People Who Swear Are Smarter !
**** yeah: Swearing is a sign you're smarter, scientists say | City A.M.
There are other studies that say people who swear are; more honest, live longer, have a larger vocabulary, like broccoli, etc.
It is on the internet, and done by scientists, maybe funded by the government 😕, so it must be a fact!! And to top it off as proven, I heard it on the TV this morning, Good Morning America, 12/14/15 !!!!
BTW Lee, I did read the rules again, your warning, etc. and am not being creative, just advising of proven science!!! 😎

Well that must put me high on the Mensa list, I worked construction with people from many different nationalities. After a while I got quite proficient in swearing in at least 5 languages.
Believe it or not it helps you if you hurt yourself or something goes just terrible SNAFU at the worst possible time, Murphey's law will most certainly come into play.
Of course you have to be very "two-faced" at that point if you have a "interesting vocabulary'', what you say or do on the job vs the dinner table home or out in the general public. If you goof it can get very quite and quite unsettling for a period of time.

I used to buy shooting stuff from a wholesale place in Vineland NJ. Sometimes ol Bob actually said a word or 2 that weren't cuss words. But...not very often. I mean he had sewer gas spewing from his mouth

I grew up in a !@#$%^& poor neighborhood in a !@#$%^& Navy town. Thus, I learned to swear like a !@#$%^& sailor at a *&^%$# early age. Despite this, for some !@#$%^& reason, I'm still waiting for my first !@#$%^& Nobel Prize.

Quote of the day comes from a middle school librarian as she opened the storeroom door, "OH (four letter word for feces)!", followed by a quick search to see if there were any children within earshot. So, it must be true.

Recon I must be a moron then. I try (not always successfully) to avoid using colorful language.
I've always believed that people who swore a lot had more limited vocabularies.
It doesn't take too many synapses firing to use the same handful of four letter words in every sentence.

I always laughed....
I admit it, I have a horrible mouth and wish it wasn't quite so horrible. But I always laughed at that "A person swears that doesn't have the vocabulary to say different".
I think that's a crock of ****.

There is a certain elegance to a word that can be used as an invective, a noun, verb, adverb and adjective in the same sentence...

Hmmn, elegant vulgarity, interesting thought...

I am fully fluent in Billingsgate, as it is called in England. I'm so proficient, that I had to tone my language WAAAAY down when I came to the US. If the study were true I'd be rich enough to make Bill Gates tug his forelock. Sadly, it's a pile of steaming....... well, you get the idea.

I beg to differ! I have a very rich vocabulary, both normal and can also get quite colorful if needed. I'm interested and have been interested in many things over the decades and I can and have conversed quite decently with the very well educated or gutter scum if necessary.
I said converse that is in referring to speaking. As far as writing goes admittedly I'm not a good speller/writer and even if I know the "big" words as I'm also a bit lazy I use simpler easy to spell words when putting pen to paper so to speak.
Being I'm retired I frequent 4 forums ( here, 2 car forums 1 stock picker forum) and of course have many things to do around the house so I tend to whip right through a reply or when starting a thread. I tend to jump in and out of forums all day and my spell checker seems to have a mind of its own at times.

FWIW, here's my reasoning.
When you smack your thumb with a hammer, or someone cuts you off in traffic, do you reflexively let loose with a string of swear words, or do you yell intelligent, coherent, complex sentences that demonstrate your sophisticated vocabulary?
What if your 5 year old kid (or grandkid) is there? If you stop a second and THINK about it, do you still swear a blue streak? If you still swear, and then realize the little one is listening, when you stop and THINK about it, do you wish you had said something different?
I believe that 99% of us are going to agree on the answers to those questions.
So if you swear reflexively WITHOUT THINKING, but you don't swear when you stop to actually THINK about what is coming out of your mouth, which really makes more use of your brain - swearing or not swearing?
Truth is, on the internet, you can find some kind of "study" to support or justify almost any position you care to take. Look at all the "studies" and "evidence" the anti-gun crowd have to support their position. Does any of it change the fact that what they say doesn't really make any sense? Do their "studies" make their claims true - or their position right?

How about if you swear sarcastically?
Artistic swearing isn't just going on like rap lyrics, but
using words for punctuation or to drive home a point.

There was a railroad trestle and all of these well dressed men in top hats and coats were peering over the side at a steam locomotive that is nose down in the ravine. And the caption was:
Oh ****!

I was often assigned as a liason between the professionals and the folks in the field.
I'd have to translate, "Install it at angle 30 degrees down and 30 degrees back."
To:
"Weld the damn thing on there cattywhompus."
A rather crude example, but it's the truth.
