The best place to get good sound back then without records was out of those two big reels at 7 1/2 "/ sec. with Ampex Tape and the TEAC that could probably be had at a great price at the PX along with the Pentax camera.

All my favorites have already been posted...The End, Fortunate Son...
It's pretty tough to come up with something different at this point but who else remembers "Tribes"???? 'God surely knows....each lonely soldier.....
How about "One Tin Soldier, The Legend of Billy Jack"???
Some songs of that era just stick in your head..."Satisfaction" by the Rolling Stones or "Penny Lane" by the Beetles. I was just a kid but I still remember the very first time I heard either song.

House of the Rising Sun...
I was over there in the AF '67-68, Eric Burton and The Animals "House of the Rising Sun" (1964) was one that seemed to resonate well with things going on at the time...

It could ALMOST be interpreted to represent returning Vets but the line "and put the blame on me" doesn't apply to soldiers, many of whom were drafted. Of course if somebody VOLUNTEERED to go instead of staying with wife/girlfriend it could kinda sorta by construed that way. But I never liked the link to Vets but the Vets probably didn't mind.

A yellow ribbon traditionally meant a sweetie in the Cavalry.

The only possible way to make that song any worse is to have the burn out Bob Dylan try to sing it!!!!!!
He might have wrote a lot of great songs but the dude couldn't carry a tune in a bucket.

Was listening to the 70's run on XM in the few minutes I drive lately, and they were in a program that talked about "tie a yellow ribbon" being for a vet on his way home. I had always thought the convict story, but based on the band interviews, not so!

During that same period it seem most of us had to purchase a reel to reel sound system with turntable to spin those vinyls. It usually came with very large speakers, tweeters, woofers etc. you could blow the windows out. One of the best lines I heard was " turn the volume up and rip the knob off". Wish I still had mine, that tape reel could hold a lot of tunes.
Seems we are mostly rock and rollers here. One album sticks in my mind, probably because she was a cutie and I young, was a 16 yr. old named Tanya Tucker, release a album around 71-72 as I recall. Can't remember time frame for Delta Dawn but still hear her singing that song.

Sky Pilot
Eric Burton and the Animals said it best for me with Sky Pilot, a young W1/W2 flying combat assaults for the 25th ID, 9th ID (what was left of them), 199 Light IN, and 5 SF.
Out of uniform: Pat Fitzsimmons (KIA in an OH-58, AUG 1970) and myself, blowing smoke and trying not to think about the KIA's earlier that day.

I'm not old enough to remember the war in Vietnam. Seems the first exposure to the war that I can recall was watching the movie.
Only John Wayne could make the sun set in the east . . .

I still have mine up in the attic, Teac 6300, Pioneer turntable, amp, tuner, cassette player and a couple of Sansui speakers with 15" bass cones. They've been boxed up for over 25 years, wonder if the mice have been chewing on them. I still have a closet full of records and tapes. Might come in handy someday (my wife says I never get rid of anything, she's correct).

Wow, great thread! Another vote for "White Rabbit" here. Didn't serve, just missed the cutoff by about 18 months (whew!)- but I did hang with a lot of grunts from KMCAS in my ne'er-do-well youth.

I had my Pioneer 1500 rebuilt several times and finally gave up. I still have it. I do still use my Pioneer PL 41 turntable and 88A speakers. What a sound. I gave my parents my Pioneer 77 speakers. The Animals could not have understood what they put down on vinyl, or could they? You'll never reach the sky. We would drop you off at the end of the day, and we would go home to our hooch and our stereo, hoping to get you out of there the next day.
Was it a Chaplin or the helicopter pilot? I don't know.

Surprised no one has mentioned Janis Joplin....Take a little piece of my heart. Used to play that eight track in the ordnance shop and it drove the chief crazy. He'd yank it out of the player and replace it with different C&W artists. It disappeared one day and everyone accused the chief with a smile. He never admitted it but we knew it was him.

"Billy Don't be a Hero" by Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods. My teenage sister played that 45 over and over in the early 70s and it was probably the first song I knew the words to other than happy birthday. I was 5 or 6 at the time. My two daughters know all the words also since I play it frequently on my ipod in the car. They are 12 and 13.

It's not unlikely that at some level we were fighting EAST Germans.

And Spanish speakers , believed to be Cubans , messing with the POWS.

I should add another since this is about songs that make us think about Vietnam
I was helping a neighbor haul hay back in 1968 and we were at his house for lunch when they received the visit that told them about the lost of their son
there are two things that always bring me to tears making me remember that (even now my eyes are tearing up)
1. the scene in saving private Benjamin were the farm wife is in the kitchen watching the car pull up, I had to walk out of the theatre that night when we went to see it
2. the Statler brothers song "more than a name on the wall"
and another I just found " the wall song"
