Default Smart Gun Technology on the way

I did not know that some states had a poison pill in their gun laws that mandated smart gun technology when it became available......
Gun maker wants industry to give 'smart guns' a shot | NOLA.com
Also didn't know that Mossburg was a "premium" shotgun manufacturer either

One of the quotes is from a professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, a well known independent voice in the gun control debate.

Not sure of law now. But for awhile New Jersey had a law on the books that said, in the future, when smart gun technology gets certified by the state Attorney General as a viable technology -- only smart handguns can be sold in New Jersey.

Technology is coming, no question. And through the market place, it will become more reliable, and acceptable, over time. But with >300M firearms in this country, it's going to take a long time to make the difference that the anti-gun supporters want.
Unless they mandate reto-fitting of existing firearms.
Hmm..... Wonder how the mod would work on my 1862 Colt 44?

Default SIM Card and USB Charging Port

Just what I need for my SD piece! A gun with batteries, A charging port, SIM Card , APP reader, and who knows what else!
I pity the poor guy who has a dead battery when he encounters a BG braking in to his home!

So Mr Mossberg thinks a person should have to be wearing a ring for a gun to work?

How does this wonderful solution work in practical application? A lot of guys keep several guns in the home in different rooms. Thats a lot of rings to be wearing all the time.

Theft? I've got quite a few guns. The only way to keep track of which ring goes with what gun would be to keep them together. So if the gun is stolen the ring will be with it.

Or will there be a master ring for all my guns... so when the ring is lost none of my guns will work for months until all the paperwork is processed to get a replacement ring?

Dear Mr Mossberg, I don't wear jewelry. I don't even wear my wedding ring, and sure as heck ain't going to start wearing your line of Mossberg jewelry. No thanks.

Will the police have an override technology capable of turning off the gun? The original purpose of the 2A was to provide the people with power to counteract the federal govt. This would be an example of irony, as is the federal insistence on modifying the 2A and controlling guns.

Jonathan Mossberg is obviously no friend to the 2A and is just looking to get rich(er). I'd continue with my thoughts, but I don't want to get banned.

There are some good things that could come from this.

Anti-gun hoplophobes will be totally freaking at the sight of people wearing any kind of rings for fear that they have a gun.

Oh my god... they're all wearing rings... HELP!!

Been around for a while,
Gun Safety Add-ons, Smart Guns, Magna-Trigger

Discussed here in 2012,

S&W 66 with ring safety lock, Smart Gun?

Ever wonder why S&W did not jump on this technology back then when they were locking up their revolvers for 'da' govmt ? Could it be $$$$, no way, we know everyone is out to help us, cause they from da govmt!!!

In the strange, closed-mind world of the anti-gun moonbats, no one should be able to own multiple guns. In fact, ideally you shouldn't be able to own any guns at all. But maybe you can have one provided it is a "smart" gun so they can control it (or more correctly, you and it).

The concept of owning more than one gun is completely foreign to them... it does not compute... so the problem you describe does not exist nor does it need to be solved in their perfect Utopian world!

End of story.

Smart gun technology sounds great on the surface, but it doesn't sound so good when you start looking closely. I have the iPhone which I love but I'll be the first to point out that if my finger gets wet, it won't accept my fingerprint. I still love the idea and my iPhone even if it takes a couple of seconds to get the iPhone to accept my fingerprint. If I reach for my gun, I may need it right now, not in a couple of seconds.
I don't wear rings either. One ring per gun? How would I even begin to keep track of what gun goes with what ring? Maybe a bracelet? I don't wear those either! I know, program the bracelet to work with all my guns cause we know that people never hack into our pc's!
Why not spend all that money and time into better gun education instead of wasting it on smart gun tech nobody wants!

IMHO, just another stupid idea formed by people who don't think through the whole idea/process.

So many points brought up by forum members. I believe these anti-gun folks never think that there are many of us who collect firearms for their functionality and beauty.

Maybe we should be thinking "rings on our fingers and rings on our toes so we can go shooting wherever we go"

JUST PLAIN DUMB IDEA!

My guns are lazy and dumb, they just lay there doing nothing until I force them to get up and get with it. I don't want a gun that can think for its self.

This most recent; "newest", "greatest", "most wonderful gun idea", closely parallels the efforts of Colt's Mfgr. in the late nineties.

That company; (1998 or so) in it's never ending downward spiral from it's once lofty perch, was bought out by a fellow named Donald Zilkha.

Paid 27 million he did; and promptly alienated all the other gun manufacturers he came in contact with, by his pursuit of "safe gun" technology.(Among other ideas.)

By the way; Mr Zilkha backed up his business scheme by NOT ever having OWNED; nor shot a gun at that time !

INDIVIDUALS, not fond of his idea, presented one objection to the scheme; but the fact of finding NO police department willing to come forward and advocate this idea more or less brought an end to the foolishness.

The final, almost laughable demonstration, covered with great fan-fare by the Wall Street journal no less; brought out one of the special hand guns to show one and all, just how great they would be for the police.

I was not present that day;(of course none of my friends have 27 mil); but from all the accounts I have ever heard or read about; after nearly an hour of trying, the gun had still not been made to fire even one shot.

So;....here we are, eighteen years later moving on to "plan B".

I still find myself amazed that an inanimate lump of steel, and or plastic, is held in such high esteem by some; as to be in possession of evil traits; and with no help atall from a nut behind the trigger, will suddenly launch itself into a shooting, killing, rage.

Following that logic, I suppose the gun must also be in possession of a conscience, a heart and soul, feel anger, and get "pissed" when it misses an intended target ?

The good folks who put together the great Webster's dictionary must be rolling in their grave over how this country has desecrated the term; "common-sense".

looks like I've bought my last Mossberg....perhaps old Jonathon Mossberg should have asked the fat blonde of the Dixie Chicks , Liam N. and that idiot country singer that Bloomberg conned...about ticking off both gun owners & country boys before he adopted this hare brained idea...

So when the moment of truth happens and the smart gun technology fails who does the victim or family of the victim get to sue?

The government?
The manufacturer?
The adversary?
No one?

They had Mossberg on one of the Sunday morning "Talking head" shows. He stated he supported the development of the technology but was adamantly against any legislative mandate(s). Likened it to "gun locks", you can buy them if you want and don't if you don't want them. I sure as heck ain't buying one. I got a drawer full of "cable gun locks" that I don't use but they were included in the purchase. I would give them to anyone who wants one but nobody does. Joe

You guys do know Jonathan Mossberg does not work for the Mossberg company (O. F. Mossberg & Sons, Inc.) that actually makes Mossberg shotguns and rifles, right? Jonathan Mossberg's "smart" firearm is from a company called iGun Technology Corp. According to Linkedin he hasn't worked for O. F. Mossberg & Sons, Inc. since January 2000.

Just what the world needs, a gun that thinks it's a computer. Or is it a computer that thinks it's a gun? Either way, I don't want a gun with an identity crisis.

You ever have to go to a car dealer to replace a key or get another key reprogrammed?

Anyone else see where I'm going with this?

I have been considering a new shotgun lately. While I prefer Ithaca, they are hard to come by, so I have been considering a new 870 or 500 or 590. This article has made go with the 870 on principle. So long Mossberg, I hope the Robertson clan drops them as well!

"Smart Gun"(?) ideas:

Fingerprint recognition? Two different toaster-oven sized fingerprint readers could not read my fingerprints when I was applying for my license to carry, so that technology is a no-go as far as I'm concerned. And don't wear gloves.

RFID "keyless ignition"? Potentially hackable or jammable.

Voiceprint recognition? Does your voice change under stress, and will your trigger's Siri recognize it if it does?

DNA recognition? Grip sensors have to read your DNA before you can fire. Just be sure to wipe off your grip before the bad guy gets possession of the gun. And don't wear gloves.

Eyeprint recognition? Take off your sunglasses or eyeglasses, hold your gun up to your eye, then shoot.

Thought recognition? Quick, think of your unique password!

Aura recognition? (Insert Twilight Zone theme here.)

Mossberg just lost what little respect I had for them. Circuit boards and batteries do not belong in firearms. Anyone remember the Remington 700 EtronX VSSF rifle? What a flop and failure that turned out to be.
