October the Month For Horror Movies
The wife is partial to horror movies and we actually watch a few together this time of year. I like all the Steven King Movies especially IT, In addition to the black and white classics: Dracula, The Invisible Man, Frankenstein, The Mummy and anything with Vincent Price (Even the silly version of the Raven with Peter Lorre). What are your favorite horror movies? Thank you!

Maybe you could watch the news or MSNBC opinion programs. I grew up on classic horror films such as Mummy, Wolfman, I like Boris Karloff and Lon Chaney Jr. I did enjoy the Shining but refuse to watch the gore fests.

The 1930's horror flicks do it for me. They had me looking under the bed in the mid-fifty's.

AMC and Syfy are both doing big horror movie festivals this month. Yeah, a lot of it is just blood and gore junk, but there are some great movies to be seen.
Just the other night AMC showed the original 1963 version of "The Haunting". My all time favorite ghost story. No blood, no gore, no fancy special effects. They do it all with lights, sound and the power of your own imagination. Even after all these years, it'll still scare the snot out of ya.
Got my DVR all ready to go.

Ash vs. The Evil Dead premiers Halloween night on Starz. Bruce Campbell returns with boomstick in hand.
I have seen the 51 and 82 "The Thing" untold times...the later prequel slash remake just once.
I watch a lot of zombie films, but when you have a lot of ammunition, they are not so scary. Neither are serial killer or slasher films.

I don't mind horror movies per se, but I hate slasher flicks like those insane Jason/Friday 13 the movies. It ticks me off to see an idiot wearing a hockey mask. That said, I love, The Wolf man w/ Lon Chaney Jr, the Frankenstein movies, the older mummy flicks, and movies which had Ray Harryhausen employed making them,

I have mentioned in other posts my "Phantom Restaurant". In response to requests, I am doing one on Halloween (actually the next day so we don't have any pesky kids after myyyyyy precioussssss......). I have had a request for "Thirty Days of Night" from one of the diners and our previous meal/movies were the Penny Dreadful series from Showtime, so we will be finishing that up. Followed of course by The Walking Dead.
As always with the Phantom Restaurant series, the cuisine is a secret but I did say that it would be based on the Donner Party!
For those of you unfamiliar with the Phantom Restaurant idea, I love to cook. So, about six months ago, we invited the local women's writers group (and spouses) over for dinner. I greeted them at the door with a printed menu and served them a meal, totally home made, from "soup to nuts!". Since then, we have then sporadically, each with a different cuisine.
The first one was on my 65th birthday and I had previously challenged each of them to do a Gothic story, in their favorite genre, as a birthday present for me. I got a poem, a sci-fi novella, and an historical ghost story/novella, all Gothic in nature. Two went on to be published!
We became the Phantom Restaurant when one of the girls wrote a blog about the "fantastic new Mexican restaurant in town" and someone called her for the phone number since it was "reservations only".
PS: My favorite is "Arsenic and Old Lace".

I like a lot of the old, "campy" stuff from the 50s but I also like some of the newer stuff. Stephen Kings books and short stories can be turned into some great movies...or they can be made into real stinkers. I still think one of his best books and subsequently best movies was his first. SALEM'S LOT
The Stand, Misery, The Shining....
One type I DON'T like is the para normal stuff. I'll stick to the rubber monster movies thanks all the same.

Most horror movies are just dull to me, but if you haven't watched "The Ring", do so ,but not alone.

I wouldn't mind seeing some of the 1960's AIP adaptations of
Edgar Allen Poe tales just to see how they have held up.

I like a lot of Steven King stuff... as of late I've been fond of the Mist movie, took years for me to get around to seeing it.
Of course, can't forget the zombie movies. I've always liked Return of the Living Dead...fun, campy B movie goodness.

Agree on The Ring. That chick crawlin through the TV was a new twist!! I recall 13 Ghosts as a kid where they passed out 3-D glasses!! Used to see 2 or 3 horror flicks for 50 cents in the afternoon. Kinda scary what it costs today!!

As i sit here this evening staring at my The Twilight Zone DVD collection, I reflect on watching every one of these. Beginning October 2nd ,1959 and ending June 19, 1964 (all 156 episodes). These are better than all of the horror pictures put together! (Only because some of them could really happen)!

For some obvious reasons I liked the original The Fog the one with Adrienne Barbeau. Don't care for slasher movies and grew up with 30's horror flicks. Have never cared for Steven King stuff. My preference in off the wall movies is Sci-Fi...well good Sci-Fi. And I saw an advertisement tonight for the movie Red being shown tomorrow evening. Not horror but a neat off the wall one that was kinda fun.

Night of the Living Dead (1968), Poltergeist, and World War Z come to mind. Signs was one of the scariest movies I ever saw, but is it really "horror"? All the others I thought of and started to list are more properly classified as "science fiction", so are disqualified.
And, it's the FORTIETH anniversary of the release of The Rocky Horror Picture Show (WHATEVER you'd classify it as) ..... How did I ever get to be this old?

Good living good whiskey and holding year mouth right? only thing I can think of. When I was a kid I just couldn't imagine living to the year 2000. Boy..that time flew on by. Sci-Fi can be horror movies too. Alien was a bit scary for me..and Arnie's movies Like Predator and the Terminator series were also types of horror flicks too... and don't forget Jaws. Scared the Crapo out of a lot of people!

"Motel Hell" and "Don't Look In The Basement"
"Motel Hell" with Rory Calhoun made about 1980. People come from miles around to buy his special sausage! Another good one was "Don't Look In The Basement." Also "When A Stranger Calls" made in 2006. Check them out!

Narrative stories of true "ghouls" are always truly frightening! If you have the opportunity, watch William Forsythe in the titular tole of the 2010 reality-based, Warner Brother's horror film "Dear Mr. Gacy".
It is a dramatization of how a young man gained the confidence of the serial killer John Wayne Gacy. This horrifying motion picture that delves deeply into the insidiously evil mindset of this brutally sadistic and savage murderer.
"Want to see something really scary?
WATCH THAT!

Never mind the horror movies. Just watch the political debates. They will send shivers up your spine.

I agree, Walkin' Jack; Salem's Lot was King's best movie. It was the first vampire film that used contact lenses and realistic vampire teeth. I was only about 7 when I saw the movie, thanks to my sister (11 years older) who took me to see it so she could hang with her friends. That movie scared me for a good 10 years. Every time I heard a branch scrape a window in the wind, I would imagine a vampire scratching the window asking to be let in with their glowing eyes.

That could have been my sister-in-law; 4' 11 1/2" tall and 385 lbs. on her wedding day (true story). On their wedding night, her husband caried her over the threshold... it took two trips!

I have always had a hard time with horror movies, mostly because I have a tendency to laugh through them, it could be because my parents when I was a kid growing up ignored the whole "R" thing and let me watch whatever as a kid. I remember very well watching The Thing, Friday the 13th and other movies when I was 6 or 7 years old, I didn't get nightmares then either. The new stuff, well its not that scary but there are some really good movies.
I love American Werewolf in London, one of the best, they don't need to remake it, it's a classic. The Omen was ok, little boring, I still laugh when the priest gets turned into a lawn ornament by the falling lightning rod. Sorry, can't help it.
There is one movie that I remember when I was a kid, and I cannot recall for the life of me the name of it. I just remember at the end the survivors were on a helicopter flying from where ever they were and something reaches out from hiding and grabs one, can't remember the rest of the film, had to be a 70's or early 80's movie.
To me, there are few actors that can pull off a scary movie like the older actors did, they didn't have CGI or a lot of special effects, it was acting. I remember watching Vincent Price and Christopher Lee, two of my favorite actors, Bela Lugosi is still the best Dracula, Boris Karloff was incredible. Anthony Hopkins and maybe a few other actors have the talent to BE scary, not just in a movie that is scary.
