Bob Dylan's song " Masters Of War" is one. But "Paint It Black" has to be the one that makes me think of that era. But I wasn't a gleam in my daddy's eye yet. But my hat is off to all that have fought for this country when they were called to.

I remember We Got To Get Out Of This Place, Proud Mary and Leaving On A Jet Plane. The day I left, we were taxing out on the runway at Bien Hoa and the pilot played Jet Plane. There were about 200 guys on that plane and not a dry eye. I will never forget that. We took off on a beautiful bright day and the ground was so green. As we got higher you could see fire support bases, LZ's and smoke. 13 hours later we were in California.

When I was in HS and college, Tim Irvin had a great rock band and they played lots of parties and dances. He was drafted and wrote this song after he got back. There is another version on YouTube where he performs it at the wall and President Clinton in the audience. I thought I would show you this version.

Did not serve in the military. Several friends did and survived, but one changed in a bad way.

I was rejected during the draft. I tried to join the navy and was refused. So I built CNC machines that made turret bearings and main engine rotors for the m1abrams Chrysler tank. I made machines that manufactured the breech box and barrel for the 155mm howitzer for the us Army. Later I assembled the 155mm howitzers. I built machines that made parts for jet engines for the air force too.

I did my tour of duty at home supporting our service men and women with my highest quality of workmanship I could provide. I was proud to do it.

Not war related but: Lay Lady Lay by Bob Dylan, Green Onions and Time is Tight by Booker T and the Memphis Group and In the Ghetto by
the King Elvis, and Silver Wings by Merle Haggard. Those were all popular my first year in, 1969.

I graduated from high school in 1967, in the San Francisco Bay Area. It was the summer of love. Berkeley and SF were interesting places then.

The song I remember best started out: one, two, three, four, what are we fighting for? ...

My senior class hired a Bay Area band called The greatfull dead. The school administration would not approve of us paying $400.00 and cancelled the band.

Indeed. I graduated high school in 1967. There was a time, I think in 1966, when I noticed that every song in the Top 40 was good. Every one! I knew when I turned the radio on there would be a good song there.

When I hear the opening to "Spirit in the Sky" I'm taken
back to 1970 when I was 10. Cool song.

In the late '70's I was in NYC and going to Columbia grad school. One night, listening to the college radio station, the DJ played part of The Ballad of the Green Berets, abruptly stopping it. He then proceeded, insultingly, to bad mouth the song, and what it stands for.

So I called the station up, got the DJ kid on the line, and, uh, berated him with extreme vigor. The jerk hung up on me, but he sure got the message that one listener at any rate, had a different point of view.

Of course there was the:
"I feel like I'm fixing to die rag" by Country Joe and the Fish.
Heard this at a Country Joe concert in a very small venue the night before my second draft physical.

Then:
"8 Miles High" by the Byrds.
Every time I hear it I picture a medvac chopper lifting off from a hot zone. Can't explain why, I was 21 in '67 and like many others from that period fully participated in the culture.

I was talking to my wife about this just yesterday listening some good ol' 60's-70's music. Just listening to the songs you get taken back to good memories. Yes they were bad times, but still, the people that lived through those era's were great. I just don't see any of that with today's music. Music today tells stories of MONEY, FAME, SEX, and just stupid JUNK in general. Back then, the music told stories of struggle, War,Love, Life, etc.

The shards of glass,plastic and metal that is working itself out to the surface of my cheeks and face.
These shards were healed over many years ago, and have been coming to the surface for many years.
Just felt another, and it came out with a fingernail assistance.
Just crud my Doctor says. Quite normal.

Jinx Dawson of Coven recorded this for the soundtrack of "Billy Jack"...I was 16, the war was still on, and draft registration was imminent for me at 18...but my number wasn't up, and the war finally wound down...but the lyrics were haunting and remain relevant, even, today...

I notice in that top 40 list that it's a total mix Rock and Roll, R&B, Soul, Sinatra and Country. We were actually free to like any and all music....didn't have to choose up sides and hate some music. I remember in '66 at the EM club one of the juke box favorites was Buck Owens ( I Got the Hungrys for your Love and I'm Waitin' in your Welfare Line)...no kidding!

Every time I hear CCR "Fortunate Son" it reminds me of what a cowardly slug Al Gore was back then.
