"To be a Virginian, either
by Birth, Marriage, Adoption,
or even on one's Mother's side
is an Introduction to any State
in the Union, a Passport to any

I had this quotation on the door to my room at the regional police academy in Kunduz, Afghanistan. Most Virginians have a deep alliance to the Old Dominion, stronger than most residents of other states. After all, the first permanent English settlement was started in Jamestown in 1607, many of the Founding Fathers were from here and Virginia has produced a ton of US presidents.

We have beachs, mountains and everything in between, except desert. About the only state that comes close in state pride is Texas. Of course, the two most famous Texans, Sam Houston and Stephen F Austin, were both born in Old Virginny.

I was born and raised in Virginia, my family history in Virginia went back to Jamestown. It took me 49 years to get to Texas and now I must say that of the two, I vastly prefer my new state. Texas is awesome!

You're wrong. We have desert.
It's just across the Potomac from D.C.

Well, its at least a wasteland.

A lot of my early life was spent in Virginia. Both my parents are buried there, and my younger brother has lived there all his life.

I was last there in 2011 for my mother's funeral. About time I went back for a visit.

My Paternal Grandmother was born in Norton, VA.

My paternal side came to VA before 1640 from Sandy, Bedfordshire, England. The first to come to the Americas was born in Sandy before 1600.

There was a great Immigration from England between 1620 and 1640. 50,000 people came. 80% paid their way thru indentured service of 5 or 7 years. Once their contract was up many became landowners, business men and farmers. They referred to themselves as settlers.

We have not yet determined how our first ancestor came. There is an 80% chance he worked to pay off the debt or was in the 20% that hit the ground running.

I've been to VA several times, beautiful and varied terrain. I was not close enough to Norton to visit. Maybe someday.

Her father migrated to Eastern KY, she grew up there and met my Grandfather. He was the guard on the wagon train from Norton to West Liberty, KY. He was a tall handsome Kentuckian and had enough of the wilderness in him to attract her she said.

The only states I have lived in are Texas, Louisiana and Virginia - all three of them have good reasons to be proud.

Don't forget Kentucky used to be a Virginia COUNTY!

It was represented in the Virginia legislature by Daniel Boone.

And, if I remember my 4th grade, required (as in mandatory), Virginia history class, Virginia's western boundry, originally, extended to the Pacific Ocean.

Virginia was an important portal for a lot of the South. My family, like so many others, kept moving west from Virginia.

I feel kinship with both Virginia and Tennessee.

Married a native born Texan so if things get too bad maybe she will take me with her when Texas secedes.

I am very proud and grateful to be a North Carolinian and I love my state
, but I have to say Grayson County VA is one the most beautiful places I`ve ever been. I spent a lot of my youth based on a US Navy Destroyer out of Norfolk and the TideWater area isn't too bad either.
I guess I`m happy to have VA as a next-door neighbor.

Default Norton, VA

Model70Hunter,
You should visit Norton and the rest of sw VA. Here is a pic of the view from the overlook going into Norton, looking down into the Powell Valley. The Powell Valley through Wise and Lee Counties, while not as large is every bit as beautiful as the Shenandoah Valley. Norton is the smallest city in VA and the highest elevation.

Default New Mexico

Lived in many states, and enjoyed my time in Va., Tx., and many others!
But have to mention my home state, New Mexico, after all we were having cities long before the rest of the states.
"... This area was occupied for at least several hundred years by indigenous peoples who built villages. The city of Santa Fe, founded by Spanish colonists in 1610, is known as the oldest state capital city in the United States and the oldest city in New Mexico..."
Took us a while to decide on statehood, 1916, as N.M. was waiting on the rest to sort out various troubles and issues! 😙

I was born and reared in North Carolina and I will die here unless I decide to go to Wyoming which is my second favorite state and NC has a lot of history to be proud of. Having said all that I have visited 40 some states and I have to say that the Shenandoah Valley is one of the prettiest places I have seen. Larry

My Mom and Grandmother were both born in a plantation house in Wythe County. I was lucky enough to visit once in the early '70s. During the Great Depression they moved West to accommodate my Grandfather's TB. Thank goodness they picked Wyoming.

Two of my favorite quotes from the movie "Gettysburg" re: Viriginia.

Brigadier General Lewis A. Armistead:
We're all sons of Virginia here. That major out there, commanding the cannon? That's James Deeran, first in his class at West Point, before Virginia seceded. The boy over there, with the color guard? That's private Robert Tyler John. His grandfather was President of the United States! That colonel behind me? That's Colonel William Ailen. Now, his great-grandfather was the Virginian Patrick Henry. It was Patrick Henry who said to your King George III; "Give me liberty, or give me death." There are boys here from Norfolk, Portsmouth, Malhamlet, Long James River. From Charlottsville, Fredericksburg, and the Shenondoah Valley. Mostly, they're all veteran soldiers now, the cowards and shirkers are long gone. Every man here knows his duty! They would make this charge even without an officer to lead them. They know the gravity of the situation, and the metal of their foe! They know, that this days work will be desperate and deadly. They know, that for many of them, this will be their last charge. But not one of them, needs to be told, what is expected of him! They're all willing to make the supreme sacrifice. To achieve victory, here, the crowning victory, and the end of this war. We're all hear, Colonel. You may tell them, when you return to your country, that all Virginia was here this day.

Major General George E. Pickett:
Up, men! And to your posts! And let no man forget today, that you are from Old Virginia!

Well my family was on the Sandy Fork in early 1700s, they were
still there in 1777. This region ended up as West Virginia due to
Union War of Aggression. Family came to Ohio some time in late
1790s.I had relatives that stayed in that area after civil war. They
were still peeved when they weren't in Virginia any more, clear to
their pas sings in early 50s.

That looks like it is near the county seat, Independence, off of US 58. There have been several large punkin patches in Elk Creek, which is on US 21, as well.

Actually, my 5th great grandfather lived in the Roanoke area in the late 1700's, and I'm sure a lot of his descendants are still around there. I didn't know that when I first visited there, but it might explain why I like it so well. It's in my genes!

You know your country Muley . That is exactly where it is.I love to drive my MB Cabriolet up there and shoot photos. It never gets old. I love Elk Creek too.
Do you know about the Pilgrim who has all of that old rusty treasure -tractors and implements etc.along the highway there? That is some photographic stuff, but I`m about half way afraid to stop, might get shot.

Early AM Near the Blue Ridge Pkwy at Orchard Gap. I call this shot "The Misty Meadow". A little more VA beauty.
Its getting about time for Cherry picking at the Levering Orchard. Its about 600 acres of cherry, apple and peach orchards spread along the valley side with beautiful views at every side.
Pick your own cherries 3 in your mouth 1 in the bucket and the owners encourage you to do that.
Clator Lake in the Autumn . I just had to include this pic.

LOML was born at Fort Eustis, but you'd sure never know it.

She's a Texas gal to the core and bleeds Aggie Maroon:-)

Thanks for starting this one Muley! It brings back lots of good memories.

I grew up on a small farm in Lee County, at the far western tip of Virginia and have lived in the Commonwealth for all but 4 of my 62 years. I spent many days canoeing on the Powell and Clinch Rivers and hiking or 4-wheeling on the many trails and fire roads in the area. Southwest Virginia does indeed have many beautiful places. Cumberland Gap, White Rocks north of Ewing, Great Stone Face Rock west of Pennington Gap, High Knob near Norton, Natural Tunnel, and lots more. It's worth a visit if you are in the area.

Nothing can compare with canoeing the south fork of the Shenandoah and bring home the small mouth bass.

I'm a proud hillbilly from Carroll County and spent the first 50 years of my life there until I moved to the South Carolina coast.

Do you know about the Pilgrim who has all of that old rusty treasure -tractors and implements etc.along the highway there? That is some photographic stuff, but I`m about half way afraid to stop, might get shot.

Drove by his place Tuesday. The big garage door was open. Looks like he has mainly Allis-Chambers tractors and Internationals. My tractor is a '49 Ford 8N.

Your "Red Belly" should feel right at home there.

Took a trip over Briarpatch Mountain in Grayson County on Thursday. Saw some of the local residents:

on that you are correct, my family has been here in KY. for 250 years, the original deed for lonesome hollow is a Virginia document

they came to Virginia early in the Scotch-Irish migration, moved here from what is now Lexington Va. the family was instrumental in the development of timber ridge Presbyterian church which is still going strong in Lexington thou a lot different from the log church with a portion of logs left out so the members could defend themselves

this is the same church that was attended by the folks you mentioned its in its 270th year this year
