CCR's "Bad Moon Rising" also comes to mind when I think of that time.

I was 13 in SC. No way i was going to New York with a bunch of hippies.
Abraxas was a landmark album. Black Magic Woman, Oye Como Va
I still have "Bad Moon Rising" sheet music. I takes me back to sitting on a cold sidewalk in the wee hours of the morning folding papers to take out on my route. Of course the puerile joke was "There is a bathroom on the right".

"Leaving On a Jet Plane" by Peter, Paul and Mary
All my bags are packed,
I'm ready to go
I'm standing here outside your door
I hate to wake you up to say goodbye
But the dawn is breakin',
It's early morn
The taxi's waitin',
He's blowin' his horn
Already I'm so lonesome
I could die
So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go.
I'm leavin' on a jet plane
I Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh, babe, I hate to go.......
And that's exacting like it was.................
can't even read the lyrics without getting choked up...........

"Rainbow" by Marmalade.
I was a USAF TAC pilot and our planes had an "automatic direction finding" (ADF) radio which could receive the AM radio band. We'd tune in the Armed Forces Vietnam Radio Network during calm moments between the fun parts. One day that song came on and I listened for it ever since.
I still love it.
BUT, if you want to see a painfully dumb video, look for it on youtube.

I remember all the songs mentioned. The one most memorable
to me was Bobby Magee, Janice Joplin. The Heads would play
that over and over. Just to jack us Red Necks. Came close to
Bullets a time or two. I know about Dead in Ohio, goggle my
town, Beallsville, Ohio.

My other fav by J Cash
DRIVE ON
Both of the songs I've posted are not entertainment rock songs but, while entertaining they are deep.
Cash has two versions of Drive On and one version has changed a line to
I REMEMBER ONE NIGHT TEX AND ME
WALKED RIGHT UP ON TWO VC
WE HAD OUR 16'S ON ROCK AND ROLL
AND WE SEPERATED THEM
FROM THIER SOULS.
Kinda gets you when you understand this is more than a song.

NAM SONGS
Many take me back to that era but country joe and the fish? "and it's one, two, three, four, what are we fighting for? Don't ask me I don't give a dam, next stop is Vietnam. Please don't call me a pinko" for mentioning it. & CCR's fortunate son.

What song makes me think about Vietnam, I don't remember one song from 1967 that stirs a pre Vietnam memory. I was there 12/67-12/68. while I was there we didn't get any signal from AFRTS so music from 68 was unknown to me. on a trip or something I heard " We got to get out of this place". That made an impression on me. after returning home it was CCR, Cream, and The Rolling Stones music the reminds me of Vietnam.

Yep, "do away with people, blowin' my mind. Do away with people wasting all my precious time"
Funny thing was somebody played that whole album just the other night "Surrialistic Pillow" (1967)it just started a loop in my head that I hadn't heard in a real long time. Probably won't go away for a while.

A coupla things......
Yeah, I had the hots for Grace Slick.....and about anything other female at the time.
I hate to be a whiny loser, but I guess that describes me pretty good, but I have to say that IMHO Canned Heat had the worst vocalist ever.
Does "Whiter Shade of Pale" or anything by the Moody Blues grab anybody?

Born in 62 here. I always think of Vietnam when I hear All Along the Watchtower by Hendrix and Run Through the Jungle by CCR.
To those that went, you guys have my utmost respect for making it through and coming back. Mere words cannot express my gratitude for your service. Saying thanks is not enough but it is the best I can do. Thank You guys and God Bless each one of you.

Lots of good music during that era but my favorite song was " Paint it
black" by the Rolling Stones. The one song that immediately links back
to the war itself and the TV coverage is " These Boots are made for
Walking" by Nancy Sinatra.

One to start the decade of the '60s and one to end it:
Mr. Custer
I remember hearing this one as a kid. A novelty song, made it to number one in 1960.
Gimme Shelter
Released in 1969, pretty much speaks for itself.

This one came out just after Vietnam but it is the song I thought of
Billy, don't be a hero don't be a fool with your life
Billy don't be a hero come back and make me your wife
And as he started to go she said Billy keep your head low
Billy don't be a hero, come back to me

Trip down memory lane
I still listen to many of those tune especially CCR etc.
Link is provided for old sailors and Marines to check out one of the Ships I spent large amount of my young life aboard. Scroll down to 70's Viet War " Home Movies" 1970 by Jerry Schulte, open for some flight ops and the music in the background, I got a instant whiff of NavGas!!!
This particular carrier was around for along time, You Korean vets might enjoy some of the pictures provided from that error, Banshee's etc. Roam around the site, the man who put this together over the years made a lot of us old sailors smile, especially since they made a reef of her!! Memories.

This was late but.......
Didn't "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Old Oad Tree" take on some meaning for returning Vets even though the basis was different (returning convict)?
It could ALMOST be interpreted to represent returning Vets but the line "and put the blame on me" doesn't apply to soldiers, many of whom were drafted. Of course if somebody VOLUNTEERED to go instead of staying with wife/girlfriend it could kinda sorta by construed that way. But I never liked the link to Vets but the Vets probably didn't mind.

This particular carrier was around for along time, You Korean vets might enjoy some of the pictures provided from that error, Banshee's etc. Roam around the site, the man who put this together 'over the years made a lot of us old sailors smile, especially since they made a reef of her!! Memories.

You have a mate here, Ordy was on the Oriskany, and I saw her many times when she was moored here for parts before towed to become part of mother nature.
