I go to cook a couple eggs and have to dig out the pan I want from a half dozen other pans. Then I try to slice a tomato and end up crushing the dang thing rather than slicing it. Hmmmm....

So the wife arrives home after running some errands and I ask her (in a whining negative tone) why do we have a bunch of junk pans and knives that don't cut? In less than a heartbeat she replies - I'll fix that, dear. All of a sudden I get that familiar sick feeling in the pit of my stomach that I said something really stupid. I quickly change the subject hoping that it gets forgotten.

A couple weeks later we're pulling in the driveway and I see a box at the front door. I ask the wife, did you order anything? She says yes. Hopefully it's the knives I ordered from Germany. I don't think the pans made in France have shipped yet.

Be careful boys... be very careful.

get yourself an old "griswold" cast iron #8 pan. you'll never use anything else. the knives? just use what she gets from germany.

If the label on the box for the French made pots and pans says "Le Creuset", you might have to sell your house to pay for them! Quality stuff though.

Ha! I'm smiling but I feel your pain. Wife just went on a new pan set spree as well. Kitchen Aide. I have to admit they are nice.

I told her the meals have been much better since she got them. Doc says I'll be released to go home next week.

From my own personal experience(s), I have been in this same situation many times. It has become riskier the longer that we have been married - they can have a really mean streak sometimes.

I am sure glad that Lorena Bobbitt is not doing "contract work" or the results for me could be a lot more painful!!!!

I just mean that knife-sharpening, while a household chore, is (in my experience - which may not be universal) typically one ascribed to the gentleman of the house. Accordingly, I was surprised that you were surprised to find the knives were dull.

I've always been the cook in my house. I don't even allow my wife to microwave popcorn for fear of a house fire (I kid - she's not that bad). Back in the early 90's I bought a set of nice Calphalon commercial pans. The "good" hard-anodized ones. Cost a few hundred.

When my son was born in '96, my pharmacist wife went part time to care for him while he was little. When he started eating big people food, she fixed him a fried egg everyday. He liked them cooked hard - not runny. As I readied myself for work, I would sometimes hear the "pop" sound from the edge of a teaspoon striking the bottom of the pan when she put butter in it to fry his egg.

One day, to my horror, I noticed more dents than I could count in the bottom of the pan she used everyday. Through the months, she had peppered the bottom of one of my pans with SPOON DENTS! I got all over her. MY PAN! YOU RUINED MY PAN! Oh well... at least she only ruined the one pan. I got over it.

So it's 2016 and my now 20 year old son is still living with us while he goes to college and he'll be leaving the nest in two or three years.

That pan? The one with the bottom speckled from the all the spoon-edge dents? I wouldn't trade it for the world... each little dent representing a breakfast for our now-grown son when he was still a little diaper-wearing toddler.

Good memories. *sniff*

Phil, it's really weird: it's just this one thing. I'm really pretty on the ball about social stuff, but (often) when people pull my leg with a straight face, I take them seriously. At least know (almost 50!) I've figured out that it's something to look out for. "Hey, wait a minute . . . could they be joking about the Space Shuttle landing on the freeway?!"

I have some old Le Creuset. Great pans and they'll be heirlooms. I don't let the wife anywhere near my cast iron, and especially my carbon steel kitchen knives.

Yeah, I've walked into that one more times than I can count.

The knives we use in the kitchen for everyday stuff are cheap serrated utility knives. Toss em in the dishwasher after use and toss em in the trash when dull. Seemed like a pretty good system to me. Now I'm the proud owner of kitchen knives that are forged, ice hardened, laser measured cutting angles...blah... blah...blah... by some fraulein in Germany. The wife tells me that I must now hand wash and dry after each use, ditto for the new pans. Sharpen? The dang instructions (Oh yeah, like I need to read an owners manual to cut a tomato... ) says that the serrated knives should be sent to a professional to sharpen or replaced. There's no telling what this cost me cuz the wife already told me I don't want to know before I asked. All because I got a BIG MOUTH. Ever watch the Honeymooners?

ps The only hedge I got has grown so wide that I can no longer reach across it so I have to pay someone to keep it neat.

You guys are gonna laugh, but, about 51 years ago we bought a set of Saladmaster pots and pans----and still got em' all. Not only that, they were still replacing the handles etc. for free, last time we needed some.
We lost or gave away our salad master machine, and were without one for a time, but, last Christmas, my wife had one on her Christmas list, and Santa brought it
I even still have the Saladmaster hunting knife they gave as a premium.
The only other pots and pans we use are 3 various sized cast iron frying pans and a CI cornbread pan. Sometimes, old things are good things.

After 40 plus years you learn when to just say nothing.

Where I used to work I was the duty knife sharpener. So before Thanksgiving and Christmas on the off watches I sharpened knives. Butcher, carvers, you name it. Most of the time the knives were of good quality steel and with a little work would sharpen up nice. We had one old Italian foreman who shows up with a plastic bucket of all sorts of knives. Not one complete set amongst them. This guy had so much money he paid in quarterly installments. Managed to get about half of them nice and sharp. He asked what about the rest?, told him they were cheap and wouldn't take a good edge. Grabbed the bucket and out the door. Frank

Phil, look at it this way, good cookware and knives are like fine handguns they are a life time investment. And ya get what you pay for.

Yes they are. I bought a set of them last year and love them. I have to be careful handling them as I take a blood thinner and am always nicking or cutting myself on them when washing them or sometimes when cutting up veggies or whatever.

Are those cast iron? Look very nice.

Yeah, that's what they are. I made the mistake of looking this one up which is probably the only one I'll use anyway. On "sale" it's $80! I got a knife block full of this stuff.

Cast iron / Enamel Fired Finish.. It's like cooking with cast iron pot/pans.. but easy clean up,and you don't have to worry about " seasoning"
It took me MANY years to become a believer.. but the stuff works.. as advertised.. Much like LODGE cast iron.. the grandkids will be able to use the stuff for years.

Oh yeah.. it helps to have an outlet store near by

I go into the kitchen knowing my knives are dull!

And if my wife says I don't want to know what she paid for something, I leave it at that!

Phil, when you need to sharpen that serrated knife you can do it with a ceramic rod . Just a few strokes in each of those scallops will have it razor sharp again in no time. That's how I do mine.

After almost 25 years, I have learned to never say anything if I can avoid it. You never know how much it will cost. If I say something favorable about something she wants, before you know it, I will have one or a dozen.

i finally had to tell mrs. bagga to stop buying gadgets. it has worked so far. the gadgets would be used a couple of times then they would sit in the closet or a drawer later to be tossed because the were broke, lost parts for them or they were just pieces of ****. most of the junk comes from QVC, when one of their boxes shows up on the porch i just shudder wondering what did she buy this time?

Be careful when they have too much free time on their hands too, when it comes to shopping.

Out of nowhere my wife goes, ya I think i'm going to be ordering a Tiffany & Co. decanter set for your office....

In thinking about this more, do not ever talk to the wife about buying anything for the kitchen. This is like gun collecting for them. KitchenAide mixers, gadgets to peel this or store that.

I remember when i was a bachelor, I had a few good knives, couple cast iron pans, and my wife (then girlfriend at the time) thought I was barbaric. Now, I don't even know what half the tools are actually used for...but I better put them away in the correct spot!

A while back the wife griped why she's always the one who unloads the dishwasher. I said ok babe, I'll get right on that. After she couldn't find anything in the kitchen she told me not to unload the dishwasher anymore.

See all these things are role testing exercises. When we gripe about what the other does or does not do, we're quickly reminded why things are the way they are. My last reminder was a little pricey.

one day i just happen to be by the clothes dryer. she calls from the kitchen, " can you start the dryer"? i look at all the different dials on it and thought, "what do i do with the dials"? so i said to her, "how do i do this"? i got yelled at for being "stupid" and "a big baby". the lesson here is, stay away from those household machines

C-Phil and Bagga know once we do a job / favor it's ours for life. Foul up just enough so it's easier for the wife to do it herself. My wife and I are pretty good with the current state of the distribution of labor.

That was a rookie, self-inflicted mistake. Those types of errors are usually made in the first month of marital bliss.

I'm in the midst of a frame off '37 Chevy coupe project. After the motor arrived via a big truck, I discovered that we needed a master bathroom remodel. (Anyone ever worn out a bathtub?)

The suspension is now done with engine, transmission, etc., done with the shiny stuff attached like disc brakes and some chrome wheels.

It now appears that we are in need of new carpet and kitchen appliances. Who'd a thunk it?
