You never know how things will turn out. I worked with a guy who had several nice rifles and shotguns he bought in the 1950's. He decided to give a nice Browning shotgun to one son and a Winchester bolt action rifle to the other, so they would not have to wait to enjoy these fine firearms.
He told me that within a month, both had been sold to pay bills.

I don't want to cause trouble here or get folks angry, but I think there may have been a reason for your mother getting rid of the Garand. You said many times that you would "sneak" in and get the Garand out. Perhaps your parents were aware of this and thought the gun was an unsafe item. Kids sneaking around getting their parents firearms out is a leading cause of accidental shootings. Perhaps she thought she was protecting you. Just a thought.

To that end, I get my enjoyment sharing my shooting hobby with interested people while I am still alive. I have introduced several friends and family to shooting, and it becomes a fun and memorable event.

I am sure they never knew I had handled it. It was wrapped in cloth at the back of their closet where it probably went unnoticed by them for decades. And pop never brought any ammo home. Shooting was just something he tried once and lost interest in.

I thought I would care for that friend in retirement, but now I hope whoever gave it a home, treats it well.

A friend of mine died last week in his sleep from a heart attack. He was 57. He never made out a will. He owns "about 50 or 60" guns and a lot of tools, vehicles, and other equipment, and was half owner with his sister of a small farm. The in-fighting has already begun with his kids over who gets what (so the can sell it; none has any interest in firearms or tools or farming).
I am going there with his sister tomorrow to start clearing out some of the guns. She has asked me to help sell them.
People, no matter what age you are, GET A WILL MADE. No one knows what tomorrow might bring.

In my case it wasn't a gun but equally frustrating to me. When I was a kid I spent a lot of the money I earned and received as gifts on model trains. I guess you could call me a fanatic at the time. Over time I had a very impressive setup. The setup was up for a long time and, when I moved out of the house I dismantled the entire set and boxed everything up and stored it in the basement. Some time later, when I went to get it, I found out that my mother decided to sell it. I never asked her what she got for it but I did let her know that I was very disappointed that she would do that with my stuff. I've gotten over it though.
In another case, I had an aunt and uncle that we were very close to. My uncle had a very old shotgun that he used hunting (never managed to shoot a thing). He passed away and the shotgun sat in the attic for a few years. It just happened that I was visiting my aunt when the topic of the shotgun came up. I checked it and found it loaded so I emptied the gun. She said something about giving it to a neighbor. I stopped her and said I thought my uncle would want it kept in the family. I managed to keep that.

Another post by me. Some posts have said a gun owner should get a will made up stating who guns should go to. I'd like my son to get mine however, he lives in a state that has very strict gun laws. What do you do then?

Please tell us what you know about old folks homes in the state of Mississippi.

Simple law of averages.
Out of all of the old folks homes in Mississippi, there has to be a worst one.
Do you know what they call the doctor that graduates at the bottom of his class?
"Doctor"

My eldest granddaughter who is the only family member showing any firearms interest, lives on LI NY. She has passed whatever local requirement there is to own a handgun. She already has a shotgun for skeet. There were some hoops to jump through, but she completed the process with the help of her father, who is an NYPD detective. She gets my modest collection.
