Default The Sky is Falling or is it just the weathermen around here?

Front is going to come through here tonight and the weathermen are Bla Bla Bla slight possibility tornado. Be prepared Bla Bla Bla. We live in the south and with any front that comes through there is a slight possibility of a tornado, Always has been, always will be.
These folks can't get tomorrows forecast right so I do not see why they run around like chicken little. Do we just have an upcoming generation of unconscious folks that cannot reason for themselves? Half of the forecasts are promoting their station's weather app where folks don't have to look outside to see what the weather is doing.
Sorry for the rant guys and gals, but I'm getting to the point that watching the news for the weather isn't even worth it. Larry

Yeah, they're doing a marathon forecast here right now. Some people in the vast area they cover may see dime-sized hail. I'll probably miss the regular news and the Extra entertainment show.

I think most TV people have vast egos, and they probably see this as a way to do their peacock strut.

They need to keep the ratings up in order to keep the ad revenue up in order to earn their paychecks. My favorite was one local ding dong that would bait you at the start of the news with a little blurb regarding an incoming storm and then end it with "How much snow are we going to get? Stay tuned and I'll let you know." Then you were expected to listen to their 25 minutes of propaganda to find out. I get my weather online now. Not any more accurate but a lot less advertisements and BS.

With supposedly trained meterologists and super mega warp powered doppler radar of death and they are even less accurate now than when they just had someone who read the forecast from NOAA in the first place.
I no longer get my weather forecasts from TV charlatains. I go straight to the NOAA website and get it there. Pretty accurate, too, even though meterology is really little more than alchemy.
TV news is about entertainment and nothing more. I have seen far too much time spent on absolute dreck (why would anyone sane want a recap of The Bachelor from the night before...with live team coverage no less).
Every weather situation is a catastrophe in the making...screaming wolf. Eventually, no one will pay any attention and a real situation will occur that will be a catastrophe and people will get hurt in the least. The media will not care either way.

TV weathercaster is the ultimate job-you can be wrong all the time and never loose your job. Admittedly in some sections of the country it's a waste to even try to figure out what the weather is going to do but the stations/networks still figure it's worth having a scapegoat on staff .

And of course the weather in some places never changes much so viewers benefit from having someone else tell them what it's like outside.

I had a good friend back in the late 70s/early 80s that was a weatherman at a tv station in Tucson (he was a hard core gun guy too). One year on April 1 he teased his report by saying his boss told him no April Fool jokes, he called the boss a grump and said if the viewers wanted to know what the weather was going to be like to go look out the window. It's was priceless. Of course that was his April Fool joke.

As I like to say-never have so few been paid so much to be so wrong.

At least they have the right idea about TV meteorologists south of the border.

Ya, Alabama has 3 forecasts. Sunny, Chance of snow flurries, and chance of tornadoes.....

I believe after April 15 and April 27 2011 made folks real gunshy about not mentioning the twisters.

They sure do measure things differently down there.

Mexicans only watch the weather for the weather-girl. To a Mexican, the weather is God's work. If a pretty girl wants to try to predict it, that's fine but she'd best be good looking because she's still only trying to predict God's work.

Sort of like when Daylight Savings Time was first introduced down here (as a part of the NAFTA agreement of all things). Many of the poor Mexicans didn't adapt to it well and started referring to time as "Real Time" and "God's Time". God's time was the time it would have been without the imposed change.

I know. It sounds corny. But it's true.

Almost all of the weathermen and women on our local stations lose me when they start the elbow flap move. I get to watching that and I can't remember what they said. Some of them actually look like they are getting ready to fly away and pump both elbows. I have been to meetings where the big boss was giving a lecture and pumping the elbows. The sure sign of a know it all in my opinion. I don't take them seriously after the elbow pump/flap. Has anyone else ever noticed that?
Peace
Gordon

George Carlin: "Now if you'll look at the weather map....uh...you'll see that we don't have one. So I want you to picture last night's map in your mind. Remember how that large Canadian low -- which is not to be confused with a Mexican high...ha, ha..."

back in the 1950's in the USAF I flew All Weather Interceptors. We got daily detailed briefings from the "Weather Guessers" and they did the best they could but many a forecast was blown. Now years later with Doppler radar and satellites they can't get it right for 2 days, but almost every forecast predicts panic weather ahead. It scares hell out of my wife who is always afraid to make plans.I fwould rather just watch Wooly Caterpillar's.

Hmmm; not sure what to say. Things seem to be far different in these parts than what most of you fellows are describing. The forecasts on area stations here are top notch. I recall watching local/area forecasts from the time I was a kid, and there is no comparison to what they're able to do now, with Doppler radar, computer models, and so forth. Rainfall predictions are usually within a couple tenths, even several days in advance. Clouds and sun -virtually right on the money. High and low temperature predictions are nearly always within 2-3 degrees. It's been several years since the last time they made an obvious error, and that was with a snowfall amount -and those are notoriously difficult to predict.

Around 5 or 6 years ago we had an unusually active tornado season for 3 straight weeks as I recall. With their radar and maps they kept us informed where every one of those things were forming, right down to intersections of country roads. And they stayed on the air for hours if necessary, until the danger was past. No hype either; just the facts. My hat was off to them.

I'm aware of the 'chicken little' pronouncements which seem to invite the scorn of viewers; in my experience that occurs more often in larger markets than we have here. Maybe more competition tends to breed that type of reporting -I don't know.

Andy

P.S. The Mexican meteorologist has to be grossly underpaid. She's been wearing that dress since she was 13, and still can't afford to replace it with one in her size.

How do you know that she's not 13?
