Movie Theater Behavior
The "I remember when" thread struck a chord today. I used to love going to the movies, and losing yourself in the experience. I saw "The Revenant" yesterday and the guy in front of me was texting intermittently throughout, while couples all around me commented on the film. The wheel has turned and silence is no longer even expected, and I'm the weird guy shushing people.
We just got a 55 inch tv, don't reckon I'll ever go to a theater again..

It has been a couple of decades since I have gone to the movies. 40 plus years ago, I went all the time. I even remember when we could smoke in movies. The smoking was not a problem, but loud mouths talking and misbehaving is a problem.

I do go to see an occasional movie at a theater which justifies a big screen (Star Wars, etc.) but for most, my HT works jus fine. Will go see the re-release of the Maltese Falcon (75th anniversary) on the big screen next Sunday... even with the ridiculous snack prices, that's just gotta have a box o'popcorn, a soda and some Jujubes

Since the beginning of the year I must have been in the movie theatre now about 6 times, one time in Maryland and rude and obnoxious people have not been a problem! Everyone young and old have been on their best behavior!

I listened to some jack hole obnoxiously laugh and talk to himself every 5 seconds in the Deadpool movie. It was a funny movie, but not that funny....

If it's one I really want to get into I go on Monday or Tuesday night a week or two after it opens. Usually just a few folks there.
I don't care much for crowds.

I prefer the Cinema grill, and if I am there it is to see a movie that the kids like, I am there for the cheeseburger and the beer, and oblivious to what happens around me and sometimes the movie. If I am watching something for myself, I would be at home watching satellite TV or the DVD.

Wednesday is Senior Citizen discount day.
Very well behaved and quiet crowd.
Only have to put up with a little snoring during the film.

Yes, after the movie they let everyone know that they are in a theater rather than in their kitchens.
Sometimes I wish a portion of the crowd would have some Beano before showing up.

Never noticed any steam in the theater.
If it was the Tuesday night Bean Dinner crowd one might think so.

The wife and I went to "The Martian" about a week before Christmas. We went to a matinee, so we got in for $5 each using the senior discount. We were a few minutes late so the previews were running and the theater was dark but there were seats right in the area I like best so we quietly seated our selves, and settled in and enjoyed the movie. I wanted to see who one of the characters real name was, so we sat there a few extra minutes. As we got up to leave I noticed there were no people heading to the exit, we had been the only people in a room for 200. Special Us!

Funny story, when my wife and I were first married, it must have been her cooking, I was really constipated so I went to the drug store to get something for it, it said for my body weight I should take four pills, I had never had this problem before in my life and I wasn't sure if I should take all four, so I took two and went to bed, the next morning I woke up with a BAD case of gas, that night we were going to the movies with some friends and I didn't go all day, when we got to the Theater I said lets sit in the back row, when we sat down I told them about my problem, everyone sitting in the area was laughing, after a few minutes they were no longer laughing but running for their lives.

Could have been me , my parents could never sit through a movie with me. I even cried at cartoons.
I used to enjoy the first showing at noon/1PM and would sit through the 2nd show, so I could understand the dialog, but now the lead time between showings is an hour or more so it's not possible. Haven't been to a movie out here in the 6 years since I moved.

I did something"once"!!Not proud of it....just....made a mistake & came close to getting in tbl.Sitting watching a movie I'd been really looking forward to seeing...two teen girls were sitting in front of me talking and texting.I leaned forward after a while & asked them to please tone it down. One stopped turned ,looked at me,smerked & said(second word was )you......turned & resumed talking! That's when I lost it!! They moved & left!

We're spoiled here in Austin, TX by the Drafthouse Theaters:
https://drafthouse.com/
Sure, the prices are a little bit higher, but you can watch a movie the way you're supposed to - among quiet and polite people. I really hated to do this once, but we were watching a movie there and a lady with three kids had just ordered and received their meals. This was followed by a non-stop argument among the kids about who got what, and so-and-so got more French fries than I did, etc. I reluctantly wrote out my complaint on the provided card, and within 5 minutes the mom and kids were shown the door.
Alamo Drafthouse made me a loyal customer at that point. I hope you have one close to where you live - it's definitely worth it.
Regards,
Dave

The worst experience I had at any theater, was when I went to see: Saving Private Ryan. It was a packed house, and I was sat next to a lady. Not bad until she opened her mouth every time something happened by saying: "my God, oh my God, my God.'' She ruined the movie for all around her. I had to go back a week later to rewatch the movie to find out what was said in the movie.
Lately here, I just go to the first showing, small crowds and no noise.

If others are interfering with your enjoyment take it up with an usher.
"I paid good money to see and enjoy this movie."
"Will you or the manager take car of this ??"
OR, do I need to use this VERY BRIGHT flashlight and my whistle on the offenders.

Miss Pam and I are right there with you! With out new 55" Hi-def/blue ray smart tv and surround sound there just isn't much need or desire to go to the theater any more. Our last few time to do it were not pleasant experiences. We don't miss it at all.

I go to the movies 3 or 4 times a month. The new breed of theaters with food service, beer, and reclining seats make all the difference. If I had to go to a regular theater again I suppose I would just stay home, too.

The last thing they say on the movie screen before the movie starts is to turn off your cell phones and not to use them during the movie.
I have no tolerance for people who use their cell phone in the theater. I will get up and tap them on the shoulder and very sternly command them to stop. In a soft voice. I am 6'2" 240 lbs and no one has ever questioned me. I love going to the movies and I'm not about to let some shmuck ruin it for me.

As a film buff I'll start with the opinion most films released don't need the large screen. I'd argue that since the secondary market is where the larger revenues come from, and even with vastly improved home screens, the big screen effect isn't needed.
Now obviously there are still a few that take full advantage of the large screen but the majority don't. Add in an added apprehension/awareness level in the wake of the Aurora theater shooting-not terribly far from where I live-as well as the same behavior mentioned earlier I see fewer films in the theater now than I used to.

We seldom go to the movies. Last one was American Sniper. The theater crowd in Las Cruces was very solemn throughout the movie. I was impressed. That has not been our experience very many times and the loudmouths have just about ruined theaters.
