Police K9 Killed
It is always a terrible when this happens. I wish the killer would get more than 1-5 years! My hometown just received bullet proof vests, at a cost of $1050 each, for their K9's a couple of months ago. I saw where the Anderson department has vests for their dogs too, but only use them in certain situations because "they are heavy and hot". I wish they used them all the time! It is said to cost $14000 to replace the trained dog.

Recently here, a deputy from a neighboring county was fired and charges against him were filed. In the middle of summer, no windows down, car not running to give the dog any cool air. Somehow managed to ''forget '' his dog was in the car for several hours. Sad thing is dog died a horrible needless death due to that deputy ''forgetting'' about the dog. HOW can you forget that!!????
Anyway, said deputy is being charged and may see some jail time.

I don't know because people have done the same thing to their kids and I would wonder how do you forget you have a family member in the vehicle. I am including dogs as family members because that's what mine is.
But just suppose for a minute that there was a legitimate reason for forgetting and then you suddenly remembered only to find it was too late.
The guilt would have to be enormous.

Having no kids of mine yet, I can't fathom how people forget their kids in a car either? There is NO excuse.
Two babies died here recently, due to being stuck in a hot locked car. One parent was at work all day, forgetting the baby was in the car.
No excuse on the deputy's part. He claimed he simply forgot. If I had a dog with me? there is no way I'd be too preoccupied to forget.

This reminds me of a sad event that happened in San Antonio a couple weeks ago. A man shot and killed his wife with a shotgun claiming she was an unidentified intruder. In the dark and even with my poor vision, I would be able to know if she were my wife or not? Having no married experience of my own, I've had a few ladies sleep over. I KNOW their sounds and movements enough to know who they are even if i cant see them. I believe there is much more to that sad story than meets the eye. I'll almost bet this will eventually be a segment on Forensic Files in the future.
IF this was a legit mistake? I couldn't live with myself for killing my wife.

Just saw where all suspects are now in custody! They also said that a bullet proof vest would not have saved the dog in this case.

I hope the dog is buried with the full honors accorded to any fallen officer.
He was a cop who died doing his job. He should be honored accordingly.

I know this is not gonna be popular... but I disagree that a dog, used as a tool... is any more than a dog used as a tool.
It is not to be elevated to human level. 'Specially as a "Law Officer"... what? Look... I hang out in upper Beale Street... it's Indian country. This is one of the very things that them folks equate. Is there anybody here... that understands what I am talkin' 'bout? Anybody?
Sorry...
Man has dominion over all of earth... includin' its animals. And you can't convince me otherwise.
Now... I am sorry the dog is dead. But if a perp shot my gun... disabling it... should my gun be elevated to heaven status? Just a question.
C'mon please... detrina... Chattanooga... help me out here... these folks ain't gonna like this answer. Please protect me from the slings and arrows... from the folks that I love. (Including you Chattanooga... who I also greatly mourned the loss of your magnificent pet and friend. RIP)

I love dogs, But a dog is a dog. I don't pray for dogs, I pray for the family that has been affected.
Dogs are awesome companions, they love us unconditionally. A lot of times they put themselves in harms way. We train them to do that.
I love you guys and gals more. Hate to see a human get hurt or killed.

Ill to no one.
Any type service dog is special. It has to be intelligent and have the discipline to do the job it was trained for, and do it well. A police dog is as well trained as any officer. The "scum" that shot the dog would probably have shot at any other officer closing in on him. Should be punished just as severely, in my opinion. Normally, a dog is just a dog unless he has been my buddy for several years, then someone hurting him when doing something I had him do would only warrant maybe getting a toe shot off and a well deserved beating. As for anyone forgetting anything in a vehicle and it dying, I just hope they remember it for the rest of their life. That would be good justice. Have a nice day and be safe.

A few months ago here in Oklahoma City a K-9 was killed by a man with a knife and the dogs police handler then shot and killed the man. I stopped for the funeral procession and it was huge with LE vehicles from all over the place. The funeral was on the news and it was also huge with big beautiful flower arrangements and decorations but it was just kind of weird seeing a funeral and an open casket with a German Shepherd's head sticking out of it.

Then, my friend... you can only believe that...
A boy=dog=rat=monkey=turtle=gopher=ants, etc, etc, etc.
Whatever makes you happy. But whatever you do...be careful where you step.... would not want any conceit to get in the way of your progress forward and/or footfalls. Have a good life.

Yes, this dog was a tool. But it was trained to do a job, at times a very high risk job, that many times keeps its handler from harm. They will protect their handler at all costs. On tonights news, it is being reported that the suspects fired multiple shots at the dog's handler. Unlike their human counterparts, they are sent after dangerous (armed) individuals without the benefit of a gun. Here is a couple examples:
Police dog saves partner
LiveLeak.com - Police Dog Saves Officers Life
They are more like another deputy than a tool to the police. Just ask them.

From an officer's point of view, that was a partner. While I am not a K-9 officer, the dogs have been just as valuable, if not more so, than some humans, on more than one occasion when I was on patrol.
Prayers for all affected by this tragedy, and includes my K-9 brother in arms.

The Good Book does have a few things to say about our animals.
Whoever is righteous has regard for the life of his beast, but the mercy of the wicked is cruel.
He will tend his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms; he will carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with young.
Know well the condition of your flocks, and give attention to your herds,
And he said to them, “Which of you, having a son or an ox that has fallen into a well on a Sabbath day, will not immediately pull him out?”
So he told them this parable: “What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country, and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.’
As a shepherd seeks out his flock when he is among his sheep that have been scattered, so will I seek out my sheep, and I will rescue them from all places where they have been scattered on a day of clouds and thick darkness.
A good dog is a great gift from God. I believe HE created them just for us.

Everybody is entitled to their opinion and if it is different they shouldn't be criticized for it.
My allegiance is on the side of the K9 being more than just a tool. The reason is that I am part of a non-profit that raises money to assist retired K9s from law enforcement and military service. Almost always the city or US government does not provide financial assistance once the K9 is retired.
One of the members of this group is a current K9 handler for a local PD. His first K9 partner had to be retired because of back problems brought on by service and training. Unfortunately it became so expensive the officer had to make a decision to euthanize the dog rather than keep spending money he didn't have. Thus we started the non-profit to provide assistance to retired dogs.
My stepson is a bomb and drug sniffing dog trainer for law enforcement now but worked for a company that provided dogs to the military and he spent time in Iraq with his dogs. He does look at the dog as a tool but also considers them to be caring, loving and breathing as well. He bought one of the dogs he had trained that was being retired and was facing euthanization. Instead the dog now lives with him and his wife as a family pet, albeit a very dangerous one to bad guys.
My friend that is currently a K9 handler (and helped start the non-profit) tells many stories of how the dog has saved his life. One story was about an arrest he made that while handcuffing the suspect he was told something rather chilling....to me anyway. The suspect admitted that because he heard the dog barking in the back of the squad he didn't pull out the hidden pistol he had on himself and shoot the officer. He was more afraid of the dog than the officer.
So I agree with the OP and think they deserve special recognition as does a few organizations across the US that honor fallen military and law enforcement K9s.
