My wife and I have been with the same insurance company (which shall remain nameless) for about 27 years---since before we were married. My wife had suggested the past year+ I do some shopping around because there has to be better rates out there.
One of my co-workers has a buddy who works at a private insurance/financial firm. He suggested I talk to him blah blah blah. So I faxed over to him my declaration pages for my home and auto insurance.
HOLY COW.....we are switching companies on Friday, saving $2,100/year on auto and almost $900/year on home with significantly better coverage on both.
If anyone here has played around with the idea of shopping around for better rates, it never hurts to try it and see...you might be surprised like I was. I'm just a little sickened thinking how much more money I could have kept in my pocket (and therefore filled my gun safe) if I would have done this 5+ years ago.

Good for you! But, low prices don't always mean great service. Especially with insurance companies. I hope you chose well.

Insurance companies utilize algorithms that track how long you have been a customer and will incrementally raise rates the longer you are a customer. The algorithm predicts that the longer you are a customer the less likely you are to switch companies and will tolerate moderate increases which add up over time.

Know what you mean. Had the same car insurance company for 15 years. No tix and no accidents and my insurance kept going up? No fancy cars added & no underage dependents?
Had 2 other companies quote me rates and showed the estimates to my agent. Let's just say my insurance dropped back down to where it was 5 yrs ago. Agent tried telling me that it wasn't his office - but corporate who kept raising my rates.
1 of the company's that quoted me said that...You've got to read the fine print or insurance companies will overcharge or straight up gouge you, with a smile on their face while doing it.

Kanew'.....I feel pretty good about the new company, did some research and from what I found, should be OK. But, we'll see how good if we ever need to file a claim. Knock on wood, we've only filed one claim in 27 yrs, and that was a couple years ago when our water expansion tank burst and partially flooded our basement.
Flipmeister....I definitely made sure that was taken care of. Thank you for the suggestion!
MCorps...I'm thinking the same thing. Hopefully our good luck being claimless will continue. I'm going to have this guy reevaluate our insurance every couple years.
Warren...our old insurance company was Nationwide.

I'm not sure where you got that number. I just went to their site. It shows $70 for $6,500, which includes the free $2,500 the NRA supplies. $40,000 of coverage costs $469 per year, which is $117.25 per $10K of coverage, plus $20 admin cost.

We had house, 2 cars, and extended liability umbrella with State Farm for about 15 years. At first I felt they were very reasonable, but they kept going up over time. Two years ago wife asked me to look around to be sure they are competitive. Checked AAA and for the whole package they were over $500 a year less.

I had asked State Farm if they would cut me some slack as I was a long time customer. Was told State farm won't negotiate rates. OK, see ya!!

As an independent insurance agent (and agency owner), I would caution anyone about making changes to their coverage. What looks good now, may not be a year from now. Get information from your agent about the rate history of the company. Some companies will come in with a low ball figure to get your business and subsequently find ways to make it not look so good. Also initially quoted premiums have a way of changing after the underwriting process. The performance of the company when you need them and their level of customer service is worth something that you can't necessarily put a price on. You should evaluate your coverage on a regular basis, but be careful.

I've been with my car insurance company for 49 years. No one's been able to touch them for cost, rebates, and service. But I keep looking.

Although I did move this car to a classic car insurance company last year.

Some of the 'save you a bunch' companies ' have a track record of not paying claims.
Have been with USAA since I was a kid.
Not changing now!

I quote shop all my policies at least yearly. I dumped GEICO and Farmer's for another company about two years ago and when I did, both of them suddenly wanted to try and match my new rates. Thanks for nothing, see ya!

I've been with State Farm for probably 25 years now, my rates are pretty low, and they don't jerk you around when you need to file a claim.

A semi backed into me at a stop light several years ago, the other guy's insurance tried to deny they covered the guy. So I contacted State Farm, and they took care of everything, didn't try to browbeat me into using cheap aftermarket parts, etc.

The advantage of staying with them long term: probably about 10 years ago I had an accident (my fault). Since I was a long term customer, my rates did not change at all. Apparently long term customers get a freebie.

We had Geico, and left them after the second time they canceled our car insurance for not paying the bill.
We NEVER got the bill, no call,,, nothing,,, we even asked about that specifically when we went to Geico.
(We have horrible rural mail delivery)

We now have Farm Bureau. The one feature we like is the $million umbrella policy.

I believe that costs about $90 a year. If it isn't covered somewhere else, this covers it, liability wise,,
The salesman said they NEVER pay on that coverage,,, but, they have the BEST lawyers!!

Two thoughts on insurance:

1 - don't insure your guns through your homeowner's policy. Go to someone like Eastern Insurance - Historical Firearms. These companies cover more, have reasonable rates, won't argue over gun value, and your premiums won't increase. I have no affiliation, other than a satisfied customer.

2 - If you file a claim on your homeowner's policy, and it's denied, you are still placed in an industry database, where you will be identified as having filed/made a claim. Another good reason for # 1.

Similar situation with a buddy of mine a couple years ago.

We were shooting the bull and he started fussing about his property tax bill and said how he hated paying it more than his homeowners insurance. When he mentioned how much he was paying for insurance it was close to twice what I pay, and we live in the same county with similar home values. I told him what I was paying and his eyes about bugged out of his head. He later called his insurance carrier. While he was on the phone they slashed his premium close to what I was paying with no change to his policy.

ya got to keep an eye on this stuff...

I followed up on a suggestion from a neighbor a few years back and checked out the auto and homeowners ins through AARP. The rate I was quoted online was almost the same as what I had been paying. I initially thought, "man that's not any savings" then I glanced at the top of the page. I was quoted the premium for a 12 month policy whereas before, I paid that same amount for 6 months. A substantial savings. Needless to say I switched. Over the past few years I found similar quotes but I don't want to change since I get the vanishing deductible and, have found if I call them every year at renewal time, they tend to lower my rate a little.

Unless you live in Florida with a zip code remotely near the water. All the major companies bailed out of HO insurance years ago when we had a series of Hurricanes. They actually had to pay out claims. They do not like that So now you are lucking to get any HO insurance and the deductibles are outrageous, Might as well expect to pay for a new roof out of your own pockets.

They want all homes built to the current building codes, well duh, it can't be as it was built years ago!!!

Then if course good old FEMA bugs you every year on flood insurance (which we have) but you must sign forms and return it to them or the Flood Nazis will come looking for you.

I was a Underwriter up North and the State I lived in the Insurance Commissioner would have never let this fly. If Companies wanted to write Auto, Health Life than they damn well would write HO also. Not just dump 20 year customers and say thanks and good bye!!

I'm with State Farm, and the agent is a friend. He is good about scheduling a meeting every couple of years and going over our plan and saving us even more money. When my daughter had our first grandson I never had to call them, they dropped her price on her car insurance. A couple of weeks ago they called and let me know that my sons College student discount was running out and to summit his grades again to keep the discount going. I'm all for finding the cheapest price but you usually get what you pay for.

You are fortunate. I too had a long time friend as an agent. Since my friend retired I have been just another shopper. It's not so much the company name as they are like banks, all the same, its the agent if they still exist. They are quickly becoming extinct.

My Wife talked Me into going with a different Insurance Company because They were cheaper and She soon learned You get what You pay for.
We had a sewer back up that stopped up the upstairs toilet and flooded the Bathroom and ran down into the Kitchen ruining the Cabinets and ceilings and wall. The Morons the Insurance Co.sent were a joke. They just wanted to dry everything out and when They replaced the Bathroom floor They broke the Brass Toilet Flange and just nailed a cheap steel one to the Floor. Then when I saw Them just butt two pieces of Plywood together without any support under Them I told Them to pack up and get out.
I hired a local Company to do the work and They did a excellent Job,They replaced everything that was needed(kitchen cabinets) Wall Tile both upstairs and down,Repaired the ceiling and replaced the oven vent .They even got the Insurance Company to pay for it all.(I cant wait to get back with the original Company).

Was with State Farm for about 10 years. I moved to a different county and they were going to triple my rates. Switched to Allstate and didn't look back.

Was with Allstate for at least 20 years and no one could beat them. Not even the names you've never heard of with their super low introductory rates was better. However, not everything is about price. I simply got tired of being jerked around and left them for USAA.

Cherry picking. It would be wonderful if folks had a choice and could tell the companies that wont offer HO ins. to go scratch. We're left with state subsidized or complete unknowns to insure our most valuable possession.

Because of AARPs anti gun positions, I won't even consider them.
USAA has been our choice.

I like the "independent insurance company's" because they are local-known in the community, and compare rates with multiple company's. I too saved several years ago when we switched, and by the way, we went to progressive for our car coverage-had a claim a year ago in April, and it was basically glitch free. Oh, be sure you have stacked uninsured motorist coverage-don't drive without it.

Honestly believe a LOT of the companies count on you NOT ever checking competitive rates, etc. We shop around about every year.

Insurance companies, all of them, depend on the model that once you're insured, you're no longer paying attention. Agents are the same way. They're getting a cut of every payment you make. It's not in their best interest for you to rate shop on a regular basis. That's why they want you to come in annually to see how much they can "save" you and keep you firmly on the hook. Personally, I'm ALL OVER anything that's NOT in THEIR best interest.

Apparently Allstate was doing that to me. Had them for 30 years. Shopped around, got more coverage and saved a couple grand a year.
