Words my Dad lived by.
My dad had a wall sign in the office of his automotive shop. I would see it every day during the time I worked for him. I recently discovered the sign in some articles that I had stored after he passed away. It now hangs on my wall, and like him, I believe that these are good words to live by.

My dad (step father) used to say "there is nothing more important than family". Words to live by for sure.

I remember once there was an older black woman in our town who worked as a lunch lady at my school. She had car problems but no money to pay for expensive auto repairs. My dad fixed her car and refused to take a dime from her. I swear, after that it seemed like I would get extra helpings at school lunch.
My dad, rest his soul, had a way of making people feel special, including his own family.

My old Daddy once told me "You can never tell the depth of a well by the length of the handle on the pump."

Whenever I'd be having a bad time with something, frustration and anger building, the old man would ask in a calm, collected voice, "Gonna let it whip ya?" That put everything back in perspective. I'd take a deep breath or two, get back at it and finish the job. Dad's been gone since '95, but there isn't a day I don't think of him.

My late father's sign read:
1. You can have it fast.
2. You can have it cheap.
3. You can have it right.
YOU ONLY GET TO PICK 2...

Lots of good posts in this thread. I lost my dad in 1981 but he's still an inspiration to me at times.

Well, my Dad had quite a few words to live by and some of them were a little on the, deep/harsh, side. One of the first ones that I remember understanding was, learn how to scratch your *** without tearing out chunks of meat, meaning, enjoy something without going to extremes as with drinking and a few other things. I think about him often.
Peace,
gordon

One of my favorites was "Son, I may be dumb but I'm NOT stupid" My dad was a mechanic all his life and the other one I treasured was " I have never met a mechanic, no matter how great or small his skills were that I couldn't learn something from or teach something to."

One of my Dad's old saws, that I find quite true -
'If you think you have a problem, and the problem can be solved with money, it's not really a real problem'.

Today would've been Dad's 77th birthday, so this topic is very timely for me. He passed away last March 20th, just before my birthday. He had lots of sayings, one of my favorites was "someday you get the bear, somedays the bear gets you, but you have to go out every day and face the bear".
Another classic was telling people, as a joke of sorts, that I worked as a garbage man. He was never a fan of my going into law enforcement, but he was always supportive of my choice. When I would ask why he described me as a garbage man he would reply "well, don't you handle garbage every day?". I had to admit he had a good point. He was also Township Supervisor in his final few years, and would always tell residents "remember, I work for you".
One thing he would never say was "goodbye". NEVER. He said "goodbye" was final, so instead he stuck with "see ya". Since I do expect to see him again on the other side I closed his eulogy with "see ya later chief".

Why do we get so soon old & so so slow smart?
For starters, my dad didn't start a family until late in life. He had lived a good deal before I came along.
As all kids, I tried all the scams, such as "but all the other kids got, or get to". His answer was "other people rob banks, don't mean it's all right for me".
My dad was the first in our neighborhood to offer help to a hobo. This was the late '40s & following the WWII. He would tell Mom, the last war, I was in the same boat. (meaning he had a hard time following his WWI service).
My dad passed in 1956 when I was 15 & BOY do I still miss him! I still remember him saying " If you did your best, no man can ask for anything more"
