera or two to identify any unwanted trespassers? Hate to even bring that up, but it seems someone is always out there to take advantage.

Looks like you have the same cooking setup we have in our farm house. I ditched the one pound cans and got a twenty pound BBQ grill tank with propane hose. MUCH cheaper to operate and last 20X longer.
As stated above, invest in a few trail cams. I've got about 24 hanging in the woods on our 640 and another 12 around the house and barns. We've had several folks prosecuted for trespassing.

I agree with msinc about the alladin lamp. Throws quite a bit of light and is easy to use. I have one for power outages and am real happy with it. Looks like a real nice cabin and I'm jealous of you. Enjoy it.

I have thought about trail cameras, not so much for trespassers but for game. The property is pretty well set up to keep out trespassers, the only vehicle access is my driveway, and you would have to drive right past the house to get up the hill to the cabin.
The terrain on adjoining property and National Forest land is steep and brushy, you would have to work hard to hike into it, wouldn't put it past a determined person, but most trespassers are lazy I would bet.
Lighting options are still being sorted out, right now it is oil lamps, kerosene lanterns, battery lanterns and Coleman lantern. We will upgrade to an Alladin pressurized lantern or something similar. Also, solar power with battery and inverter in the future.
Water catchment from the roof to provide for a shower house....
Outhouse....
Shooting shed....
Patio and BBQ.....
It never ends, but it's fun doing it.

You're coming along great with the property since you bought it. Was looking for someplace to visit when I retire. Has to be great being in the middle of no-where. That's great that your wife likes the cabin, does she have a sister???? Enjoy the pease, Larry

Great cabin and super views. I have been going to our family cabin in Maine since I was 13. No electricity, outhouse that I dug at age 14, Coleman lanterns using fuel or propane, kerosene lamps and some Petromax (sp?) lamps that are permanently mounted to the walls and connected to an outside propane bottle using 3/8" copper tubing.
No phones, no internet and no cable TV. Lots of cards, ship captains crew and a few adult beverages to pass the time.
Love it. Enjoy and take your time outfitting the cabin. As you live there you will figure out what is needed.

They are definitely quiet...mine is 6500 and you are right, they are not cheap. I also got the remote start switch and have it on the wall inside my cabin. Nice to hit a button when you need power and not have to go outside and juke on a string. You can stand beside this generator and have a conversation while it is running...no louder than a car idling.

Not too many trespassers in this neck of the woods...the fines are high and there is so much public land that nobody really has to trespass, unless of course they are up to no good.
I sometimes wish I had built a cistern for water instead of the 900 ft deep $23,000.00 well I had drilled. The first year I had it the water had so much iron it looked like tea!! It has cleared up now and is good but I could have had a nice setup with money left over if I did a cistern.

I have a similar set up north of you near Amherst, but not with the view you have!
You'll enjoy that immensely! Must be beautiful with a fresh snowfall on the mountains.
I insulated and installed solar, so if you have any questions feel free to ask me.

Nice cabin and view. That's finer than frog's hair. The gentle breezes of Wyoming would blow that rascal right off of them stilts.
