Default How to download music

Once in awhile a forum member posts a link to some great music, related to a particular thread. I listen to it and wish I could somehow capture it on a memory stick. Is that possible? Do I download/upload it to my computer first, and then to a memory stick? I'm using Win7 and Google Chrome.

A related question is, Are there sites available to download free tunes, such as itunes, youtube....................and how do I do that? I've tried and haven't been able to figure it out.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Dave

There are programs to download music from Youtube videos. You might search that. I haven't downloaded any tunes since the old free Napster days.

It's best to get yourself an iTunes account, which I believe is free still to just get the account. From there you can borrow CD's, or use your own, and transfer the songs you want from the CD onto your iTunes. It's literally very ridiculously simple and self explanatory. Trust me, if I can handle it without assistance anyone can.

You can also google a youTube to MP3 converter site to convert songs on youtube to MP3 iTunes content. These are self explanatory as well and must be pretty simple if I can handle it!!

I have used this site on occasion...just type in the name of the song, or the artist in the search window and anything they have on file will show up. You can listen to it and if interested can download to your computer or to mem. stick. I have pretty good virus protection, but have never had anything from this site show as bad. FWIW

Pete

Do a search for mp3skulls

Ahh yes... Napster + dialup!

Don't recall the name but post Napster I used a site that would automatically switch from source to source.

Last time I downloaded Bit Torrent was the rage. Ridiculously fast. Is Pirate Bay even still around?

Lots of music can be downloaded free from YouTube as audio MP3 files, but special conversion software is necessary to do it. You can google to find such software. However, a warning - that software may contain adware, spyware, and/or virus, so be very careful if you attempt it. Some YouTube music is blocked from downloading, even with the conversion software. It would be safer to download what you want for 99 cents per song from one of the other sites. Ask some 13 year-old kid - they know all the tricks.

Default There are many ways to skin that cat.....

It's good to have an account with a big operation. I have Itunes but nowadays like Amazon or sites that just let me download .mp3 without having to translate them out of the program much better. Today I'm completely legit, but I do capture things like old opera performances that are out there on Youtube and such that nobody is trying to make money off of.

You can loopback from output to input on the computer. You can go simple or introduce some hardware into the line. I use a mixer so I can monitor through headphones.

Get Audacity and there is a way to set up that to record what's coming from the sound card.

These methods can compromise sound quality even more than the compromises already in the mp3 format. If I get an mp3 I try to get the highest sampling rate. My old rock and roll songs that I listened to on AM radio, I'm not as picky about. But classical/opera I like a full sound file instead of compressed like an mp3.

A lot of classical music can be found for free but my first effort is to put money into a performance that I like.

So much can be found on the computer nowadays that I don't feel inclined to

I download my music from the radio directly to me ears. No interest in gathering and keeping copies of music. I have enough stuff already.

Probably the best way to expand your digital music library is to have family and friends. People have gazillions of CDs in boxes just waiting to be ripped onto your computer. Or, a lot of folks already have ripped them to their computer and they'll simply copy them for you. For organizing and playback I suggest iTunes.

For a specific song you want use iTunes to download it. Pay the 99 pennies.

Amazon shows to have thousands of free music downloads. Probably a bunch of stuff you don't want or some catches that go along with it. Never used it.

Most of my library if from CD's that I already own. iTunes is the way to get individual songs. Back in the day, the sound quality of most of the 'free' sources was very questionable. iTunes gives excellent quality music for $0.99.

The copy protection is the only drawback, and some of the newer stuff isn't any more.

Note: you don't need an iTunes account to rip your own CDs, at least not originally.

Default To get an itunes account...

Go to their page
Download their software
Takes a little figuring out but you only pay for what you download and it's usually like $1.50/song

Amazon, you just sign up for amazonmusic account. Pay for what you download.

The good thing about most of the bigger sites is that you just pay for what you download.

"...loopback from output to input on the computer"

There are a huge number of devices available which allow that, also channeling music from your computer audio output (or from about any other source) into an external CD recorder. eBay has all sorts of them listed, but I have never used any and so can't comment on which ones work the best. I do have some device which you can plug into a vinyl disc player to digitize and record the analog signal through a computer, but never got around to using it.

Actually, you don't need *any* software to do that. Just use this site:

YouTube to MP3 Converter - Fast, Free - ListenToYouTube.com

I've used it quite a bit, and it works well.

I use it too. The problem with most downloadable music is quality, or lack of it (bitrate).

Lately my music collection has grown a good deal using a streaming audio recorder (google it) and Beats Music (now Apple) streaming @ 320kb. CD quality MP3s
