Peace offering?
I just saw where Russia is testing a new nuclear missile. It's called the "Satan II".
They claim it can penetrate NATO defenses and destroy an area the size of France.
Do you suppose this may be an olive branch from Putin?

Both the US and USSR can destroy the world several times over with current weapons, and there are no defenses anywhere that can stop it.
These weapons all become obsolete and both our countries are constantly developing new ones. This is just part of the continuum of MAD.

A single device that can destroy an area the size of France? Do you know how large France is? No, at our worst, no human has invented anything that destructive yet.

Might be up for debate.
As I understand the technology, it's not about how much material is present. It's a function of what percentage of it is actually put to work.
Russia hands down won that one with the tzar bomb.
Word is they dramatically detuned it before setting the record.
If remotely true, they might actually have the tool for the job.

15 MIRVs of about 750 kt each spread in an optimal pattern probably would not leave much of a flat country similar in size to France habitable by the time you count up the effects of fallout and fires. However, in France itself topography in the South would have a big impact of the effects of the individual bombs.

Tsar Bomba was allegedly 42 MT, a reduced yield version of a Cobalt enhanced device that was never tested or maybe even never built. All the fine work of a man called Sakharov, who then became a Soviet dissident. Yield on one of those babies was thought to be 100-150 MT according to those with physics PhDs.

There is a partially functional high altitude defense system in place over the CONUS in violation of a number of treaties and that you are not supposed to know about. There are several layers to it, meant to work increasingly in conjunction. Poke around open source data for a bit and it is not hard to discern. What the true capabilities are is still a ?

Need to make sure I have plenty of hotdogs, fresh buns, and beer to watch the show.
Why is the world so sick.

I'm amazed to find such erudition of classified nuclear weapons assembled here in this little corner of the internet.

I'm not after witnessing the knowledge here so far.
After all, it is a weapon.

Seeing as how the majority of Russia's exports are oil and gas, it might not be the best idea to blow up France and other customers in Europe. Ya know... just sayin'.

Yeah, you're right, but if they end up owning all of it afterwards that's a moot point.
I would be more concerned about which way the wind was blowing the day I decided to nuke something that size.
One other point they made was that it has a 6,200 mile range.
I wonder why they want us to know that?
I'm not a 'Sky is falling' kind of guy. I'm just bringing it up for discussion because its of interest.

Peace offering of the US Navy.
Just to keep the enemies of the United States on their toes, 4 Ohio-Class ballistic missile subs .......
.... have converted their ICBM tubes to multiple Cruise missile tubes, that can salvo fire 168 cruise missiles per boat.
Just in case a little more deterrence was needed.

I worked with nukes when I was in the Army, and that was some time ago. I can tell you that our capabilities then were incredibly awesome, and I'm sure they are even more technologically advanced today - not only with us, but with other nations as well.
I amuses me when I hear some misguided and/or brain-damaged souls in high places are seriously advocating the the elimination of all nuclear devices. I'm amused and concerned primarily because the fact is one cannot un-ring this bell. To believe otherwise is the height of naivety. That devil has been loose since 1945, and only other devils can prevent employment. This is known as mutually assured destruction. So far no madman (or madwoman) has chosen to ignore its implicit promise of hell on earth. Keep your fingers crossed!

dial a yield
yeah ... its impressive to see how brilliantly engineered these things are. Impressive as much as it is frightening.
I don't know that its necessarily Russias intent to rattle us up with this development as much as it probably is to attempt to appeal to the sanity of ISIS .... good luck with that

So does that makes it just a little more or a little less powerful than a 10mm?

Mutually Assured Destruction is a pretty good deterrent when there's at least a bit of of rationality among the players. Unfortunately... dealing with people who might be in a hurry to get their vestal virgin party going or bragging about daddy's golfing a hole-in-one on every hole.... well... it's no so reassuring.

In the last post, 30% more free means Belgium. Better get your FN Mauser now......
A little 6 mile rock carved out the Gulf of Mexico and a world wide firestorm and perhaps the end of life know at that time.
If A country as large as France goes up the flrames may encompass all Europe. A nuclear war will bring the nuclear winter. The temps will drop only 4-5 degrees and we will have frozen summers.
Better stock up on jars of peanut butter and seed for your 1st garden in about 10 years.
List for armageddon;
all in 10 year supply.
1. Water.
2. Food.
3. Armament, guns, bullets.
4. a couple of bars of soap.
5. Close and trusted friends/relatives.
Things not to pack;
TV Guide
designer clothes
keys to your vette
big screen tv's
Rap CD's
I hope we never hear the nuclear fat lady song.
When my son was about 8 or 9 we were driving past a large saw mill, they had lit several huge sawdust piles to burn them. There was a huge red glow as we got closer. I heard my son snivling in the back. I said why are you crying? He thought the nuclear war started. I do not remind him, he is a tough fella now, Marine did Desert Storm. He is not afraid.
My son when first married did not want to have children, he did not want them to face this kind of tomorrow. He relented and has one great son.
Communist governments live under paranoia constantly, if the next purge or crazed dictator doesn't get you the people might. It is best to keep everyone's focus on their hated enemies who will kill all off them.
Pointing the finger at us keeps the collective finger from pointing to the leaders.
In the US we would never lower our self to cheap trickery, mind control tactics to keep the masses focused on an imaginary enemy. Except for one, weapon control.

There is enough nuclear weapons on one air craft carrier to destroy the world many times over. Without factoring in our submarines and air force. It's dead is dead many times over.
I try to not think about it and live day to day. We do have star wars in place.
Thermal nuclear war, no one wins.

What is really sad is that there are other potential explosions that are more likely to occur in the world today, tomorrow and the future!
