Question POLL: where do you shoot?

A recent thread about home shooting ranges got me wondering.....

Where does everyone do their shooting?

Me.... I'm stuck with an outdoor public range.

At home... Outdoors. This is my handgun range that's right off of my driveway. There are also more steel targets off on the side in the woods. I've since marked out to 80' and added a light weight movable table. I'm actually talking with my father in law about making an indoor range in his barn.

I shoot at a club that I've been a member to for about 40 years. Its a great club and about 15 minutes from where I live. When I'm done shooting I can go in the club and have a beer!

I also go out in the desert a lot and shoot there. No place for that in the survey.

I either just step out my door or if I need a bit more space go to a neighbor who has about forty odd yards to use.

That describes a lot of WV

Family farm. Ranges are absolutely packed with people new to firearms at the moment and that's just not an ideal spot to be in in my opinion. Besides were else would I want to lol

I picked home range outside because it was a close as I could get to where I shoot. We have public land nearby. There is plenty of empty high desert nearby and mountains where you can shoot.

This was taken near one of the place we shoot. If you want to set targets at a 1000 yards or three; you can.

My own back yard. Every time I read about the complaints about
shooting ranges I feel lucky that i don't have to depend on them.

You forgot to list Wilderness / Outdoor BLM Land, which is where we do a lot of shooting, here in Nevada.

Economics finally forced poor, old, retired me to give up my longtime club membership for 2016. The club only had outdoor rifle and pistol ranges... nothing indoors. It seemed like weather or maintenance activities of some sort or third party training sessions were always a problem anytime I was in a position to go down there.

In late-September, I bought a promotional 4-month membership to a premium indoor range and I have gotten a tremendous amount of use and enjoyment out of it. No worries about weather or anything else! It's been great but it is ending soon. My options are to join for a whole year (expensive) or go hourly fee and cut down on my visits rather drastically... or possibly slip under the radar for another discounted 4-month promotional deal.

Life gets a lot more complicated for me later this year so it's not a simple or easy choice. Gonna have to play it by ear.

I much prefer to shoot outdoors but if my trigger finger gets too itchy on a rainy day I will go to an indoor range.

I must respectfully disagree. A Public Range is an organized facility and usually operated by the County it's in or the State.

BLM, Open Range Land, is just that, it's open wilderness, no buildings, no structures of any kind. Most shooting is done in areas where there are Box Canyons, or where there are natural, deep long ravines.

I can't argue with that Bam. Just as the infamous Bam-Bam formula discriminates against older folks like me with little time left above the grass... the one year paid-in-advance membership discriminates against those of us who plan (or hope) to move away before one year is up.

In either situation, long-term commitments are not in my best interest right now.

I was a member of a large multi range gun club for 40 years.

When I moved that club is just too far for just informal target shooting so I left it.

I have a almost 100 SAFE yards at my property. If I'm the only one at home I can shoot up to 150 yards.

I joined a small ( limited to 300 members) club about 10 miles down the lake, They have a decent up to 200 yard range and a very decent indoor range, up to 75'. (trap and archery also)

No, unfortunately not. The current plan (subject to change) is to move ~40 miles west of here. Mrs. TTSH & I need more land and more house than what we have now for our retirement place. It would no longer be practical to continue shooting at the range in question.

I am a member of both an indoor range and an outdoor range and shoot at both here in Phoenix (about 70:30 indoor : outdoor). I'm jealous of those of you with outdoor home ranges....that would be my preference! When I'm "home" in Wyoming I shoot outside the back door.

Well, it's still land open to the public that you don't own and requires no membership. So close enough for this un-scientific poll.

Indianhead Rifle and Pistol Club - Auxiliary Range

Fireline - Shooting & Training Center - Rice Lake - Wisconsin

Have lifetime membership at IRPC ( outdoor 5 minute away), pay charter fee at fireline (indoor 30 minutes away)

Belonging to the private indoor range allows shooting even when it's -20 (f), and renting full auto.

Outdoor public? range. Range is owned by the county conservation group, you have to submit an application, take a test, and get interviewed by county conservation employee.
Range is about one mile from the sheriff's office/jail, one mile from the largest city in the county, and used by both. I have seen other LEO groups there, including one time a response team doing tear gas training. The lead guy said they were done, and that I might want to wait a while before using! 😙 Luckily the wind was up that day!
First time I ever saw a female LEO with high and tight hair style. Well developed biceps, and a definite hard stare, think keith44special giving a miscreant the evil eye! 😎

Public Ranges can be a good thing!

Here in the Las Vegas/Henderson Area, which is Clark County, we have the Clark County Range. It's located about 10 miles North of Las Vegas and covers 4,000 acres of land. There is a 50 station, handgun/small rifle range that goes out 75 yards. There is a 40 station rifle range that has a 100 yd section, a 200 yd section and a 300 yd section. There is a 15 station Skeet & Trap Range, a Bow & Arrow facility, a mock Western Town & Cowboy Shooting Facility and a Club House & Restaurant.

It is a tightly controlled facility, with Range officers and control towers at all the Ranges. Everything is controlled by them. I am not sure about all the ranges but there are between 8 & 10 Range Officers on duty, all the time, at the Handgun Range. It's about the same at the Rifle Range. The best part is that it only Cost $9 to shoot, or whatever, all day, no hourly time limit.

I haven't been to a public range since about 1981 or so. Bought my own property in the country soon afterward so I could shoot and hunt where I live. This is an older photo of my range, as I have since added a shooting tree. I can stretch out to 100 yards, but that's about it unless I cut down more trees.

A couple of gun shops I visit have indoor ranges, but there are few outdoor ranges around. Although I am about 40 miles from the infamous Knob Creek Gun Range, I've never shot there.

$9 sounds like a good deal... But did you know that the BLM procured the land and a whopping $65 million in tax payer dollars to build it? Even with all that.... last I read the place couldn't break even with just operating costs, and the County has subsidized with millions to keep it open.

Yes, I am aware that there are some financial issues. That 65 Million, is spread over a ten year period, as I understand it. There has been talk of increasing the fees and to try and invite in and/or create shooting events, that would bring in revenue. It's an amazing facility, only two years plus old and it's going through growth and learning issues. In the end, I am hopeful that all will turn out well!

Belong to a few clubs but also own 134 acres about 40 min from our home.Spend a lot of time there in the summer and during deer season.Pistol range is 25 yards, rifle is 50,100 & 200 yards.Steel targets between 100 and 200 for rifle and on the 25 yd pistol.Changed some things since this picture was taken, feel very fortunate to have this. When we bought it in 95 it was a struggle but well worth it now.

I can go to 75 yards off my back deck. For up to 200 yards, I take the ATV to the back of the farm and shoot into the 60' hill behind the creek. For longer ranges, I have to go to either a private or public range.
