Only 6 shots!
Signs of the times:
I was doing some trading at my local gun club for a pre-Model 18 and a fellow member maybe 30 years old asks what I'm doing.
Trading for the .22, I say.
Is that one of those 10 shot guns? he asks
No, six, I reply.
Only six! he says in disbelief and shakes his head.
I continued talking with the manager and the fellow member returned to fondling a fantastic plastic.
I'm sure he will remain befuddled for a long time to come.

I guess I found it personally amusing because the revolver is a .22.
Arik, is that OK with you?

I'd be in more disbelief that it was a 22 then a 6 shot!

I guess the point of my posting was muddled, that finding a classic pre-18 .22 is a rather nice thing but some younger people only see things in terms of fire power, not the intrinsic goodness of the older guns of a bygone age.
Some posters immediately started defending their J-frames and others decided, apparently, that I was trying to start a revolver vs. auto debate, which I was not.
I was surprised that no one commented on the fact that an old classic, more than 60 years old, was the real subject. I remember when the pre-18 or Model 18 was a grail gun for many Smith admirers.

I can buy that with the new metallurgy you now have seven and eight shot centerfire revolvers while that would have been impossible even thirty years ago,but when I think of it with the old H&R nine shot .22 revolvers it's a bit odd we only ever had everybody switching to that the last ten or so years with their .22 revolvers.
A six shot revolver in .22 seems a huge waste of material, the old S&W is a nice catch if that's your thing but really it IS odd when you come right down and think of it.

Not odd at all....6 shots was the standard in rimfires and center fire revolvers for years....My 17's & 18's will always be loved, nurtured and shot. I also have a 4" 617 and it really has no real advantage over the others.......Other than being a LOT heavier.

Uncle Ed - I like the classic K-22 over a high cap plastic thing any day. In fact, I have one of the former, but not the latter. I plan to keep it that way.

Too bad the Second Amendment does not apply in New Jersey.

They are out there and sadly reproduce.
Some will never "get it".

I've heard the New York Reload also called the Chicago Reload. Are they the same thing or does it make any difference?

Not true! That theory was disproved recently by an eleven year-old boy in Alabama. His first 11 shots missed and he connected on the 12th shot!

Same can be said for 2 shot Derringers. If 2 can't get the job done, 4 more won't help. Or 5 shot J drame to 6 K frame.

A friend and I compared recent .22 handgun acquisitions at his range a couple of days ago. He's a very practical rancher, who likes revolvers, but is branching out into semi-autos. He just bought a Kel-Tec .22 magnum with a 30-round capacity. He likes it for the extra firepower punch over his Ruger Single Six Convertable revolver. I just purchased a lightly used Mod. 63 Kit Gun built in 1978. I love my stainless steel, light six shooter, and he loves his knew plastic fantastic. Win-Win situation. He got a nice semi auto truck pistol, and I got myself a classic that filled a niche in my small collection of revolvers. BTW: the 63 is very accurate and a hoot for plinking cans. It's going camping.

That's been my experience. And I'm so old that it's apparently affecting my shooting (my shooting buddy says I'm just not shooting enough).

How do you expect to do that fancy spray and pray type shooting if you only have six puny shots? LOL Also what can you do when attacked by 39 or 40 bad guys come at you if you only have six puny shots?
Well I am thinking we need truly extended magazines for our handguns that hold 40 or 50 rounds each. Granted it may make concealment a tad more difficult, but what the heck, you can never have too many rounds in your gun. Right? LOL

my much-beloved 5 screw K 22 has only six chmbers. My equally well liked, all aluminum except for a stainess barrel insert, S&W 317 has eight. I don't think it makes much difference.

Though not a 0.22, I have had a lot of fun when asked by the RO to try out a "combat tupperware" that the young chap along side me cannot hit the target with. This is a set up as I bring along a 0.455 Webley Mk VI and I put a couple of rounds into the target to aim at, then use the "tupperware" to hit the same point. The look on the face of the "youngster" is priceless when he realizes that the revolver I am using is close to a 100 years old. Dave_n
