Default WHAT A QUEER SITUATION

About two months ago I started getting a pain in my left pinky--bout like you get when you have a hang-nail and about in the same location.
I did a little elective surgery on it with my knife---to no avail or relief.
Then it turned red and showed infection.
I went to the Dr. and she prescribed some antibiotics.
Took these for a week and it still looked infected.
I went back to her yesterday and she looked at it--sent me for an x-ray--stuck a knife into the cuticle to see if she could drain it--took some of the stuff she got out for a culture--gave me some more meds and said to make appointment in about a week.
Then this morning SHE called ma and said she had talked to a hand specialist--sent him the x-rays and he said there was an infection in the bone.
Now I have to go to him on Tuesday.
Queer !? I have never heard of an infection in a bone.
Blessings

Several years ago I had a similar infection in the first joint of my "trigger" finger. It was so painful that I couldn't even sleep. After it started to eat the joint away, I wound up in the hospital. They put me under and had to cut the finger open and flush it out with antiseptic. The Dr. said that when infection gets into the bone, it is very hard for antibiotic to work well because of low blood flow.

I have not had one but I have had animals; a horse and my best breeding buck with leg bone infections. Neither was from any discernible cause like an injury. They are deeply embedded and hard to kick. Don't screw around with it. Good luck

Yes. I had one 20 years ago when I broke my leg and got the infection from the metal stuff they screwed in my bone. Had to get all that stuff taken back out.
The infection itself really weakened me, kind of like having the flu.

Have seen many cases of bone infection during my career. Nothing to sneer at. Take it seriously.

A prayer for your complete healing.

Default Yes, a co-worker got a bone infection from a briar

Actually, from using his Barlow pocket knife to remove a briar from his ring finger. He slipped and stuck his middle finger and infected it as well. A month later, he had undergone two out patient surgeries on those two fingers to have the bones scraped clean. It was not pretty. He also had to get his wedding band cut off when his knuckle swelled up. A bone infection is serious business, good luck to you with this.

A pocket knife is not a surgical instrument either.

Maybe you should not have performed that do it yourself surgery....Lack of sterile instruments and surroundings likely introduced an infection.

Yep, last year I lost half my right foot to a bone infection, it was diagnosed as Osteomyelitis, (think I spelled it right) mine started as an ulcer in the bottom of my big toe, Dr amputated half the toe, ulcer came back within six months, amputated the other half and it seemed to be OK, about another three months, and my second toe appeared to be moving toward the missing for, Dr said "I can fix that" , but before he did anymore surgery he did a bone biopsy and discovered the Osteo, result from that was a "trans metatarsal" which basically means that they cut your foot off and, (I think)
about half way the first toe bones,(the ones that are first from your foot and not the exposed toes), and, in my case, this resulted in about 8 weeks, lying flat on my back with IV antibiotics going 24 hours a day, to kill the Osteo.
Long explanation to say that a bone infection is not a trivial matter, keep up the Dr visits and keep aware of the progress of your healing. Don't hesitate to contact your Dr before your next appointment, if you don't feel that it is responding to the treatment, better safe than sorry.
There is a plus side for me though, I usually get a 59% discount on pedicures.

I've heard about this maybe twice in my life and it's not a good place to have an infection. It's called Osteomyelitis. The doc was smart to get a culture so she could prescribe the right antibiotic. Often it's a staph infection and can be really nasty and hard to cure.

Well now---I did appreciate the humor--but I also appreciate those who have had experience, either personal or close to home, about what is going on.
I am taking it seriously---I also wonder how i have lived this long, to begin with.

Hi William Layton:

Glad to hear you are recovering from your ordeal. From your description, it sounds like you suffered what is known as a paronychia of your left 5th toe. The infection was probably already present - hence your discomfort - and your elective surgery probably exacerbated the situation and drove the infection deeper into the tissues of your toe. As you have discovered, these infections are uncomfortable, and can become serious in a short amount of time:

Paronychia Guide: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment Options

Paronychial infections are nothing to play around with.

Best of luck,

Dave

DO NOT TAKE THIS LIGHTLY!!!!!!!
My father had a hand injury in the late '40's that required wiring one finger and part of his hand together. 50 years later, he bumped his hand on his gun cabinet. He started noticing some swelling and discomfort, and after 2 weeks, agreed to go to the Dr. They started antibiotics, and we went all the way to them flaying his hand open and leaving it for a month. 5 months and 2 days later we buried him.
TREAT THIS SERIOUSLY!!!!!

Unfortunately I am familiar with bone infections. My Father was seriously wounded by German artillery during WW II. Among his many injuries was a piece of shrapnel in his right shin bone. All his other wounds healed just fine, but that shin injury turned into a recurring bone infection. Several times during my youth he had to be hospitalized for weeks at a time on massive antibiotics to knock the infection down. But it always came back after a couple of years.
In 1970 the doctors finally told him that he needed to make a choice. They could remove the lower half of his leg now while he was healthy enough to recover with minimal problems or he could wait until they had no choice but to remove it. He chose to do it then.
On a positive note: he was glad he made that decision. He lived a long and active life with his prosthetic leg and he never let it slow him down.
Medicine has improved greatly since then. But a bone infection is still nothing to mess around with. Get it taken care of now!

The test results from the sample taken from the FINGER shows no bacterial growth.
I have no idea what this means.
It feels like I am in a scene of "Days of My Life" and waiting to see the hand dr is in the next days drama.

Always sterilize your pocket knife with a flame before surgery.

Never use a lead bullet to grip in your teeth, always use FMJ or a clean sock.

Pour a little whiskey on the wound when you are finished. Drink the rest.

You need a bottle of my ”Dr. Blum’s Magic Elixir”. I sell it for $25 a pint bottle. You can drink it or you can use it like liniment, or you can soak you finger in it. I even had one patient buy several bottles and he used it to soak his head. This stuff cures bad breath, headaches, kidney stones, upset stomach, aches, pains, and infections like yours. Just send $25 in cash to the address listed below and get fast relief in a bottle. Guaranteed to make you feel better.
