First day of retirement.
Today is that day. Went to the plant yesterday for my last shift. I've been letting my replacement run the show for the last 2-3 weeks, so after lunch I cleaned out my desk and headed to the house. Not sure if I'm retired or just unemployed. Slept in until about 7 this morning. Finally made it down to the shop about 7:30. I've got a pretty good backlog of pushers and plugs from being away during the Holidays. Current plan is to try to do a couple of gun shows per month. There is a show of some type within a 4-5 hour drive just about every week of the year. Thinking I should also get a FFL so I can peddle a few guns while I'm at it. I'm looking forward to working at my own pace. At the same time, I'm not sure how I'll do without a regular paycheck. Time will tell, I guess.

Congratulations! If you enjoy retirement just half as much as I do you are going to have the time of your life. Larry

Got that right. And why put off until tomorrow when you can put it off until next week?!?

I have been retired 12 years now, on my last day of work I left at noon, walked out the door and never looked back, when I got home I took all the clothes I wore to work and threw them in the trash, went out and bought several new pair of jeans and tee shirts and a new pair of sneaks.

Congrats! The last day is an awesome feeling. OP, it sounds like you have a lot to keep you busy, so you'll be fine. For me, I thought it would be good to lounge around for six months or so. I lasted 2 weeks. I started a new career. Of course this time, it's only part time and much more enjoyable.

My congrats as well. It might take you awhile to really feel retired. At first it feels like a vacation, and you might feel that you have to get all sorts of things done quickly, until you remind yourself that this vacation is a long one and you are not returning to work.
Giving up a regular paycheck is the worst part of retirement, but its worth it because you also give up all the stress and pressure of working. I was a health care executive supervising 10 nursing homes and working with an increasingly difficult corporate leadership. I worked until I hit 70 and then finally left. Other than that paycheck I have never missed a single thing about work.
Good luck.

Hopefully you have saved and invested wisely and can or have set up a regular distribution of cash to yourself just like paychecks. I find that between my pension and Social Security I haven't needed to touch my IRA money, other then the mandatory withdrawal once you hit 70 1/2 years old.
Just keep busy doing things you "enjoy" doing.

Well, I'm a few months shy of 69. "Jennings Machine and Tool" has been a sort of hobby business for several years now. The only pressure from it has been some times when I've gotten seriously behind in getting orders shipped. Now, there is some pressure to get orders in as well as getting them out. I've got to decide how to best advertise the products and be sure I'm getting some bang out of my advertising buck.
My favorite comments have been about the naps. I love naps. Is one per day enough? Are two too many?

After retirement I went from a gun collector to a gun liquidator overnight. Getting serious now after 8 years.

Congrats! I retired one year ago today. You may find yourself going to bed and getting up at the same times as you did when you were working. I guess those habits are hard to break after so many years. The main difference is that you can take an early afternoon nap almost every day. A part time job a few days a week is a good way to keep from getting bored. For me, it's working as a range officer at my local club. The pay sucks but I get to shoot a lot and hang out with other retirees.

Rest assured that two naps per day are NOT too much. In fact, I sort of think two might be 'just right'. .... :-)

I held out until 67 with 50 years in heavy manufacturing. I go back in once in a while to see old friends, but I don't miss the work / stress for a minute. Like others have said, you'll get used to your new schedule. It took me about a week or so. I've been out of the rat race just short of 2 years.
Naps are important for mental as well as physical well being. I find a few trips to the club / range a week has a calming effect also.
Best of luck and enjoy.

Congratulations you made it! I remember my first day off, went to roll out of bed and remembered oh yeah, don't have to do this anymore. Fun part was the wife who left later than me got up and made ready and I made a show of getting comfy in bed, she watched the display and said, that's disgusting and left for work. Now that was great fun. Enjoy your retirement, you earned it!

Get up every morning and take a big deep breath and then relax and enjoy the day and every day thereafter.
I left in 08 and I have a great time everyday. This year I have to take mandatory disbursements from my pension so everything is going to change again. Have fun

I just passed 5 1/2 years. I have no desire to go back. Yes, I take naps, and I don't bother to count them. I'm pretty sure I even get 3 in some days. And some days I miss my morning nap, sleeping in till the crack of 10:00. My wife tried all kinds of things to make me miserable. I just get up, take a nap, then play on the computer for a while until my next nap. I had an employee who voiced the opinion that a nap was the greatest luxury in the world.
Back when I was employed, I even snuck away and took an occasional nap. Once at a gunshow, I was so tired I just took the empty long gun cases and spread them out under our table, then passed out. It felt good.
Everyone wants to talk about money. So yes, it is shorter than it was, but if you saved it becomes manageable. You can't spend more than you have, so use of credit cards can be a problem. I try to go all cash. You can do it if you moderate your expenses. High dollar meals are pretty limited. But I prefer modest fare anyway.

Retired
Congradulations, you made it!!! On 5 Jan 16 I will be retired 11 years. WOW !!! I still don't believe it, I don't have to drive 20 miles down I-95 to the Puzzel Palace . It took me 5 years to stop getting up at 0430 in the morning, makes for a long day with Fox News, though. Life is good. Enjoy the gun shows, fishing, gardening and just sleeping in.

Been retired four months. Haven't had long pants on in four months. When I was getting close, I'd look at the shirt or the tie I was wearing at the end of the day and if it looked a little worn out, off to the trash. Left myself with enough nice stuff to hit a wedding or funeral or get buried . . .
