Watch your step in the woods! Nearly tripped over this guy.
Was out turkey hunting about a week ago, heading to my favorite spot and nearly tripped over this guy. Had time to take one cam pic and then retreat. I know mom wasn't far...

There's a good reason to hurry ! When I was a kid, my friend's Dad was fishing a little creek in a meadow. He came across a fawn laying in the grass (like this one), he bent down to look at it and when he woke up he was beaten and bruised and his clothes were torn. Apparently, Mom was watching and did a dance on him.

If you leave too much human scent, Mamma won't come back and will abandon Jr.

You are at least a month ahead of us (Tennessee). Here the 'does' don't start dropping fawns till late May through June on average.
I agree with Iggy...if you hang around and leave too much scent the momma may abandon the fawn.

Last spring my daughter called me and said there was a newborn fawn in her back yard and wanted to know who to call to rescue it. She lives two doors down from me. I told her the fawn did not need rescued and that mom was nearby. Later, towards evening mom showed up.
A couple of days later I was working in my back yard and the fawn was lying in some plants. I didn't know it was there and I got pretty close to it before it jumped up and ran away. Startled the heck out of me.
The fawn hung around for a few more days, going between 3 or 4 neighbors back yards before mom took her away. Hope another one shows up.

back in 86 while stationed in NE I got a new lab pup in early may. about a month later I was running her in a large field near the house that was close to the MO river. she was in the edge of the woods and jumped a fawn. she went one way and the fawn the other, both at a high rate of speed. momma came a running after my pup and we both retreated to the house. she wouldn't get near that woods for months. lee

Me too! I almost didn't open the thread figuring a big ole fat copperhead or rattler was going to be on my screen! I'm glad my curiosity won. Cute little bugger.

The weather has been so mixed here this year the wildlife doesn't know what to do... Turkeys are just now doing what they usually do a month ago...

I also was expecting a snake because I have killed two in the last week. I had walked right past one that then slithered up into a tree and the other was just a few feet from my lawn chair.
Yes let Bambi be because it will most likely not live captive and yes momma will show just how much damage her hoofs can do to humans bothering her fawn.

Was surveying a abandon farm property one time. Owners lived out of state. I had a kid right out of Hi school as summer help
to cut brush. We came on a doe that was stuck in a fence/ tree.
One of those deals with 3 saplings coming off one stump with
Barb wire tacked right to tree. Doe looked to be in fairly good
shape. I decided that we should take a section of range pole
stick in front of her back legs and flip her out of fence. Kid called
the rest of us sissies and proceeded to grab it's back legs. That
doe kicked him so many times we couldn't count in seconds. It
tore him up pretty good. Us sissies used pole method and flipped
her out, she hit the ground running, never said thanks.

Looking at the photo it appears that the head is triangular shaped ala venemous, no?

Nope he just does that to try and fool you. He was puffing up his neck. They will also shake their tails in the grass to mimic rattles.
If you go out of your way to provoke them and they have absolutely no other way out they'll bite but they are NOT VENOMOUS.
I put my foot down right next to him more times than I can count and he "ran" every time

We have some crazy weather in SC and often see what we call a "staggered rut". Consequently,I've seen fawns dropped anywhere from March to late August.

We had the pleasure of watching this young beauty grow over the summer a couple years ago. We first saw it just a couple feet off of our lawn in our woods. The other shots were taken from my kitchen slider.

I couple of years ago, my brother and I were going out to eat one evening, and when I went around a curve, we spotted a fawn that had been hit by a car. We stopped and checked it and it was still hot. We took it back to his house where my nephew dressed it. The next day we had Bambi back strap and biscuits for breakfast.

Deer are more than a nuisance:
On the road deer are a danger to human life and property
In the forest and backyard deer are a vector for Lyme disease
In the flower bed deer are like self-propelled lawnmowers spraying Agent Orange for good measure
But every time I see one I am mesmerized by their grace and power. When the animals stood in line to receive their share of beauty, the deer must have gone back for a second helping.

I tripped over one yesterday. Scared something awful when it started to run off. Thought it was a giant rabbit then I saw the spots.

This picture never gets old nor fails to give me shivers.
