Default Question about Springfield, Mass ...

Just wondering ...

I presume the old S&W factory depicted on the attached 100 year old postcard is long gone.

Anybody know what's on the site now?

Thanks.

The factory in the picture used to be at the current intersection of the Maple St./Dwight St. extension and Stockbridge St.

While it appears that "progress" and "urban renewal" have claimed much of the site, there still exists a beautiful industrial structure from that period. The Stockbridge Court apartments at 45 Willow St. are part of the former S&W complex.

If your exploring the area, don't forget the Springfield Armory Museum on the grounds of Springfield Tech.

PS: The video embedded in the site I linked, confirms that the apartments were the S&W plant.

+1 on the armory, be sure to try to get a private tour up stairs. It is an awesome collection of battlefield pickups from every era.

I can tell you that part of the contents of DB Wesson's office and including his roll top desk are now set up in Roy Jink's home. When the old factory was scheduled to be torn down or major parts of it, Roy worked with the city to allow time for DB's office to be removed. Lucky for S&W collectors, as otherwise it might have been lost for all time.

Here is the desk and the S&W emblem saved from DB's original office. Click on the image and then click on the enlarged image and it should grow again. (At least it does on my computer) Enjoy...

Thank you JSR III for the wonderful pix... & a very big thank you to Roy for saving it...heck I'd be willing to redo our family room if Roy ever decides to get rid of it..... there'd be no reason to disturb my wife with this news either... once it's in place... she'll get used to it, I think...
