I guess it is the same pair of robins that build a nest on my cane poles over the door to my shop every year. got this shot of the babies this morning. they are usually looking up with their mouths open. lee

I feed the birds year round. After a lot of years with nothing like a songbird around here, I'm finally getting some. I don't know if they're considered song birds but I had 8 red wing black birds in the yard this morning. There's nothing like a wetland around here. I'm getting cardinals and singing finches and 3 different kinds of woodpeckers. I never realized it but Robins don't eat seeds, just bugs n worms. (city feller) They usually start a nest on my porch about this time of year. I gave up trying to keep the squirrels and grackles away. I just buy more seed.

I sometimes think Robins aren't all that interested in flying, either.

I'll walk towards them...they'll walk or hop away...I'll keep walking towards them...they'll finally take off, like, "Well, okay, if I have to."

Depends on the robins. Some are used to people, some are very wary.

I miss the call of the Western Meadowlark, one of the many great things about living in western South Dakota.

A few years ago, we had one we named "Psycho Robin". Darn think was po'd at the driver side rear view mirror on my wife's car. It kept attacking the mirror and pooping down the side of the car.

Then there was this one I saw in Canada on our way to Alaska:

I love to watch robins on the lawn, especially in the early morning while goin after worms. They can feel the worms through their feet, get a good sideways eyeball on them and then BAM! breakfast. At the old house we had Mountain Ash trees, every year we had a family nesting in one of the three trees. In the late fall when the berries ripen and eventually ferment the resident robin takes it personally when the early travelling birds stop by to raid the tree. I've actually watched a robin drunk on berries fall out of the tree, get back up and fly back up onto his perch.

I have a female cardinal that used to sit on the window ledge of the bathroom window and look at her reflection, either that or she was a peeping tom . Now she sits on a bush by the front of the garage and looks at herself in a mirror, that is leaning against the front wall of said garage.

I have a pair of Robins that must be vegetarians because they eat the seeds from my feeder daily.

We always have a nest of mockingbirds in a shrub in my backyard. When it is there, I can expect to be harassed when I am in the backyard. This year, I took a few photos.

I've had 15/16 robins in the front yard sometimes.
Must be some good soil for worms, they do pull them out....

Heck it didn't seem like the robins even left here last winter. Well I guess they were gone the whole month we had snow on the ground. Grackles are showing up now..Shotgun time. But we have a couple of Stellar's Jays hanging around. First time they've been here. Cocky suckers. Bad tempered in a funny kinda way. The magpies have to be dissuaded about hanging around as they kill young birds in the nest..including robins. Not real nice birds. But they are pretty.

We have a "bird book" that we keep on the porch,,,
We look up the name of each new bird we see on the birdfeeder,
the name of each bird we identify is written in the back.

We are up to about 40 names, after about 5 years.

We happened to add one this past Wednesday,
a Rose-breasted Grosbeak,,,

That bird sings incessantly!!

I hope it sticks around,,,

a couple of weeks ago we had a visit from a small flock of Cedar Wax Wings. they stayed pretty far away, so I didn`t get very good photos. They are sure pretty birds!

Waxwings are the guys that used to descend on my mountain ash trees, they would drop by on their way South, the resident robin would hang around until the last moment until leaving for warmer climes. I don't ever recall seeing robins during winter, I do know that after mating season many birds get rather quiet.

Really? My eyes are deceiving me.

Stay away from their nest, otherwise you will be attacked.

Last year we had a threesome of doves in a nest. Their eggs never hatched and probably a cat killed one because we found it's remains in the driveway. This year the pair found another to join them so the dove threesome is at it again. They are not the brightest of birds but they are sweet. It would be nice to have some baby birds by the front door. Earlier this year we had hawk babies wake us up at the crack of dawn every day for a few weeks. Never saw the nest but they were close!

When I was a kid, we had some trees that had little berries on them. I can not remember the type of tree. Every year when the berries were abundant, the Cedar Wax Wings would show up in droves and eat the berries and poop all over the ground under the trees.
