Default Poll: What is the most common age group of S&W revolver owners

Just curious as to what the most common age group is for revolver owners. Maybe we span several age groups and maybe there are more younger folks than I would suspect.

Your vote will be counted but how you voted (your age) specific to you will not be shown for privacy purposes.

One has to wonder how that will effect values of these firearms in the future? With limited availability of new revolvers of a quality that would make them sought after maybe prices will soar like those of the Registered or Python. Or maybe a lack of exposure to wheelguns will send them to the dust heep. I'm just happy to own the ones I do and to still hold out hope of obtaining the ones I still want.

So far the poll is going how I expected with so many younger generations that are only into semi-auto's. I'm also into vintage stereo gear and it's much the same age groups.

Inflation goes up while the market will shrink so maybe the prices will hold steady. The more rare and sought after guns will likely continue to go up though...IMHO.

Poll should be titled "What is the most common age group of S&W revolver owners who participate in S&W specific internet discussion forum polls . . . "

Right. Nothing too official but I don't think it will be too far from reality.

With 50+ percent of the responders being in the 61 - 70 age group, I'd say that it is really true that, "with age comes wisdom."

I'm sure there is some truth to that Bill. I just got an XD9 for HD and CC but honestly, I still know for most shooters a revolver is the best choice for that.

And there are lots of folks in the most wise ranges that don't do the computer/forum thing so I think realistic data would indicate high numbers in that demographic.

Here's a vote for the 31-40 crowd. So far just a crowd of one, but I can't be the only one with good sense.

An interesting question. I think there will always be a market for the high-end revolver product as you mention; to me, the big question is whether the current polymer gun crowd will transition (mature ) into revolvers as their shooting interests change, or due to cultural phenomena. If this occurs, values may increase - just ask all the new Python owners paying top dollar due to the "Walking Dead" cable series.

I suspect there will always be a revolver market (for hunting and long-range target shooting, etc.), but whether it will expand, shrink or stagnate in the long run is unclear.

I like my new bottom feeder but they don't compare in looks. Almost for reliability depending on user and particular pistol, but I would still give the edge to wheel guns. I am 50 btw.

Well, as far as bottom feeders go the ones I like are over a 100 years old design.
Lots of revolvers, many 1911's for me!

It's right anything younger than 40yo is plastic. On a tight budget there affordable.

My pistols are reliable and dependable as my wheel guns are.

An aside to the OP's poll; How many years have you owned S&Ws? I'm 76.5 yrs. now. I purchased my first S&W the day after my 21st. birthday in 1960. On that great day, the second day of my life that I could legally purchase a handgun in Nevada, I purchased both a S&W Combat Masterpiece 38 Special and a Colt Python, 4". Both used and in like new condition. I have owed one S&W or another ever since. The Colt Pythons that I have owned went away for one reason or another. The S&W revolvers have remained as my "go to guns". I have probably carried concealed a S&W M 60 more than any other of my concealable handguns. But, I digress......so if I can still subtract, I have owned a S&W for more than 55 yrs. And, no, I don't still own that original S&W.

Anyone else? I am referring to S&Ws that you have purchased on your own, not those given to you. ..............

Chief, I'm sort of like you. Mostly revolvers, but have a lot of older design semi autos: Colt 1903 .32 ACP; Colt 70s series Gold Cup; Colt original Commander from the 1950s in 38 Super; Kimber Ultra CDP II; Colt 1908 in .25 ACP; new fangled Walther PPK (2 of these).... Etc. as you can see, all of these were designed, if not built, before even my time.

Still love my revolvers, though, and they account for most of my collection, and for most of what I carry on a daily basis.

I am 69 and own more revolvers than semi-autos. I own more Colt guns followed by Ruger and then S&W.

My conceal carry guns are a government model 1911 in .45 ACP or 10mm in urban areas, a Glock 10mm or .40 S&W in remote rural areas, and a 4" S&W 29-2 .44 magnum in the woods.

First revolver - Ruger Blackhawk circa 1969, teenager.
First Smith revolver - Model 29, 1982.
I'm 61.

These days i would choose a striker fired polygun over a revolver unless it's a niche where no reasonable semi exists. For example, magnum bigger than 357, or a rimfire revolver because it will shoot whatever is available at the moment and go bang every time.

I'm 69 and am well aware of the negative press my baby-boom age group have generated, and part of that negativity is our sheer numbers which skewed a whole society. It's just our generation bulge that is reflected in this little poll, no?
BTW, I love this forum, and everyday enjoy reading the life of American hand gunners, often with envy, but not always. I just lurk and don't feel I can add much to your narratives.

Interesting bell curve. I kind of expected the peak to be my age group (51-60) just due to sheer numbers combined with interest in computer forum participation. Kinda cool to see that the next age group (61-70) is leading with the highest number of participants.

29 years old here and utterly in love with revolvers. Unfortunately I only own one at the moment. But that will be changing next year.

Im proud to say Im in the lower age group (31-40) and was taught from a young age to respect quality in guns. Thanks to my father and grandfater I only buy / shoot P&R S&W, old Winchesters (mainly .22's- 52's, 75's, 69's etc) and a handful of other quality guns. I belive quality will always bring a premium...if not more for my kids!!!!

I guess it depends on ones perspective. To the youngsters all but the first one or two groups might be considered crusty. Myself included.

"Depends?" If one is wearing Depends, I'd think a certain level of "crustiness" would be a given ...

My 17 year old has claimed the 15-3 and my 12 year old has claimed the 28-2. When they can safely store them, probably sometime in their 20's, they will be revolver owners

Not to be insensitive, just realistic, with the majority of revolver owners in this age group there will be a lot of used revolvers on the market. Sorry, I am in this age bracket as well, just saying.

So long as I don't have to vote on a butterfly ballot. Does that tell you something?

First revolver (and handgun$: Hawes Deputy Marshal, Christmas, 1968.

First CF: Ruger OM Blackhawk .357/9mm convertible, 1974.

First S&W: 19-3 1976.

Still got the first two.

I'm 56 and do not live in West Palm Beach.

If I bought something because it was cheaper than an S&W, I'd not be satisfied. I bought a cheap gun for a 'stop-gap' measure and though it fills the need, I'm not happy with it.

I was tempted to get a Ruger rather than a Smith when I wanted a 686. Nothing against Ruger, but I'm so glad I went a little out on the limb for a 686.

Why have you excluded Smith and Wesson owners under the age of 21?

I got my first S&W, a 6" Model 27, when I was 17

Bought the 1st S&W on 02/18/93. A 686-3 w/6". It's my baby and exactly 1 year to the day older than my marriage. They are both just as solid and reliable as it gets! Blessings happen!!!

Cool, but honestly, how many members do you think there are in this forum that are under 21 and have their own revolvers?

Good for you Rudy! It took me till I turned 50 to get my first S&W revolver so I guess we're the late bloomers.

You stole my post idea! I'm 45 this year, and all I saw on that poll was- "estate sale!"

Now would you older fellas please quit procrastinating? I'm sure there's one of you dust-farters out there with a nice 3" 65 that's just putting of the inevitable...

I'm 43 and have been collecting S&W's for 20 years. Wish I would have focused on S&W's from the start, 20 years ago they were cheaper.

True revolver guys are old enough to remember Barney Fife's single bullet from when those episodes first aired...

I bought my 1st Revolver in 1990 or so at the ripe old age of 23. It was a Model 19 with a 2/12 inch barrel. I still have that gun and the receipt. I bought with my Dad. I have since then collected a safe full of them. Over the years have migrated to J frames for carry and collecting K,L and Frames. I have a few holes to fill in the collection.

Lol! Bazinga!

It was also a pre-emptive block-and-paste strike appealing to authority and expertise as the poster who asserted that his semi-autos are just as reliable as his revolvers has over 7,400 posts in under five years.

I don't know how to set up a poll, but could someone set up the same poll for semi-auto pistol owners? A comparison of the two groups would be interesting. Although I wonder if a poll on this web site would include so much overlap that we cannot see any difference.
