Well, he is just a few miles away. Sounds like stepdad needs to take him to the range more often. This is how we handle things in Alabama. That thief could be in deep trouble in he comes back again to the kids house.

One of the stories I heard mentioned that this doofus had burglarized this home at least once before . . .

I applaud the young man, especially since his life was allegedly threatened. My biggest problem is that the television station identified the young man by name, and his family, exposing them to threats and retribution.

Heck 'round here firearms ARE left out for the kids for shooting and defense. Responsible kids are far more prevalent than one would realize.

That kid is my new hero.

I agree with you 100%, but in this day and age, the criminal can sue and collect because the danger had passed and juries will award him with a settlement. It's sad and makes me angry, but it's what we've come to.

You know, in about 95% of these cases, it's not the jury, it's the insurance company tasked with defending the homeowner. The actuary says it will cost $X to settle and $X to defend, and we're settling, regardless of what the policy holder wants. Happens all the time in LE use of force suits.

The burglar may have been retreating when shot, but was an 11 year-old supposed to be clairvoyant enough to know whether the burglar was going to return in a minute to do to the kid what he said he'd do? (Someone should get the kid a 20 ga. pump to use until he gets a little older!)

I don't think any part of the country is going to put an 11 year old in jail for shooting a burglar. He's a child and afraid for his life. I want to see a jury convict that and I'd like to see a prosecutor keep his job after the outcry

A 3000' down the road from our farm house, city people build a new home. On a weekday, a 12 year old boy was home "sick", burglars (23 year old man and his girl adult friend) broke in and when discovered threatened the boy with slow murder, then drove off into next township, where the 911 call had alerted the police. The burglars were glad to be in police custody when the father showed up to show them what he thought of them threatening his son. One of the township officers told me they thought of releasing the male burglar into the father's custody, but decided the probable paper work would be a real killer! ( had the burglars threatened a 12 year old girl, they probably would have turn him over to the dad!) That was 23 years ago, and there hasn't been a break within 3 miles of that house since then!

Agreed - the kid likely won't be in trouble. But somewhere there's a lawyer scheming to sell the wounded burglar on the notion of suing the kid's parents.

There would be no trouble for the boy in my area of Tejas either.

Same here including many from new York and new jersey. Many move to Austin--whos nickname is, The Music Capitol of the World, then they complain about the noise.

No self respecting Alabama judge is going to do anything except tell the boy well done.

Back in November 2 men with long rap sheets broke in a home where a frightened 13 year old grabbed his mothers pistol and A Gunfight Ensued.The kid put 3 rounds in one and a few rounds in the car after he fled with the other dude.He dropped him off at the hospital where he was pronounced dead(never to break the law again).The other dude was later arrested.The heroic kid was not hit by return fire.He should be rewarded

There is no doubt that happens a lot, but I just heard of a case much like this one in which the jury awarded the perp $100,000. Either way, it stinks.

Someone should inform said felon that if he sues, it wouldn't be in his best interest.

The locals will insure that the kid and his family will get off, one way or another. Repercussions can be harsh in rural areas.

That kid reminds me of Bobby Hill, from King of the Hill. I say give him a gold star ...and maybe a .38 with a box of wadcutters.
